Abstract

Film is a field of study that is very relevant to the analysis of human values, one of which is the value of masculinity. This study was conducted to determine the masculinity presented through language signs, verbal and non-verbal signs in the film Fantastic Beasts and where to Find Them (2016). The analysis technique used in this study is descriptive qualitative which refers to the female character character approach in the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) through the analysis of masculinity John Archer and Barbara Lloyd.Based on this level and the results of this study, researchers see that the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (2016) provides an overview of the forms of masculinity, according to the concept of stereotype masculinity that is closely related and cannot be separated from the patriarchy culture and try to change the main stereotype In this film that women do not have to be at home and do not have the right to argue, but brave and firm in doing something or in making decisions. Women's masculinity is described not only about the style of dress or physically but through logical thinking and has a high leadership spirit.

Abstract

This study examines the characteristics of William Wallace as the main character in leading Scotland to fight for its independence in the novel Braveheart by Randall Wallace, using Sudarmanto's theory of heroism. This study aims to identify the character depiction of the main character and analyze the character of William Wallace as the main character in the fight for Scottish independence in the novel Braveherat by Randall Wallace. The data used is to look at the dialogue and heroic actions of William Wallace as shown in the novel Braveheart by Randall Wallace. Research results: (1) To understand the meaning of the novel (2) Knowing William Wallace's characteristic struggle in fighting for Scotland's independence. (3) To understand the meaning of heroism. This study shows the character of the main character William Wallace in his struggle to liberate the Scottish people from British colonialism.

Abstract

Freedom is always a longing for everyone. Freedom is a dream that must be achieved in broadly life; it is not only a kind of utopia, but should be united in reality. By the freedom one can do anything, for the freedom is over all. Once the freedom being shackled, the struggle for liberation will become a necessary one. Such a struggle is not always and only appeared in the physical appearances, but also appears in the ideas against the establishment of hegemony. Those thesis statements above are discursive formations that is used to analyze the struggling ideas of Lily Briscoe; one of the characters that in Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse. Lily Briscoe is important to appear because she broaches ideas, statements, and questions that refer to her struggle for liberating herself from the patriarchal hegemony, including patriarchal ideal of womanhood. In accordance with such a struggle, the combination theoretical framework of Marxist-Feminism with a little “deconstructive” reading will be an interesting discussion here.

Abstract

The main subject of this study is the implementation of traditional masculinity and femininity theories within the Heteronormativity framework in 3 sequential volumes of Ms. Marvel by author G. Willow Wilson. The author relies on a post-structuralist feminist framework to describe gender stereotypes, using content analysis methods, which are mixed-methods quantitatively and qualitatively. This thesis attempts to answer a fundamental question; How Gender Stereotypes were presented in Ms. Marvel Comics?. In this findings, the data that have been collected shows significant differences in the distribution of social role attributes, traits, behaviors in characters divided into categories of masculine and feminine attributes. These quantitative data are then processed. Masculine attributes still dominated by male characters, and vice versa. , Nevertheless, there were at least a total of 67% (n=4) of female characters who were more associated with masculine attributes.

Abstract

The novel ‘Your Name’ by Makoto Shinkai is a popular Japanese romance story that revolves around the body swap phenomenon between two high school students, Taki and Mitsuha, who live in different places and have different backgrounds. The novel explores the psychological aspects of their relationship, such as their identity, personality, emotions, and communication, as well as the external factors that affect their romance, such as their culture, environment, and destiny. This research paper aims to analyze the romantic conflicts that arise from the psychological and external factors in the novel, and to examine their relevance in the lives of contemporary college students who may face similar challenges in their romantic relationships. The research method used is a qualitative approach, using Freud’s theory of personality The data sources are the novel itself and some related literature. The data analysis is done by identifying, categorizing, and interpreting the data based on the research questions and the theoretical framework. The results of the analysis show that the romantic conflicts in the novel are caused by the following factors: the id-ego-superego dynamics, the identity crisis, and the communication barriers. The research also finds that these factors are relevant in the lives of contemporary college students, who may experience similar conflicts in their romantic relationships due to the influence of globalization, technology, social media, and individualism. The research concludes that the novel ‘Your Name’ provides a realistic and relatable portrayal of the romantic conflicts that may occur in modern society, and that the novel can be used as a source of inspiration and guidance for college students who want to overcome their romantic problems and achieve a harmonious and fulfilling relationship.

Abstract

This research attempts to examine the adventure aspect that focuses on the storyline in the popular movie "Mad Max: Fury Road" directed by George Miller, released in 2015. The film shows a hero successfully completing a dangerous mission with fairly short but effective dialog to convey the intended message while advancing the story. Therefore, the researcher poses an analysis question which is how the adventure storyline is built in the movie of Mad Max: Fury Road (2015). To achieve the outcome of the question, this research identifies the adventure aspects that build the story by using the main formula theory by Sarick (2009). The method used in this research is qualitative method. The researcher uses dialog and character scenes as data to get results. From the results of the study, the researcher found 3 data which are the boundaries between the beginning of the movie, the middle of the movie, and the end of the storyline of the movie. The conclusion of the movie Mad Max: Fury Road can be understood that the adventure plot is very simple but gives a tense impression and although various obstacles are encountered during the travel process, the adventure narrative includes the ability to successfully survive and overcome dangerous circumstances involving physical, human, and animal risks, as well as the need to escape and pass through dangerous predicaments.

Abstract

Comparative literature involves comparing, analysing and understanding literary works to explore similarities, differences and influences in literature. Comparative literature can be found in song lyrics as a way to create a better understanding and convey the songwriter's feelings or thoughts to the listener. This research explores the similarities and differences in the use of hyperbole and metaphor in the top five songs from Arctic Monkeys and Coldplay. By conducting a comparative analysis of the lyrical content, this research aims to reveal how these two well-known bands use these literary devices to convey emotions and themes in their music. By using Reaske's figurative language theory and objective criticism approach. This research found that Arctic Monkeys songs often explore themes of romance, emotion, and burning desire, using hyperbole to dramatically amplify feelings, making their expressions more intense and vivid, for Coldplay lyrics often raise themes of longing, regret, and admiration. As for metaphors, both bands use metaphors extensively to convey deeper meanings and evoke emotions. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how literary techniques are used in songwriting across different genres and styles of music.Keywords: Arctic Monkeys, Coldplay, Comparative Literature, Figurative Language

Abstract

Masculinity is the characteristics that are traditionally thought to be typical of or suitable for men. This research attempts to discuss a character's masculinity in The Barbie 2023 Film. To specify the research, the researcher divided this analysis into two research questions, they are: 1) What are the elements of masculinity depicted in The 2023 Barbie Film? 2) How is the depiction of stereotypical masculinity in The 2023 Barbie Film? Masculinity in Barbie 2023 is very interesting to discuss because it can be identified from various elements contained in the film, in this case the identification of masculinity can be seen from how the characters in this film behave, the instrinsic elements implied in the film, the setting, and also other things that illustrate how the elements of masculinity are contained in the film. The results of this study found two findings, namely the first is what elements of masculinity are found in this film in the form of how the character Ken has an athletic posture that strongly shows elements of masculinity and in several scenes in the film shows masculinity, then the findings of other stereotypes of masculinity that the author managed to identify from the dialog, character acting, setting, or atmosphere that is contained in this film.

Abstract

This research aims to contribute to the analysis of feminism related to patriarchal culture and its resistance in the Why Women Kill television series that was released in 2019 and directed by Marc Cherry. The television series Why Women Kill (2019) illustrates that patriarchal culture grows and develops in people's lives as shown by the dominance of men over women in various aspects of society which causes women to experience underdevelopment and limited access to many fields in life. The analysis in this study includes the depiction of patriarchal culture in Why Women Kill (2019) and the resistance to patriarchal culture by female characters in Why Women Kill (2019). In conducting the analysis, the researcher used literary criticism method by using the theory of feminism from the thoughts of Mary Wollstonecraft and Helene Cixous to analyze feminism related to patriarchal culture and its resistance. This research found data analysis of 70 scenes in the film in the form of screenshots and dialogues. This research depicted patriarchy as a culture that is limiting women which makes women backward and disadvantaged, that patriarchy is depicting women as good mothers and wives, depending on men superiority, and as objects to satisfy men desires. In its resistance, women reject the traditional norms by being educated and having dreams and jobs. Women also resist to patriarchy by being independent from role of men, independent in defending themselves, and independent in making life decisions. Women also depicted to rebel against control of men. This research makes an answer to the title of this television series that “why women kill” because they wanted to “kill” norms and cultures that limit and harm women themselves and only fellow women understand how to be in that position. Abstract

This study undertakes a qualitative exploration of the principal characters' personality traits within the 2007 film Ratatouille. Specifically, it aims to delineate the primary character's personality profile and to identify the salient factors influencing the personality development of these central figures. Employing a qualitative descriptive methodology, primary data was derived from the film itself, focusing on the personalities of the main characters. Data analysis adhered to the framework proposed by Miles and Huberman. Findings indicate that the character of Linguini exhibits a constellation of personality traits including insecurity, shyness, timidity, and introversion. In contrast, Skinner is characterized by anger and ambition. Several factors contributed to the personality development of both Linguini and Skinner. Linguini's personality trajectory, marked by a transition from insecurity to confidence, is attributable to environmental and learning factors. Skinner, initially driven by anger and ambition, undergoes a transformation toward greed and vengefulness as a result of environmental pressures and unconscious motivations, ultimately culminating in a desire to usurp control of the restaurant
