Abstract

The difficulty of translating idiomatic expressions arises when there is no direct equivalent between the source and target languages. In order to discover how translators deal with those issues, this study aims to identify types of idiomatic expressions and examine the accuracy of Soul film subtitle with the inspection of strategies used by the translator. This study used a qualitative descriptive method by applying the classification of idioms based on McCarthy and O’dell’s theory, the strategy in translating idioms by Mona Baker, and the translation accuracy level by Nababan. The data was gathered by watching the film, reading the subtitles, and noting the idiomatic expressions present in the film. This study took 14 samples to be analyzed from the 98 data found in the source text. From all data, there are 8 types of idioms which are verb + object, prepositional phrases, compound, simile/simili, binomial, whole clause/sentence, cliché/fixed statements, and euphemisms. The translator used 5 strategies in translating the idioms which are using an idiom of similar meaning and form, using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form, translation by paraphrase, translation by omitting the play of the idiom, and translation by omitting the entire idiom. As for the accuracy, this study found 94 data of accurate translation, 2 translations of almost accurate, and 2 translations not accurate. However, it can be concluded that the translation has a high-level accuracy making the quality of the translated idioms in the subtitle is good, although it can be still improved. Abstract

The author has examined the ethnicity1 formation process of Japanese Indonesians in North Sumatra from various perspectives to determine their type of individuals. The diverse points of view are as follows: their common historical perspective as Japanese Indonesians, friendships between Japanese Indonesians from the time of the Issei2 to the present, the influence of Japanese culture in each family, their involvement with the Medan branch of the Yayasan Warga Persahabatan3, and the impact of working and living in Japan, among others. In the study of ethnicity among Japanese Indonesians, three factors are especially significant: blood ties, a sense of being the descendants of residual Japanese soldiers, and the Japanese influence from the Issei within the family. This paper is a compilation of the author’s research findings to date, with the addition of Nisei narratives to illustrate aspects of the Japanese Indonesians’ personality type.

Abstract

Tea is a type of drink that has been around since ancient times. In fact, in some regions, tea has become an integral part of culture and an inseparable part of people's social life, and also contains philosophical values. In each region, tea has its own characteristics. This is based on the variety and type of tea leaves themselves as well as the way they are served which are different in each region. The diversity of types of tea and forms of presentation certainly cannot be separated from differences in the environment where the tea leaves grow, as well as the origin of the tea in a particular region. These two factors refer to the practice of drinking tea and the different ways of serving tea in each region. Abstract

This research explores the efficacy of two prominent machine translation platforms, DeepL and ChatGPT, in translating academic idioms from English to Indonesian. Academic idioms, situated between discipline-specific jargon and universally understood expressions, pose a challenge for existing translation systems, particularly those rooted in Neural Machine Translation (NMT). The study employs a qualitative descriptive methodology, focusing on translation precision and naturalness, with bilingual experts evaluating translations through a questionnaire, focusing on translation precision and naturalness. The comprehensive analysis involved 50 participants who assessed translations on a scale of accuracy and fluency using Fiederer and O'Brian's (2009) rating scale.  The results indicate that both platforms exhibit strengths and weaknesses in terms of accuracy and fluency. While DeepL demonstrates trust in its translation proficiency, ChatGPT receives a more favorable response, especially regarding fluency. Participants preferred ChatGPT for fluency in handling academic expressions, indicating its adaptability. The study also revealed a general agreement among participants regarding the difficulties both platforms encounter in accurately translating academic idioms, emphasizing continuous requirements for improved machine translation. These insights enhance understanding of machine translation's strengths and limitations in academic setting, with implications for future technology development.
