Abstract

This study aims to analyze the use of empathetic language in natural disaster reporting in Aceh online media. The background of this research is based on the importance of language as a means of building social empathy and psychological support for disaster victims through reporting. Empathetic language is understood as a form of communication that reflects concern for the feelings and experiences of others, especially in crisis situations. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques involving reading and noting 25 news articles from 13 online media outlets in Aceh, namely Serambi Indonesia, AJNN.net, KBA. ONE, Harian Rakyat Aceh, Aceh Info, Haba Nusantara.net, Waspada Aceh.com, Noa.co.id, Koalisi.co, Aceh.tribunnews.com, Portalsatu.com, Anteroaceh.com, and Acehkini.id published between 2023 and 2024. Data analysis was conducted based on Davis' empathetic theory, which encompasses four aspects: perspective taking, empathic concern, personal distress, and fantasy. The research findings revealed 64 instances of empathetic language, comprising 48 instances of empathic concern, 9 instances of perspective taking, and 7 instances of personal distress. The fantasy aspect was not identified as the news texts were factual and objective in nature. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on linguistically analyzing the use of empathetic language in the context of disaster journalism in the Aceh region, as well as the application of Davis' theory, which has not been widely used in journalistic language studies. This study contributes to the development of empathetic communication in the mass media and encourages more humanistic journalistic practices.

Abstract

Libraries are essential academic support facilities in higher education, significantly contributing to teaching and learning activities. The key factor influencing user visitation is the quality of services and facilities. This study aims to evaluate the quality of facilities and librarian performance at the Rumah Ilmu Library, Semarang State University (UNNES), in relation to student visitation interest using the SERVQUAL framework, which includes Tangibles, Reliability, Responsiveness, Assurance, and Empathy. A descriptive qualitative method was applied with a phenomenological approach and purposive sampling. Data were collected through direct observation and in-depth interviews. Results show that while physical facilities are generally adequate, issues remain, such as limited seating and suboptimal supporting amenities. In terms of service, users experienced inconsistent information, delayed responses, and a lack of empathy from staff, reducing trust in library services. Therefore, comprehensive improvements in both facilities and service quality are necessary to meet user expectations and increase student interest.

Abstract

This research discusses the low skills in writing poetry texts in Indonesian language learning. Students still struggle with writing poetry texts because the skill of writing poetry is difficult for them due to a lack of ability to express their thoughts. The teaching methods used by Indonesian language educators have become one of the factors contributing to the low skills in writing poetry texts because they are still considered boring, as educators use quite old teaching methods that do not keep up with the times. Abstract

This study analyzes the narrative structure of social conflict in the animated film Summer Ghost using Tzvetan Todorov’s narratological theory, which consists of three stages: equilibrium, disruption, and new equilibrium. The film tells the story of three high school students dealing with academic pressure, bullying, and terminal illness conflicts that are narratively framed to reflect broader adolescent social issues. Using a qualitative descriptive method, the analysis reveals that these conflicts are presented through character transformation and plot progression, aligning with Todorov’s structure. The film not only portrays internal struggles but also raises awareness of societal concerns such as mental health and the search for meaning. These findings indicate that animated films like Summer Ghost can effectively convey inspirational messages and serve as alternative teaching materials for narrative texts in junior high school.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the factors influencing the maintenance of the Karo language among teenagers in Tanjung Merahe Village based on Downes’ theory, which categorizes language use into four domains: family, friendship, activities, and motivation. This research employed a qualitative descriptive method with in-depth interviews conducted with selected informants. The findings reveal that in the family domain, six factors contribute to maintaining the Karo language at home: intentional teaching of the Karo language to children, intergenerational interaction, the use of Karo during family events, a home environment predominantly speaking Karo, and the instillation of Karo cultural values from an early age. In the friendship domain, six factors support the use of the Karo language: interaction with peers who speak Karo, the habit of conversing in public spaces, use of Karo within youth communities, peer influence in traditional settings, use of Karo in certain social media contexts, and role modeling by community leaders in language use. In the activity domain, two key factors were identified: the predominant use of Karo in traditional ceremonies and the involvement of teenagers in various cultural activities such as traditional ceremonies, arts, and Karo traditional music. In the motivation domain, six factors indicate the drive to maintain the Karo language: pride in using the Karo language, the desire to highlight Karo identity in front of outsiders, awareness of the importance of language preservation, commitment to using Karo in various situations, the intention to pass the language to future generations, and support from the village government through cultural preservation programs.
