Abstract

This quasi-experimental study was conducted to determine the impact of the implementation of lesson study on students' motivation in mathematics and mathematics achievement as well as gender in a public university in Selangor, Malaysia. Seven mathematics lecturers, a physic lecturer and researcher, formed a lesson study group. This group planned and designed five research lessons about the functions focusing on problem-solving. A lecturer was chosen randomly to teach these lessons to his classes as experimental and control groups. In this study, mathematics motivation test (5-point Likert-type scale ranging from 1 (not at all true) to 5 (very true)) and lecturers developed tests were used to investigate the impact of lesson study on mathematics motivation and achievement. The data were analyzed by using independent t-test, ANOVA test, MANOVA test and non-parametric the Kruskal-Wallis test. The results of this study showed that students in the experimental group obtained better results in both motivation and achievement tests. Also, there is no statistically significant interaction between the effects of educational method and gender on mathematics achievement scores. Furthermore, the results showed that the level of motivation is different among groups by gender, but there were no significant mean differences among groups in any of subscales.

Abstract

Understanding students' metacognitive skills in solving math problems concerning their mathematical abilities is crucial for identifying the cognitive processes involved in problem-solving. This study investigates the metacognitive skills of SMPN 3 Palu students with varying mathematical abilities in problem-solving. It focuses on students in class VIIJ during the 2022/2023 academic year, individually analyzing one high-ability and one low-ability student. The research, descriptive in nature, employs qualitative methods using written assignments and interviews for data collection. This study's analysis involved condensing data, presenting findings, and drawing conclusions. The findings reveal distinct approaches between high and low mathematical ability subjects. High-ability students consistently apply all three metacognitive skills (planning, monitoring, and assessment) across each problem-solving stage. Conversely, low-ability students demonstrate a limited use of metacognitive skills. While they employ planning at each stage, during implementation and result review, they primarily engage in planning and monitoring, neglecting assessment. Ultimately, it underscores the critical role of metacognitive skills in mathematical problem-solving, highlighting differences in their application between students of varying mathematical abilities.

Abstract

Grade Point Averages (GPA) are known to give fair assessment of students performance in an academic degree programme, and students ability to successfully complete a degree programme is also known to depend on their level 100 GPA. In this paper we sought to determine factors that significantly affect academic performance of Level 100 students of the University of Ghana. Questionnaires method was used to collect the data for analysis, and regression analysis was carried out on the data to determine the effect of gender, residential status, and previous high school on Grade GPA of level 100 students. At the end of the analysis it was found that the above-mentioned factors do not significantly affect GPA. However, we found that the programme a level 100 student offers, significantly affects the student’s GPA.
