Abstract

As one aspect of the Tri Dharma of Higher Education, community service activities are an obligation that must be carried out by every lecturer in higher education. English is a universal language because it is used by most countries in the world as the main language. Apart from that, English is an international language that is important to master or learn. The low use of digital media in independent curriculum learning, especially the use of Canva digital content, is influenced by internal and external factors. This activity aims to see whether the Pematang Siantar Family Education High School teachers can use the Canva application well in making Independent Curriculum teaching materials and whether the teachers are satisfied with the training provided by the Service Team. From the results of the training it can be concluded that the Canva application can help teachers in creating teaching materials based on the Independent Curriculum and almost all teachers (90.9%) who received training in using the Canva application were very satisfied with the material they received.

Abstract

The present study analyses the realisation of onomatopoeia and determines the extent of the onomatopoeic words in creating meaningful imagery, illustrating actions as well as evoking readers’ sensory associations toward the storyline of a webcomic entitled “Aquaman: Through Fire and Water”. Qualitatively, this study used Krippendorff’s (2018) Content Analysis (CA) as an approach. Methodologically, Miles & Huberman’s (1994) interactive qualitative data analysis was applied to analyse the data. Respectively, Bredin’s (1996) framework of Onomatopoeia was also adopted to look at how the onomatopoeic words are realised. The findings showed that Direct Onomatopoeia (50%) is the most occurring type from 26 onomatopoeic words found, followed by Associative Onomatopoeia (46,15%) and Exemplary Onomatopoeia (3,84%). The realisations of the onomatopoeic words reveal that the integration of the onomatopoeic realisations with the aesthetic depiction of the images throughout the webcomic can fairly create meaningful imagery and illustrate actions of the webcomic. Abstract

This research compares the derivatives of the word "ajar" in data in the Corpus Query Processor: LCC Indonesia 2023 and the latest edition of the Indonesian Dictionary (KBBI). The derivatives of the word "teach" that are identified are the differences and similarities in sentence patterns, sentiments and types of sentences. Corpus Query Processor: LCC Indonesia is a collection of digital texts that represent a particular language. This study is included in corpus linguistics studies, namely empirical studies of language using features such as concordance, collocations, N-grams, and word lists. The method used is a descriptive qualitative approach with in-depth analysis of lingual corpus data. The research results found 13 derivatives of the word "teach" in the verb class in the corpus, with 5 of them found in KBBI Edition VI. This difference in derivatives of the word "teach" indicates the possibility that some commonly used derivatives of the word have not been included in the KBBI. Another finding is that the sentence pattern of each derivative of the word "teach" has been clearly identified, indicating the subject, predicate, object, as well as any additional information that may be present. Actor and patient sentiments vary depending on the context of the sentence. However, generally, there is a positive sentiment towards the derivative of the word "teach", which indicates the act of learning or teaching that is considered good or useful.

Abstract

The article explores the public's response to Indonesia’s Customs official Twitter account. The research uses a qualitative approach, focusing on content analysis methods. This research also utilizing the speech act theory, with a focus on illocutionary acts. The research data was collected by screenshots of 25 responses on Twitter. The analysis revealed that the responses were predominantly directive acts (8 responses), followed by expressive acts (6), declarative acts (5), representative acts (4), and commissive acts (2). The predominance of directive acts indicates that many responses aimed to influence others to boycott the customs agency, reflecting a strong public sentiment against the institution. This study also highlights the critical nature of social media interactions with government agencies and underlines the need for improved public engagement strategies. We hoping the results of this research can provide deeper understanding into the dynamics of communication between government institutions and the public via social media and its implications for public acceptance and perception.

Abstract

Tunisia is a country with a long history and rich culture, causing its contemporary society to be multilingual. Every Tunisian person will be introduced to five different languages before the age of 18, making Tunisians more vulnerable to the phenomenon known as code-switching: the switching between two or more languages in one’s same speech. It is known that according to Bourdieu, the language you speak represents who you are, and one’s use of code switching, especially between Arabic and French, could be their way of assessing their own social status. This paper tested out this theory by analyzing the speech patterns of different characters in Tunisian TV shows, through both a sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic point of view. The goal of this practical analysis was to determine whether certain characters’ use of Arabic/French code switching was purely coincidental or aiming at a demarcation of said character’s social status. The analysis found that characters in Tunisian television will indeed use code-switching to affirm their own social status or try to make themselves resemble high social class individuals, meaning their use of French is calculated and holds a very particular goal. In retrospect, this shows that TV show writers will use Arabic/French code switching as a tool to expose social disparities and lay a foundation for social criticism.

Abstract

This paper investigates the use of the personal pronoun "you" in tourism discourse through a corpus-based study of the Lonely Planet website. As a central element in engaging readers, the pronoun "you" serves to directly address and involve the audience, making the discourse more interactive and persuasive. By analyzing a comprehensive corpus of travel-related texts, this study examines how "you" is strategically utilized to create a personalized experience, guide the reader's journey, and establish a conversational tone in tourism content. The research uncovers patterns in the usage of "you" across various contexts and topics within the website, providing insights into its role in shaping audience perception and enhancing the effectiveness of tourism marketing. This study contributes to a better understanding of linguistic strategies in digital tourism discourse, offering valuable implications for both researchers and professionals in the tourism industry.

Abstract

Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mendeskripsikan variasi pelafalan vokal bahasa Indonesia oleh oleh orang Jepang yang meliputi vocal dan konsonan dalam bahasa Indonesia yang diutarakan oleh youtuber Tomo Yamashita, Yusuke Wasedaboys dan Gengki Banget. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian deskriptif kualitatif dengan metode pengumpulan data menggunakan metode simak dan catat dengan teknik sadap. Analisis terdiri dari (1) mengumpulkan data dengan melihat dan mendengarkan secara seksama. (2) mengidentifikasi bunyi pelafalan dan ketidaksesuaian fonem dan (3) menganalisis penyebab perubahan pelafalan. Hal analisis tersebut mendapatkan hasil pelafalan fonem yang (1) memiliki penambahan huruf berupa /u/ pada konsonan /r/ dan /k/. (2) perubahan pelafalan /l/ ke /r/, (3) penghilangan huruf dan (4) perubahan pelafalan /n/ menjadi / ŋ / serta (5) memiliki kekacauan bunyi pada huruf /u/ menjadi / ɯ / dan fonem /e/ memiliki tambahan /u/ saat diucapkan.

Abstract

Social media platforms like TikTok have become popular for sharing language learning content. However, the phenomenon of code-mixing in such content, particularly in the context of Korean language learning, remains underexplored. This study aims to describe the forms of code-mixing present in Korean language learning content on the TikTok account @Eunji.nim, analyze the factors influencing its use and types of code-mixing. The forms of code-mixing are analyzed sociolinguistically using the theory of code-mixing forms by Khusaini (2019), the factors influencing code-mixing are examined using Suandi's theory (Ramadhan et al., 2017), and the types of code-mixing are identified using Wardhaugh's framework (Hamidah, 2015). This research examines five Korean language learning videos from the TikTok account @Eunji.nim. The primary research instrument is a data card, which is used to identify and classify the forms and factors of code-mixing. The data are analyzed descriptively and qualitatively to uncover patterns and underlying factors. The results indicate that utterances in the analyzed videos exhibit various forms of code-mixing. More than half of the instances are in single words, followed by clauses, with phrases being the least common form. Key elements influencing code-mixing include variety and level of speech, function and purpose, speech partner, and topic factors. The types of code-mixing only found situational code-mixing. This study highlights the sociolinguistic complexity of code-mixing in Korean language learning content on TikTok, offering insights into its forms, influencing factors and the types of code-mixing.

Abstract

The purposes of this research are to find the hate speech found in Islamic preacher Gus Miftah’s Instagram account during the iced tea seller controversy. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data was collected manually from Instagram comments related to a viral incident involving Gus Miftah, ensuring the selection of comments that exhibited clear hostility or aggression. Using the theory for classifying hate speech developed by (Mondal et al., 2017) and the impoliteness strategies developed by (Culpeper’s, 2015), this study distinguishes six categories of hate speech: religion (41.9%), behavior (27.5%), physical (25.06%), class (4.35%), disability (1.08%), and gender (0.2%). Furthermore, bald-on-record impoliteness was the most often used strategy (45.14%), indicating users’ direct animosity. The study offers a detailed understanding of the rhetorical and ideological foundations of hate speech and contributes new insights to hate speech studies by placing the analysis within the cultural and religious context of Indonesia.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the frequency of words in the translated short story The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse by Beatrix Potter translated by Arya Bisma into The Tale of Johnny Town-Mouse. A qualitative approach is used to identify patterns of word usage as a reflection of the themes, characters, and narrative elements of the story. Then the data analysis technique was carried out using the web-based software Voyant Tools, which systematically counts the number of occurrences of each word in the text. The results showed that words with the highest frequency such as Timmy, Willie, and Johnny reflected the story's focus on the interactions between the main characters. The word keranjang indicates the importance of physical elements associated with rural life, while town and mouse emphasize the setting and theme of city life. In addition, descriptive words such as suara and kembali reinforce the atmosphere and plot of the story. This study shows that corpus analysis can reveal linguistic patterns that reflect important themes and elements in literary works. This approach not only helps to understand language structure and style, but also provides insight into the social and cultural context that influenced the story. Thus, this study emphasizes the relevance of the corpus linguistics approach in literary analysis
