Abstract

Religious issues that are no longer relevant to modern living are represented in The Wonder (2022) film by Sebastián Lelio. This research aims to unravel the Religious Dogma in the film by focusing on examining the religious situation of Irish society in the nineteenth century. Tracing the religious life of the Irish community in the nineteenth century, where the majority adhered to Roman Catholicism, this research uses the sociology of literature method. In more detail, this research applies Max Weber's theory of the sociology of religion approach. The Wonder film entirely is the research data, but specifically, the writer takes the socio-religious context, screenshots from several scenes, and film dialogues as the secondary data. So it can be said that data collection in this research used documentation and literature study techniques. Analysis of the sociology of religion in The Wonder (2022) film by Sebastián Lelio is still rare to find, so this research is essential so that it can add to criticism resources of the sociology of literature. Aside from that, the results of this research are that the modernization and logicalization of religion can occur along with times of development and the relevance of public interest.

Abstract

This research explores the themes of hope and sacrifice using William Wordsworth's romanticism theory to analyse the themes of hope and sacrifice in O. Henry's short story "The Last Leaf." An ill young woman named Johnsy believes she will die when the last leaf on the ivy vine outside her window falls in this short story. The main characters of the story are her close friend Sue and their elderly neighbour Behrman, an artist who eventually sacrifices his life to keep Johnsy from losing hope by painting a realistic leaf. This research looks at Romanticism, which emphasizes emotion and nature, shaped the story's structure and development of characters in "The Last Leaf." This research examines how the characters' emotional experiences connect with Romantic ideals through a textual analysis of the short story. Based on the findings, it can be considered that Wordsworth's Romanticism is reflected in "The Last Leaf," which portrays the remarkable act of creating art, the strength of hope, and human sacrifice. Behrman's last act of kindness, painting the leaf, is seen as a romantic gesture that exceeds reality and captures the hope that is present in the hopelessness of winter. The research concludes that O. Henry's short story represents Romantic ideals and emphasizes the capacity for selflessness in the human spirit.

Abstract

This research aims to contribute to the analysis of feminism related to patriarchal culture and its resistance in the Why Women Kill television series that was released in 2019 and directed by Marc Cherry. The television series Why Women Kill (2019) illustrates that patriarchal culture grows and develops in people's lives as shown by the dominance of men over women in various aspects of society which causes women to experience underdevelopment and limited access to many fields in life. The analysis in this study includes the depiction of patriarchal culture in Why Women Kill (2019) and the resistance to patriarchal culture by female characters in Why Women Kill (2019). In conducting the analysis, the researcher used literary criticism method by using the theory of feminism from the thoughts of Mary Wollstonecraft and Helene Cixous to analyze feminism related to patriarchal culture and its resistance. This research found data analysis of 70 scenes in the film in the form of screenshots and dialogues. This research depicted patriarchy as a culture that is limiting women which makes women backward and disadvantaged, that patriarchy is depicting women as good mothers and wives, depending on men superiority, and as objects to satisfy men desires. In its resistance, women reject the traditional norms by being educated and having dreams and jobs. Women also resist to patriarchy by being independent from role of men, independent in defending themselves, and independent in making life decisions. Women also depicted to rebel against control of men. This research makes an answer to the title of this television series that “why women kill” because they wanted to “kill” norms and cultures that limit and harm women themselves and only fellow women understand how to be in that position.
