Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Process Oriented Guided  Inquiry Learning (POGIL) model on Science Process Skills (SPS), cognitive abilities and the correlation between SPS and students' cognitive abilities on the reaction rate concept. The sample in this study were 35 students of class XI SMA Negeri Seribu Bukit 2016-2017 academic year. The data was collected through observation and test. 20 multiple choice questions (alpha:0.81) were used to collect data of student’s SPS. While students' cognitive abilities were obtained by pre-test and post-test using 20 multiple choice questions (alpha:0.84). The distributed normally and homogeneously. The hypothesis was tested by using Paired Sample t-Test at a significance level of 0.05. Based on the data analysis and hypothesis testing carried out, there was a significant difference in the effect of the POGIL model on Science Process Skills (SPS), cognitive abilities and significant interactions between SPS and students' cognitive abilities on the material reaction rate, indicated by the value of each probability or sig. 0,000, so it can be concluded that the results of testing the hypothesis reject Ho or accept Ha at the 5 percent alpha level.

Abstract

The research entitled "Development of Google Slide-Based Interactive Learning Media on Chemistry Subjects in Class X High School Materials on Atomic Structure", has been carried out using Research and Development (RD) research types and the ADDIE model. The purpose of this study is to develop a google slide learning media that is proven to be suitable for use. The google slide-based learning media on atomic structure material was tested for feasibility by expert validators (media and materials) and students of MAS Darussyari'ah, Banda Aceh city. The instrument in this study was a media feasibility questionnaire sheet and student response sheets. The results of data analysis showed that the google slide media was very feasible to use with the percentage of media feasibility validation results of 93%. Students responses to the media showed a positive response with a percentage of 86.37% which was categorized as very good. Based on the data obtained, it can be concluded that the Google Slide media is very suitable to be used as a learning medium and received positive responses from students.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to analyze student learning outcomes, describe student activities and describe student responses after the application of the learning together model on the material of molecular form at SMA Negeri 1 Krueng Barona Jaya. This is a descriptive study with a qualitative approach. The population in this study were students of class X SMA Negeri 1 Krueng Barona Jaya. Data were collected by observing student activities, learning outcomes tests and filling out student response questionnaires. The results of the percentage of student activity from the first meeting to the third meeting in a row, namely 71%, 84% and 85% showed that the activity of students increased significantly. The percentages of learning outcomes at the first to third meetings were 67.50%, 77.50% and 87.50% which showed an increase and classical mastery achievement. Students showed a positive response to the application of the learning together model on the material in the form of molecules with a percentage of 94.07%. The learning together model can improve students' activities and learning outcomes. Students are enthusiastic in participating in learning using the learning together model and most of them give a positive response.

Abstract

The Course of Basic skills of teaching is provided to train chemistry education students in conducting an efficient and effective learning. These skills include set induction closure lesson skills and explaining skills. In the next globalization of education era, chemistry education students as the future chemistry teachers are expected to have a good skill in teaching in English. In fact, the limitations of their abilities and self-confidence to speak in English cause they did not apply the basic skills of teaching in English properly, especially when they have to explain chemistry concepts with analogies and told the interesting stories related to chemistry. To solve this problem, the design of learning to optimize student opportunities in practicing their speaking skills is the right solution. This learning design is called Board Game-Based Learning (BGBL). BGBL implementation is effective in improving students’ confidences in demonstrating their set induction closure lesson skills and explaining skills in teaching chemistry in English.

Abstract

The Covid-19 pandemic has introduced numerous limitations to face-to-face learning, prompting a transition to online platforms. Consequently, this study aims to investigate the impact of using the PhET virtual lab on chemistry education students' understanding of the acid-base concept. Employing a quasi-experimental approach with a one-shot case study design, the research selected two classes (an experimental class and a control class) from the 2021 chemistry education cohort using purposive sampling. Data collection involved the use of tests, as multiple-choice questions, and non-test instruments, including questionnaires. The results of the study indicate that the calculated t-value t count of 14.905 surpassed the critical t-value ttable of 2.262 at a significance level of 5 percent (0.05), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis (Ho) and the acceptance of the alternative hypothesis (Ha). This finding signifies a significant effect of utilizing the PhET virtual lab on chemistry education students' understanding of the acid-base concept. Moreover, students responded positively to the use of the PhET virtual lab, with 41 percent rating it as good and 40 percent rating it as very good. Keywords: PhET Simulation; Virtual Lab; Distance Learning; e-learning; Acid and Base

Abstract

The traditional coffee with the greatest taste is called arabica. One of the ingredients made from coffee beans and used for air freshener is coffee oil. The Soxhlet extraction method, a separation technique that is often used to separate one or more compounds from a solid or liquid by adding a solvent, is one of the processes for making coffee oil. This research has been done before, but a comparison of different types of solvents and inclusion of differences in extraction time has not been done. The purpose of this research is to understand how the difference in extraction time and the comparison of solvent types affect the yield, density, and acid number produced. Extraction of hexane and ethanol by distillation for 120 minutes is a research technique. Extraction times were 90, 120, 150 and 180 minutes. In this study, the largest extraction with ethanol solvent was produced within 120 minutes of 25.75%, while the highest percent yield of coffee oil with hexane solvent was obtained within 120 minutes of 17.3%. The maximum specific gravity for 180 minutes with ethanol solvent is 0.94 gr/ml, while for 180 minutes with hexane solvent is 0.91 g/mL. Coffee oil with hexane solvent produced an acid value between 3.2 and 7 mg KOH/g, while coffee oil with ethanol solvent produced an acid value between 4.6 and 11.2 mg KOH/g.

Abstract

Hydroquinone is one of the dangerous ingredients in facial whitening cream cosmetics which can cause skin irritation, skin redness and a burning feeling. The purpose of this study was to determine the hydroquinone content in facial whitening cream cosmetics sold in the marketplace. The method used in this study was a qualitative test using a colour reagent test and the Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) method with toluene:glacial acetic acid as the mobile phase (5:5) and Silica Gel254 Plate as the stationary phase. Quantitative analysis used the UV Vis spectrophotometry method at a wavelength of 541 nm. The results of the qualitative test in the TLC test showed that 4 samples tested positive for hydroquinone in samples A, B, D, and E, with a range of Rf values of 0.44, 0.5, 0.52, and 0.5, respectively. The results of the quantitative test showed that 9 samples contained hydroquinone with a sample content range of 0.22 to 3.62 ppm with an LoD value of 0.637 ppm and an LoQ of 2.124 ppm. The results of this study indicate that there are still cosmetics containing hydroquinone, these results are not following the Regulation of Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan (BPOM) No. KH. 00.01.43.2503 of 2009 where the use of this hydroquinone ingredient is prohibited for use in facial whitening creams because it can endanger health. Keywords: Analysis, Hydroquinone, TLC, Whitening Cream
