Abstract

The goal of this study is to determine whether there is the students’ perception of the YouTube application improves their speaking skills in the second-semester academic year 2021-2022 of the English Education Study Program at the Faculty of Language and Literature State University of Makassar. Mixed quantitative and qualitative research methodologies were used. In order to fulfill the study's objectives, the information was gathered through an interview and a Likert questionnaire. The sample of the questionnaire is 30 students and Interviews of 10 students. The results of data analysis show that (1) positive student perceptions of the use of YouTube application in learning speaking skill with the classification, 12 (40%) students classified Strongly positive, (2) According to student explanations provided in interviews about their perspectives of using YouTube, it is a useful and entertaining online learning tool with good characteristics that greatly promote acquiring speaking skills in this age of pandemics. YouTube allows pupils to improve speaking skills despite the pandemic because it still allows for learning many speaking skill with lot of video content education and many native speakers. Keywords— Students Perception, YouTube, Speaking Skill

Abstract

Social Class and Discrimination are social problems that live and are rooted in a social group. Social class is a division of groups with attributes in the form of wealth, power, and education, while discrimination is an act that harms individuals and groups. Then what is meant by social class and discrimination in the film “Upside-Down” by Juan Solanas, and what are the effects of social class and discrimination? In the division of social class, there are several divisions of groups that have an impact in the form of discrimination that occurs. The purpose of this study is to provide an explanation of what is meant by social groups and the discrimination depicted in the film, as well as how these problems impact the main actors of the film. The findings of the study showed that social class is divided into two: the bourgeoisie is a group of people who have power, an economy, and a good education, while the proletariat is a working class that prioritizes physical work and is a group that experiences difficulties in the fields of economy, education, and problems of power. The impact of social class itself has an impact; pressure between groups, creating hostility, difficulty solving problems, and difficulty upholding justice.Keywords— Social Class, Discrimination, Karl Marx, Bourgeoisie, Proletariat.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to improve learners' vocabulary ability. through Synectic strategies. pre-experimental design is the method used by researchers with one group pre-test and post-test. The population in this study were students of class X MAN 1 Barru in the academic year 2022/2023. Cluster random sampling is used in this research. in this case, the researcher chose class X MIA 1 as a representation of the population consisting of 26 students. The results of this study prove that there is a significant difference between students' scores before treatment and students' scores after treatment are evident from the students' pre-test normal scores (56,88) and should be lower than the post-test means (87,04). In addition, by using a Synectic strategy, students can remember words, train students’ creativity, and are effective in teaching vocabulary at MAN 1 Barru Keywords— Synectic Strategy and improve Vocabulary

Abstract

The research objective was to determine the effectiveness of using Brainstorming Techniques in improving students' speaking skills in this case accuracy, fluency and comprehension. This study uses the pre-experimental research method with one pre-test and post-test group. Research using random sampling technique. The sample of this research was students of SMA Negeri 2 Majene grades 11-4 consisting of 27 students. With several topics that researchers use as instruments in the pre-test and post-test. The result of the increase is proven by the t-test value. The findings state that the t-test is greater than the t-table. This indicates that the use of Brainstorming Techniques is effective in improving students' speaking skills. This means that the use of Brainstorming Techniques is effective in developing students' speaking skills in terms of accuracy, fluency and comprehension in grade 11-4 students of SMA Negeri 2 Majene. Keywords— speaking skill, Brainstorming technique, fluency, Accuracy, comprehensibility

Abstract

This study aims to find out the students' English speaking difficulties at SMA Negeri 10 Gowa and then to know the teachers’ strategies used. The researcher uses a case study method through a qualitative approach. To achieve the research objectives, data were collected through questionnaires and interviews. The participants who were included in this study were twelve students from classes X and XI of SMA Negeri 10 Gowa who had met the applied criteria (purposive sampling) and three English teachers. The results of this study indicate that students have speaking problems which are divided into two types, namely psychological problem and language problem. So, the role of the teacher as a facilitator in implementing strategies to overcome student English speaking difficulties is very important based on needs. Various strategies used by teachers to improve students' English speaking skills, such as traditional method, mini dictionary, and role play. Abstract

This research is qualitative research that aim to find out the challenges faced by the students in learning listening comprehension. The population of this study was the second-grade students in the school of SMAN 2 Jeneponto. The sample collection technique from this study used cluster random sampling consisting of 15 students. This research instrument uses interviews. The results of data analysis showed that various factors that cause students to have challenges in listening include; quality of recorded materials, cultural differences, accent, unfamiliar vocabulary, length and speed of listening, and external factors as noise from outside the classroom, unclear teacher voices, and sitting position are the challenges faced by the students in listening comprehension.Keywords— Challenges, Listening Comprehension, Learning English

Abstract

The objective of the research was to determine whether there was a significant effect the use of podcasts on the students listening skills. This research was done at Universitas Negeri Makassar.  The  population  of  this  research  was  the  students  from  Universitas  Negeri Makassar. The researcher used cluster random sampling to choose the sample of the research. The sample of this research was 25 students from class D 2020. The researcher used a quantitative technique.  The instrument of  this research  was a  liste ning test  using audio podcast which was administered as a pretest and post-test. Based on the result of data analysis showed that the use of audio podcast improved the students listening skill. It was shown by the mean post-test score which was higher than the mean pretest score (63.63>51.76). Then, the researcher concluded that using audio podcasts on the listening skills has a significant effect on students listening skill.Keywords: Audio-Podcast, Listening Skill

Abstract

This study was a pre-experimental research that aimed to find out whether the use of podcast improves EFL students' listening skill at SMAN 12 Makassar. The independent variable of this study is the use of podcast and the dependent variable is the students' listening skill. The population of this study was all of the students of XI MIPA Classes of SMAN 12 Makassar and the sample was XI MIPA 2 class with 36 students. The research sample was selected by using a cluster random sampling. The research data were obtained by giving a multiple choices listening tests in the pretest and posttest. The analysis technique used in this research was descriptive statistical and inferential statistical techniques. Based on the analysis results, P = 0.000 is smaller than α = 0.05 and the students’ mean score in posttest (77.77) was higher than the students’ mean score in the pretest (56.25). So, it was concluded that the use of podcast significantly improved the listening skill of EFL students at SMAN 12 Makassar. This research only focused on the use of audio podcast on Spotify in improving students' listening skill. Future researchers may be able to conduct research to find out how audio podcasts or other types of podcasts can improve other skills such as speaking, reading, and writing.Key words-- podcast, listening skill

Abstract

This research is pre-experimental in one-group-pretest-postest design that aimed to find out whether or not the implementation of role models improved the students' descriptive writing skills in SMKN 1 KAB. Wajo and students’ interest. The sample of this research is 23 students of a class at the ten grade students in SMKN 1 KAB. WAJO in academic year 2021/2022. To get data, the researcher gives a pre-test before the treatment. The treatment that has been given to students is to explain material regarding descriptive text in 4 meetings, the researcher explains the components of writing, explains what role models are, and several types of role models. Thus treatment result can be known to be more accurate because it can compare the condition before given the treatment. After that, the data are analysed using SPSS 25.0. The result showed that the students descriptive writing text for X AKL students of SMK Negeri 1 Wajo before applying the treatment (pre-test) are categorized as very poor with an mean score of 76,96. Meanwhile, the results of students descriptive writing test for class X students of SMK Negeri 1 Wajo after applying the Treatment (post-test) were categorized as quite good with an mean score of 85,61. Moreover, the results of students interest for X AKL students of SMK Negeri 1 Wajo before applying the treatment (pre-test) are categorized as very poor with an mean score of 70,65. Meanwhile, the results of students descriptive writing test for class X students of SMK Negeri 1 Wajo after applying the Treatment (post-test) were categorized as quite good with an mean score of 84,74. It can be proven by the hypothesis value was lower than P (0.000 ˂ 0.05) which means (H1) was accepted. Therefore, it is concluded that role models improve the writing skill of the eleventh-grade students of SMK Negeri 1 Wajo. Keywords— role model, descriptive text, writing skill

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to find out whether the use of English pop song improve the listening skill of the second year students at SMA Negeri 3 Jeneponto. The independent variable in this study was the use of English pop songs while the dependent variable is listening skill. The population in this research was the students of class XI at SMA Negeri 3 Jeneponto, while the sample was students of class XI MIA 1 consist of 19 students. The research data was obtained by giving a listening test in the form of pretest and post test. The data analysis technique was descriptive statistics and t-test. Based on the results of the analysis, the probability value = 0.001 was lower than the level of significance value = 0.05. It can be concluded that the use of English pop songs can improve the listening skills of the students class XI MIA 1 at SMA Negeri 3 Jeneponto.Keywords— Improving, Pop Song, Listening Skill.
