Abstract

Business development in the Auditorium Park of Tanjungpura University, especially street vendors, has increased, giving rise to increasingly competitive competition between street vendors. This study aims to describe and analyse the factors of public acceptance of street vendors, the situation of the existence of street vendors and target object factors that influence the emergence and increase of street vendors around the Auditorium Park of Tanjungpura University Pontianak. The method used in this study is a qualitative research method using a descriptive approach-data collection using interviews, observation, and documentation. The data analysis techniques used are data reduction, data presentation and conclusion. The results of this study showed that several factors were found, such as the public acceptance of street vendors who were dominant to an unfavourable view of the existence of street vendors that caused congestion and slums around the Auditorium Park. Then, from the Situation factor, the existence of street vendors makes it irregular, and the scattered garbage creates a shabby impression around the park. The last factor of the target object of street vendors is the park, which is one of the objects, and the presence of visitors or people who gather in the park auditorium to attract street vendors. Suggestions addressed to Tanjungpura University must be given clear regulations and strict action from Tanjungpura University for street vendors selling in Tanjungpura University Auditorium Park so that they are orderly so as not to take the shoulder of the road that hinders the mobility of road users. To the Government, street vendors must be given a unique, strategic and spacious place so that street vendors are free to trade and the city layout is neatly arranged.

Abstract

This qualitative case study analysed the utilization of symbolic interactionism, pragmatism, and social constructionism in recent development communication campaigns in Nigeria. A dataset of 87 campaigns over the last 5 years across rural, urban, northern, southern, and coastal regions was compiled. Deductive and inductive thematic analysis examined shared meanings, communicative actions towards desired ends, socially constructed representations, and additional context-specific patterns. These theoretical lenses provide valuable insights into target audiences, messaging techniques, and facilitating behavioural and social change. Symbolic interactionism focuses on shared meanings arising through social interactions and informs the cultural framing of campaign messages. Pragmatism suggests appealing to the practical impacts on people’s lives rather than abstract principles to motivate change. Finally, social constructionism sees societal issues as constructed through discourse, which campaigns can influence through strategic communication. Together, these three perspectives offer a conceptual toolkit for designing resonant campaigns, grounded in the local context, that raise awareness on issues like poverty, health, and gender equality while also shaping public discourse and norms in the longer term. Further scholarship on practical applications of these theories can improve developmental outcomes in Nigeria. This desk analysis provides a foundation for future empirical studies on campaign design and reception, and sets an agenda for theory-driven communication strategies that create meaningful social change.

Abstract

Pain during labor is a natural process caused by cervical dilatation, hypoxia of the uterine muscles during contractions, ischemia of the uterine corpus, stretching of the lower uterine segment, and compression of the cervical nerves. If labor pain occurs pathologically, it can trigger complications in pregnancy, one of which is prolonged labor. Data from the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2020 show that the maternal mortality rate is still high, with 295,000 women dying due to complications during pregnancy and childbirth. Prolonged labor is one of the fifth causes of maternal death in the world, accounting for 8.5% of cases. Pain can be relieved pharmacologically and non-pharmacologically, with one non-pharmacological method being lemon aromatherapy. This study aims to determine the effect of lemon aromatherapy on reducing pain intensity in the active phase of the first stage of labor at Painan Hospital in 2023.This research used a quasi-experimental design with a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest. The study was conducted in July 2023, using both primary and secondary data. The sample consisted of 30 respondents selected through total sampling techniques. Data analysis was performed using Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney non-parametric statistical analysis techniques. The results of the study showed that most participants in the intervention group experienced controlled severe pain before and after the intervention, while the control group mostly experienced moderate pain before the intervention and uncontrolled severe pain after the intervention. The Mann-Whitney test indicated a significant difference in pain intensity between the intervention and control groups, with a p-value of 0.000 < α (0.05), leading to the rejection of the null hypothesis. The researchers recommend that health services provide support to mothers experiencing pain during labor to ensure a comfortable birthing process.

Abstract

Income smoothing is the intentional normalizing of profits to a specified level or trend. Smoothing is an attempt by the company's management to lessen anomalous variations in profitability, to the extent permitted by solid accounting and management standards. This study aims to explore the effects of many factors, including stock value, dividend policy, firm size, profitability, and financial leverage, on income smoothing approaches. The population of the study consisted of the 84 food and beverage companies that were listed on IDX between 2020 and 2022. The sampling process provides 20 companies for a three-year observation period using a purposive sample method. Logistic regression analysis is used in the data analysis process using the SPSS 26 program. The study's findings indicate that income smoothing is influenced by all variables at the same time. Variable dividend policies significantly have effect on income smoothing, partially. However, there is no effect between the factors of stock value, company size, profitability, or leverage.

Abstract

Gender roles are assumptions that individuals, and the general public have of people based on their biological characteristics. These assumptions are usually as a result of values and beliefs of the society. In spite of the global war against gender inequalities, many societies in Africa are structured in a way that socio-cultural norms form the basis of gender roles. This reflects on many households where men are typically favoured than women in gender roles. However, changing trends across the world has impacted on many areas of society. Therefore, the study assessed the key factors influencing changing gender roles among farm families in Osun State, Nigeria. Data were collected through interview schedule. Multi-stage sampling technique was used to select twenty (20) rural farming households from eight Local Government Areas in the State. Data were described and analyzed using percentage, mean and Pearson product moment correlation. Findings revealed a mean age of 43.5 ± 11.73 years. The mean household size was 6.9±1.7 persons. Access to education and resources (p =0.001) and economic opportunities (p = 0.002). Likewise, environmental factors generally had significant influence on changing gender roles (p = 0.01). This study points to the importance of ensuring that the fair share of responsibilities with regards to gender roles in society is constantly promoted and highlights of their contributions is well recognized.

Abstract

Forest and land fires in Sungai Raya District, Kubu Raya Regency, severely impact environmental pollution and public health. This condition causes quite significant ecological and social losses. First, the smoke produced from these fires contains various dangerous substances, such as carbon monoxide, dust particles, and toxic chemicals. Continuous exposure to these substances can cause respiratory problems, respiratory tract diseases, and other health problems in local communities. Apart from that, forest fires also result in the loss of natural habitat for various species of flora and fauna. Disrupted ecosystems can cause biodiversity loss and affect local food chains. Recovery of fire-affected ecosystems takes a long time, and some species may experience local extinction due to habitat loss. Furthermore, preventing and responding to forest fires requires significant resources in terms of personnel and equipment. Funds allocated for firefighting can disrupt local government budgets that should be used for infrastructure development and community welfare programs. Therefore, forest fires harm the environment and health and impose an economic burden on the people of Sungai Raya District. Efforts to prevent forest and land fires and educate the public regarding the risks of prevention are essential to overcome these negative impacts. Sustainable measures such as law enforcement against illegal forest burning, sustainable land management, and increasing public awareness of the importance of preserving the environment can help reduce fire risks and protect public health.

Abstract

This article analyzes the effectiveness of using the Pintu Pontianak integration application in realizing a Smart City in the Siantan Hilir Village area, North Pontianak District. Jendela Pontianak Integrasi (JEPIN) implements the Smart City concept adopted by the Pontianak City government to facilitate public access to information and public services. Even though it is aimed at people who actively use technology, several obstacles hinder the effectiveness and acceptance of this application. Among them are the complexity of features and terms in applications that still need to be fully understood by the public and a need for more awareness of the benefits of the innovative city concept. Socialization efforts carried out by the government have yet to fully increase public understanding and interest in the JEPIN application. Therefore, concrete steps such as simplifying the user interface, increasing socialization, and regular evaluation are needed to ensure the success and broader acceptance of the JEPIN application. In this way, JEPIN can be a more effective tool in supporting Pontianak City's Smart City vision and improving the quality of public services for the community.
