Abstract

Negotiation Discourse of Femininity Through Disney Princesses’ Movies. Femininity tends to be explained as a condition ‘to be a woman’, making it an ideology that gives limitations to women. Mills uses discourse theory to explain femininity, stating femininity is a process that is constructed and negotiated in every interaction. Disney Princesses show changes through times and each animation film, showing a negotiation of what defines femininity. The data collection was carried out by qualitative method narrative study, with Performativity of Gender by Judith Butler and Negotiation Discourse of Femininity theory by Sara Mills. Thirteen Disney Princesses were used as researched objects to show the slow changing of femininity. The results of this study show a change in Disney Princesses, through long negotiations based on the wave of feminism that occurred with the Disney Princess characters featured. Indications have shown through the Disney Princess characters who initially showed only stereotypes of feminine elements—such as being passive, gentle, not leaving their safe zone, becoming a Disney Princess who also showed stereotypical masculinity elements— such as being physically active, not easily afraid to discover new things, and showing bravery. This slow shift does not change the identity of Disney Princesses as a princess and as a woman.

Abstract

This article deals with the issues of sawer that have appeared over time, both in live and online performances. This topic is interesting because sawer is intertwined in the interaction and participation of two active subjects, namely the singer and her audience. In live performances, the exchange between singers and their audiences happens in the same space and time. On the other hand, accommodating sawer in online dangdut performances is a challenge. However, in 2020 there was a lot of interaction and participation—and even sawer—in online shows. I believe this is not the first glimpse of this phenomenon because online sawer places dangdut beyond its physical space and expands the range of interaction between the performer and the audience. In the wider context, this phenomenon is proof of cosmopolitanism and globalization in the online world. According to that hypothesis, this article attempts to articulate the many varieties and complexities of the sawer phenomenon. Although there is an issue about globalization and its impact (read: reduction of diversity), through dangdut—and sawer— the issue can be negotiated freely and easily. In this research, literature studies and digital ethnography will be used to investigate the phenomenon. There are two findings in this research, first, the patterns and process of digital sawer; and second, how society responds to the global world using local ways and logic. It can be concluded that through Dangdut, the global platform is used locally and will remain local, especially looking at the quantity and activeness of Indonesian netizens.

Abstract

The present paper provides a cognitive linguistics (CL) framework for analyzing the semantic structure of Arabic spatial noun fawqa based on Principled Polysemy Model (PPM) of Tyler and Evans (2003). PPM approach can broaden the narrow view of classical cognitive linguists regarding the semantic variation in the concept of physical- geometry of a preposition. As a polysemous lexeme, fawqa used by Arabian native to express a broad range of meanings, not only spatial relation but also non-spatial relation. The substantial sense of the lexeme is investigated using a large amount of corpus data (corpus.kacst.edu.sa) and applying the five steps of PPM approach. Through this approach, we ascertain that every single usage of fawqa expressing extended senses is always in its semantic network. Our study reveals that the usages of this lexeme in many situations and many cases show non-up down spatial relation, and non-physical relation, but they essentially refer to the primary sense.

Abstract

This research is an annotated translation study. The author conducted an Indonesian- Chinese translation of two chapters of the biography named Tokoh Tionghoa & Identitas Indonesia: dari Tjoe Bou San sampai Yap Thiam Hien and gave annotations to important and necessary parts. The specific purposes of this research can be described as follows: (1) find the appropriate method to translate this source text; (2) find out proper translation techniques and provide reasons for choosing equivalence. In translating this biography, the author uses communicative translation (Newmark, 1988) and considers the dynamic equivalence theory of Nida and Taber (1982) as the main principle. Annotations are divided into six groups, namely: culturally charged words, phrases that are translated into Chinese idioms, proper nouns, metaphors, footnote, and sentences. To translate a text successfully, translators need not only a good mastery of languages but also broad knowledge.

Abstract

As a form of cultural process, acculturation serves as an important factor in tourism. Usually, the hosts borrow the results of acculturation generated from tourism activities more than the tourists or guests do. Acculturation in tourism occurs not only in tourism practices today, but also in those in the past, including the tourism practices in Indonesia during the Dutch colonial era. This article discusses acculturation which became part of tourism activities in the Dutch East Indies by applying historical methods and Nunez’s concept of acculturation in tourism. By using guidebooks, newspapers, magazines, postcards, photographs, and travelogues as data sources, this article traced the result of acculturation at that time. Results show that acculturation really took place in the tourism activities in the Dutch East Indies. There were material objects and customs which served as tourism facilities and could be seen, performed, and enjoyed by the tourists. It can be concluded that at that time the tourists or guests borrowed the results of acculturation more than the hosts did.

Abstract

Amidst the debates over the most appropriate Indonesian term for ‘woman’, the present research examines the use of the gendered terms perempuan and wanita. The aim of this research is to reveal which term is more preferable and how the terms are used to talk about women. Using corpus-based approach, this study compared the frequency and pattern of word usage of perempuan and wanita obtained from two corpora, namely IndonesianWac and ind_mixed_2013. The research used a mixed-method design in which quantitative analysis was used to identify word frequency and to measure significant collocation, while qualitative analysis was used to determine meanings on the basis of semantic preference. The study reveals that the term wanita tends to be more frequently used than the term perempuan to signify ‘woman’. In terms of meaning, both terms are used to talk about women in relation to their body (especially their reproductive functions), other people (particularly men), family, and age. The difference is that perempuan tends to be used to talk about women in relation to gender equality and organization, while wanita tends to focus on women’s sexual relationship. Furthermore, results strongly indicate that perempuan tends to denote women in relation to their roles in public domain, whereas wanita tends to denote women in relation to their roles in domestic domain.

Abstract

Menglongshi (hanzi: 朦胧诗) or ‘misty poetry’ (also translated as ‘obscure poetry’) is one kind of Chinese poems created by young poets who experienced the Cultural Revolution in 1970s. The emergence of a new style of poetry which is different from the previous styles marked a new era of poetry writing in China. Its uniqueness lies in wordplay, metaphor, synesthesia, and symbols whose meanings cannot be easily identified. The misty poem also drew the cautious attention of the Chinese government, because the symbols and sequence of sentences were suspected to contain thoughts which are considered not in accordance with the government’s policies. Bei Dao and Gu Cheng were known as two of the most important misty poets. This paper analyzes two poems by Bei Dao and two poems by Gu Cheng in terms of their intrinsic elements, such as imagery and language style in order to interpret their meaning. Furthermore, in order to provide more supporting evidence, this research also analyzes the poems’ extrinsic elements to identify their respective meanings in a more comprehensive way. Therefore, the explanation for the occurrence of Cultural Revolution is a very important finding in this research. This study sought to explain the important role of misty poems in explaining the Cultural Revolution by examining Bei Dao and Gu Cheng’s works.

Abstract

This research on translation problems aims to examine the translation of cultural words in the novel Entrok (2010) into The Years of the Voiceless (2013). This research was conducted by applying qualitative and functional approaches, while the data were analyzed by applying Williams and Chesterman’s causal comparative model to identify the translation procedures which were applied to fulfill the available skopos. Based on Newmark’s categorization of cultural words, the researcher identified 80 cultural words which were categorized into three general groups: (1) material culture; (2) social culture and leisure; and (3) organization, customs, procedure, activity, and concept. The data were collected through library research and an interview with the translator. The researcher then used the causal comparative technique to compare between cultural words contained in the source text and their respective equivalents, and to analyze the translation procedures chosen by the translator to fulfill the skopos. There are four translation problems found in this research: (1) an SL concept and referent does not have the same TL concept and referent, (2) an SL concept and referent is not lexicalized in TL, (3) TL lacks of specific words, and (4) SL and TL have different ways of viewing a referent. To deal with those translation problems, the translator applied nine procedures consisting of explicitation, generalization, literal equivalent, calque, couplet (transference and footnote, transposition and cultural equivalent, and transposition and functional equivalent), cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, functional equivalent, and transference. The skopos was fulfilled through the application of translation procedures by taking account of ST context. According to a number of TT readers, the translator is considered successful in maintaining the author’s language style and producing the atmosphere of the source culture. The use of footnotes helps TT readers to understand ST cultural words better, but it also reduces the readers’ comfort in reading the TT.

Abstract

Religions have become the main topics in the novels by a prolific Singaporean author, Isa Kamari (born in 1960). His understanding and interpretation of religions have begun to develop with the writing of his first novel Satu Bumi (One Earth) in 1998. His latest novel, Tweet (2016) was influenced by an allegorical and mystical work, Persidangan Burung (Bird Conference) (c.1177). Two main narratives, one in the form of a physical nature between a grandfather and his grandson in a bird garden in Singapore and the other in the form of a spiritual nature concerning spiritual birds, ran parallel and converged at a number of important crossroads. These narratives also offered an understanding and appreciation of spirituality that could change and form life on earth in positive and integrated manners that eventually led to goodness rather than to escape from it.

Abstract

Critical Discourse Analysis is a study that analyzes language usage in terms of linguistic features and a social practice. Each type of mass media shows a different tendency in conveying information through the language it uses. Likewise, there are some differences between government and non-government media as well. The data in this study were obtained by collecting texts related to WannaCry virus news taken from the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology, Kompas.com and JawaPos.com. Abductive inferences technique was used to draw conclusions by connecting one text to other texts. The different tendencies in media’s linguistic features and ideologies were described using critical discourse analysis and Fairclough’s three interrelated analysis processes (i.e. the dimension of text description, the dimension of discourse practice by textual interpretation, and the dimension of socio-cultural by text explanation). The results of this study showed that the three media had some differences in both of their linguistic features and ideology.
