Abstract

The purpose of this study is the exploration and analysis of literary works that are reflective of the theory of Marxist structuralism. In The Great Gatsby, Fitz Gerald portrayed the social classes with the characteristics in the story. This research used qualitative research to collect the data. The researcher read several books and articles that described and explained the identification process with Marx's theory. As mentioned above, the object collected from The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is caused by a close and interrelated relationship between Fitzgerald and his works. This research resulted and was discussed in structuration, which is focused on revealed characteristics and added comprehension theory to provide it. One of the characteristics that depicts Bourjois is Tom. It is caused by the arrogant attitude that Tom shows from the beginning of the story to the end, which is related to Fitzegerald's perspective of Borjouis. However, there is Gatsby, who comes from Proletarian and implicitly shows how Fitzegerald was before being the Bourjois. It is also explained with theories that come from his personal essay, My Personal City. The purposes of the author can be seen in the details of social phenomena that were added to his literary work, namely The Great Gatsby.

Abstract

Comparative literature involves comparing, analysing and understanding literary works to explore similarities, differences and influences in literature. Comparative literature can be found in song lyrics as a way to create a better understanding and convey the songwriter's feelings or thoughts to the listener. This research explores the similarities and differences in the use of hyperbole and metaphor in the top five songs from Arctic Monkeys and Coldplay. By conducting a comparative analysis of the lyrical content, this research aims to reveal how these two well-known bands use these literary devices to convey emotions and themes in their music. By using Reaske's figurative language theory and objective criticism approach. This research found that Arctic Monkeys songs often explore themes of romance, emotion, and burning desire, using hyperbole to dramatically amplify feelings, making their expressions more intense and vivid, for Coldplay lyrics often raise themes of longing, regret, and admiration. As for metaphors, both bands use metaphors extensively to convey deeper meanings and evoke emotions. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how literary techniques are used in songwriting across different genres and styles of music. Keywords: Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, Comparative Literature, Figurative Language

Abstract

This research explores the themes of hope and sacrifice using William Wordsworth's romanticism theory to analyze the themes of hope and sacrifice in O. Henry's short story The Last Leaf. An ill young woman named Johnsy believes she will die when the last leaf on the ivy vine outside her window falls in this short story. The main characters of the story are her close friend Sue and their elderly neighbor Behrman, an artist who eventually sacrifices his life to keep Johnsy from losing hope by painting a realistic leaf. This research looks at Romanticism, which emphasizes emotion and nature, shaped the story's structure and development of characters in The Last Leaf. This research examines how the characters' emotional experiences connect with Romantic ideals through a textual analysis of the short story. Based on the findings, it can be considered that Wordsworth's Romanticism is reflected in The Last Leaf, which portrays the remarkable act of creating art, the strength of hope, and human sacrifice. Behrman's last act of kindness, painting the leaf, is seen as a romantic gesture that exceeds reality and captures the hope that is present in the hopelessness of winter. The research concludes that O. Henry's short story represents Romantic ideals and emphasizes the capacity for selflessness in the human spirit.
