Abstract

Village officials’ performance is critical to effective local governance and public service delivery. This study examines the effects of job placement, rewards, and work motivation on the performance of village officials in Jiwan District, Madiun Regency. A quantitative research design was employed, involving all 95 village officials from 14 villages through saturated sampling. Data were collected using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire and analysed through multiple linear regression in SPSS after the relevant model assumptions were assessed. The results demonstrate that job placement, rewards, and work motivation each have a positive and significant effect on village officials’ performance. Rewards emerged as the dominant predictor, underscoring the importance of recognising officials’ contributions through financial and non-financial forms of appreciation. Collectively, the three predictors significantly explain 50.3% of the variation in performance, while the remaining 49.7% is attributable to factors outside the model. These findings extend the public-sector human resource management literature by demonstrating the combined importance of appropriate placement, equitable rewards, and sustained motivation in strengthening performance at the village-government level. The study highlights the need for village governments to implement integrated, transparent, and merit-based human resource policies that promote professional, responsive, and performance-oriented officials while improving the quality of public service delivery.

Abstract

Human development is a central concern in regional policy because economic advancement does not necessarily translate into improved quality of life. However, research modelling nonlinear relationships between the Human Development Index (HDI) and socioeconomic factors across the regencies and municipalities of West Sumatra using Local Polynomial Regression (LPR) remains limited. This study aims to model HDI based on the senior high school net enrolment rate (NER), gross regional domestic product (GRDP), and population density. A quantitative, nonexperimental, cross-sectional design was employed using 2023 secondary data from Statistics Indonesia covering 19 regencies and municipalities. The data were analysed using nonparametric LPR with a local-linear estimator and optimal bandwidth selection. The findings indicate that all three predictors are positively associated with HDI, with senior high school NER exhibiting the strongest correlation. The model achieved an R² of 0.9147, a root mean squared error of 1.3458, and a mean absolute error of 1.0292, demonstrating its ability to capture nonlinear patterns and explain regional variation in HDI. This study contributes to regional development modelling by demonstrating the applicability of LPR to multidimensional human development data. The findings provide an empirical basis for more context-sensitive development policies that integrate educational participation, economic capacity, and population distribution.

Abstract

Friendship quality has received growing attention as a social factor associated with well-being; however, its relationship with mental well-being among university students during thesis completion remains insufficiently examined. This study investigated the relationship between friendship quality and mental well-being among final-year university students completing their undergraduate theses. A quantitative, non-experimental survey design was employed, involving 389 students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using the McGill Friendship Questionnaire–Friend’s Functions and the Warwick–Edinburgh Mental Well-Being Scale and analyzed using Spearman’s rank-order correlation. The results revealed a strong, positive, and statistically significant relationship between friendship quality and mental well-being (rₛ = .637, p < .001). Friendship quality was predominantly high among participants (90.23%), while 55.01% reported high mental well-being. These findings identify friendship as an important relational resource for students navigating the academic demands of thesis completion and extend understanding of the social factors associated with mental well-being during this critical academic period. Universities should therefore strengthen peer-support networks and provide collaborative academic spaces that enable students to remain socially connected while completing their theses. Future longitudinal research should examine this relationship over time and incorporate additional psychological and academic factors.

Abstract

Libraries play a critical role in supporting education, research, and community literacy; however, the effectiveness of their services depends substantially on librarian performance and circulation management. At the Pariaman City Library and Archives Service, circulation activities remain manually administered during the transition toward digitalization, creating administrative and operational constraints. This study aimed to examine circulation service management, identify its principal challenges, and assess librarian performance. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, involving five purposively selected informants: the Head of the Library Division, one circulation service officer, and three library users. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. Circulation service management was analyzed using George R. Terry’s framework of planning, organizing, actuating, and controlling. The findings indicate that all four management functions have been implemented but remain suboptimal, particularly regarding the dissemination of service plans, staff scheduling, workload distribution, and follow-up on evaluation results. The principal challenges include limited resources, reliance on manual transaction records, and difficulties in locating library collections. Although librarians demonstrate satisfactory interpersonal performance when assisting users, their technical and administrative performance requires improvement. The study concludes that strengthening management practices and accelerating the digitalization of circulation services are essential to improving operational efficiency and service quality. These findings provide practical guidance for library administrators seeking to optimize librarian performance and modernize circulation management in resource-constrained public libraries.

Abstract

Digital technology has transformed students’ reading practices by shifting engagement from printed materials toward digital media. Wattpad provides access to diverse digital texts, predominantly fiction and user-generated content; however, its relationship with university students’ reading behavior requires further examination. This study aimed to analyze the effect of Wattpad use on the reading behavior of students in the Library and Information Science Study Program at Universitas Negeri Padang. A quantitative descriptive approach was employed. The study population comprised 250 students, from whom a sample of 71 respondents was determined using the Slovin formula. Data were collected through a Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive statistics and simple linear regression with SPSS. The findings indicate that both Wattpad use and students’ reading behavior were categorized as good. Wattpad use had a positive and statistically significant effect on reading behavior, explaining 36.3% of its variance (R² = .363). These findings demonstrate that engagement with Wattpad contributes meaningfully to students’ reading behavior. The study highlights the potential of Wattpad as a complementary digital reading medium for promoting reading engagement and strengthening digital literacy initiatives in higher education.

Abstract

The relationship between radicalization and asymmetric warfare remains insufficiently explained in historically grounded analyses of non-state armed groups. This study examines radicalization as a pathway to asymmetric warfare through a historical analysis of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) in the Southern Philippines. Employing a qualitative literature-based approach, the study draws on academic books, peer-reviewed journal articles, research reports, and official documents addressing the Moro conflict, ASG’s historical development, radicalization, terrorism, and asymmetric warfare. The data were examined through qualitative content analysis and historical process tracing, with Moghaddam’s Staircase to Terrorism serving as the primary analytical framework. The findings demonstrate that ASG’s development was embedded in a protracted historical context characterized by colonial legacies, political marginalization, socioeconomic disparities, land disputes, and perceived injustice. These conditions facilitated the emergence of radical narratives that were subsequently reinforced by Salafi-jihadist ideology, organizational recruitment, military training, and transnational connections. Radicalization also coincided with organizational and strategic transformation, as reflected in the increasing use of kidnapping, hostage-taking, bombing, ship hijacking, and criminal financing. Amid substantial military and organizational asymmetries between ASG and the Philippine state, these unconventional forms of violence provided the group with alternative means of confrontation. The study concludes that radicalization does not automatically produce asymmetric warfare; rather, it constitutes a pathway through which grievances are ideologically reframed, violence is legitimized, organizational capacity is developed, and unconventional strategies become viable for a weaker non-state actor. These findings contribute a historically grounded explanation of how radicalization processes can enable non-state armed groups to adopt asymmetric modes of warfare.

Abstract

The rapid development of digital technology has encouraged micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) to adopt e-commerce as a business development strategy. However, such adoption depends not only on technological availability but also on users’ perceptions of its benefits, usability, and emerging technological capabilities. This study examines the effects of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, and artificial intelligence (AI) integration on e-commerce adoption among food MSMEs in Pasuruan City. Employing a quantitative explanatory design, the study involved 100 respondents. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4.0. The findings reveal that perceived usefulness has a positive and significant effect on e-commerce adoption, whereas perceived ease of use and AI integration have no significant effects. These results identify perceived business benefits as the primary factor underlying e-commerce adoption among food MSMEs in the study context. The study provides empirical evidence that the perceived value of digital technology may be more consequential to adoption than its perceived usability or AI-enabled capabilities. Accordingly, MSME digitalization strategies should prioritize the delivery and communication of tangible business value, supported by continuous digital training, mentoring, and technological facilitation.

Abstract

The digital transformation of tax administration through the Coretax Administration System requires companies to adapt their compliance processes for withholding, issuing electronic withholding tax certificates, paying, and reporting Article 23 Income Tax. This study analyzes the implementation of Coretax-based E-Bupot Unification in fulfilling Article 23 Income Tax obligations at PT Karya Machindo Industries. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, with data collected through observations, interviews, and documentation and analyzed through data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the implementation of Coretax-based E-Bupot Unification generally complies with applicable tax regulations and improves administrative efficiency. However, its implementation remains constrained by unclear descriptions of transaction objects on invoices, limited human resources, and system disruptions that may compromise the accuracy of tax withholding. The study concludes that Coretax facilitates the fulfillment of Article 23 Income Tax obligations, although its effectiveness depends on stronger transaction-identification and verification procedures. These findings contribute practical evidence regarding corporate adaptation to digital tax administration and underscore the need for companies to verify taxable transaction objects carefully before entering data into the Coretax system.

Abstract

Although rupiah redenomination has long featured in Bank Indonesia’s monetary policy discourse as a means of simplifying currency denominations without altering the exchange rate or real purchasing power, public concerns about declining purchasing power and price rounding underscore the need for effective policy communication. This study analyzes Indonesian public sentiment toward rupiah redenomination using the Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm to classify YouTube comments. Data were collected through the YouTube Data API v3 from 1,763 comments posted on the Tribunnews video titled Purbaya Targets Rupiah Redenomination Bill to Be Completed in 2027. Following text cleaning and tokenization, 1,169 comments were retained and transformed using Term Frequency–Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF). Manual labeling classified 657 comments as positive and 512 as negative. The XGBoost model, trained using optimized hyperparameters, achieved an accuracy of 73.39%, with F1-scores of 0.772 for positive sentiment and 0.680 for negative sentiment. These results indicate that the model classified positive sentiment more effectively, although ambiguous comments remained challenging. The findings reveal the distribution of public responses to the proposed policy and emphasize the need for intensive public outreach to mitigate potential resistance and misconceptions. This study contributes a data-driven basis for developing more effective monetary policy communication and anticipating the social dynamics associated with rupiah redenomination.

Abstract

Air quality is a critical environmental determinant of public health and quality of life. In Indonesia, air quality is commonly monitored using the Air Pollution Standard Index (ISPU), which classifies conditions according to pollutant concentrations. This study develops an air quality classification model using a backpropagation neural network and the DKI Jakarta ISPU dataset. The input variables comprised PM₁₀, PM₂.₅, SO₂, CO, O₃, and NO₂, while air quality was classified into three categories: Good, Moderate, and Unhealthy. The analytical procedure included data cleaning, min–max normalization, partitioning the dataset into 80% training and 20% testing subsets, and tuning the learning rate and number of hidden neurons. Model performance was evaluated using a confusion matrix, accuracy, Cohen’s kappa, sensitivity, and specificity. The optimal model, configured with a learning rate of 0.5 and six hidden neurons, achieved an accuracy of 97.67% and a kappa value of 0.933, indicating almost perfect agreement between predicted and observed classifications. High sensitivity and specificity across all categories further confirmed the model’s ability to distinguish air quality levels accurately. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of the backpropagation neural network for classifying air quality based on DKI Jakarta ISPU data and provide a methodological basis for developing data-driven air quality monitoring and public health decision-support systems.
