Abstract

Red seaweed (Gelidium Sp.) is one type of seaweed found in Indonesia and contains antioxidant compounds. Red seaweed (Gelidium Sp.) has catechin compounds which are strong antioxidants, stronger than vitamin E, C, and beta-carotene. The purpose of this study was to determine if red seaweed extract (Gelidium sp) could be used in a face serum with antioxidant activity, and subsequently, to identify the best formula among the developed preparations.Face serum is a preparation that is applied to the face to avoid treating facial skin. This research was an experimental study by extracting red seaweed (Gelidium Sp.) which is carried out using the maceration method, then made with different concentrations of red seaweed extract (Gelidium Sp.) namely 5%, 7.5%, 10%. Testing of the preparation includes organoleptic tests, homogeneity tests, pH tests, viscosity tests, spreadability tests, and DPPH tests. The results obtained indicate that formula III fullfil the requirements. Antioxidant activity can be effectively demonstrated in face serum preparations formulated with red seaweed extract (Gelidium sp.), and the optimal formulation, Formula III, is achieved with a 10% extract concentration

Abstract

Oral diseases, like oral candidiasis caused by Candida albicans, remain a common and troubling health issue in Indonesia. Massoia essential oil (Massoia aromatica Becc.), which contains C-10 massoialactone, has proven antifungal properties. However, its limited solubility affects how well it is absorbed into the body. This study aimed to evaluate the antifungal effectiveness of Self-Micro-emulsifying Mouth Dissolving Film (SMMDF) formulations that incorporate massoia essential oil, using either HPMC or PVP polymers, against C. albicans in a laboratory setting. The test fungus was cultured on PDA and prepared into a suspension standardized to 0.5 McFarland, followed by antifungal testing using the well diffusion method on PDA medium. Nystatin served as the positive control, while formulations without massoia essential oil served as the negative control. The results showed that the average inhibition zones for SMMDF with HPMC and PVP polymers were 10.85 mm and 11.51 mm, respectively—both considered strong and larger than the positive control (6.68 mm). An independent sample t-test showed no significant difference between the two polymers (p = 0.735), suggesting that the antifungal activity mainly stemmed from the massoia essential oil itself. These results suggest that massoia essential oil-based SMMDF holds significant potential as an effective antifungal solution against C. albicans, with no major difference in effectiveness between HPMC and PVP as the polymers used to form the film.

Abstract

 Diabetes mellitus DM is a serious global health issue caused by the body's inability to use insulin optimally, resulting in uncontrolled blood sugar levels. Moringa leaves Moringa oleifera L. and snakehead fish Channa striata are known to have antidiabetic potential; moringa leaves contain quercetin, while snakehead fish are rich in arginine and leucine, which help regulate blood sugar levels. This study aims to test the antidiabetic activity of the combination of Moringa oleifera L. leaf ethanol extract and Channa striata ethanol extract CMOCS in male white mice. A total of 25 Wistar rats were divided into five groups: negative control distilled water, positive control glibenclamide 0.45 mg/kg body weight, and three combination groups of CMOCS 100, 200, 300 mg/kg body weight. Diabetes was induced by alloxan. Blood glucose levels were measured on days 0, 7, and 14. The results showed that alloxan successfully induced hyperglycemia. After 14 days, all combination groups reduced blood glucose levels. CMOC III  was the most effective, reducing glucose levels by 31.91%, approaching glibenclamide 37.78%. The Mann-Whitney test showed significant differences CMOCS I produced a p-value of 0.021, CMOCS II a p-value of 0.036, and CMOCS III a p-value of 0.047 p < 0.05 between the negative control and the treatment groups, confirming the antidiabetic activity of this extract combination.

Abstract

Oxidative stress is a major contributor to metabolic disorders, making the Keap1–Nrf2 pathway a key therapeutic target for antioxidant interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic potential of Arctigenin, a lignan from Jatropha curcas leaves, as a natural Keap1 antagonist using an in silico bioinformatics approach. Molecular docking with YASARA Structure was used to determine bond affinity and interaction dynamics, followed by 50-ns molecular dynamics simulations to assess the stability of the complex. ADMET and drug-likeness predictions were performed to evaluate pharmacokinetic properties and safety. Arctigenin demonstrated strong binding affinity (-8.73 kcal/mol) and formed six hydrogen bonds with key Kelch residues (Arg415, Ser508, Val604, Leu365, Ala510, Val463), along with stable hydrophobic and π interactions involving Arg415, Ala556, Leu557, and Tyr572. Molecular dynamics confirmed complex stability, indicated by low RMSD values for Cα and backbone (1.6–1.8 Å), minimal residue fluctuations, stable radius of gyration (17.7–18.1 Å), and consistent SASA. ADMET predictions showed excellent intestinal absorption (94.416%), low blood-brain barrier permeability, and favorable safety profile (AMES-negative, non-hepatotoxic). Overall, Arctigenin exhibits strong potential as a natural Keap1 inhibitor for the development of antioxidant, antihypertensive, or antidiabetic drugs.
