Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines how Alicia Berenson responds to the power relations exercised by Theo Faber in Alex Michaelides’s The Silent Patient (2019). The research problem arises from the tendency to view subordinate characters within clinical institutions as entirely passive, whereas Michel Foucault’s notion of power relations always leaves room for resistance. This study aims to identify the forms of Alicia’s responses to the institutional, epistemic, and disciplinary control exercised over her by Theo. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data in the form of narrative excerpts, dialogues, and diary entries were collected and analysed through Foucault’s concepts of institutional power, power-knowledge, discipline and surveillance, and resistance. The findings show that Alicia’s responses develop in four forms: her sustained silence as an active refusal to be extracted, her diary and painting as alternative spaces of expression that resist clinical classification, her direct confrontational acts that momentarily reverse the observing and observed positions, and her final disclosure of knowledge that reverses the informational asymmetry between her and Theo. The study concludes that although none of these responses fully dismantles the power structures confining her, their presence demonstrates that a dominated subject retains agency within power relations.

Abstract

This study investigates how musical identity is constructed through discourse and multimodal communication in a podcast interview featuring Paul Jason Klein, the lead vocalist of LANY. The study aims to examine how Paul Klein employs Gee’s (2014) Seven Building Tasks of Language and how verbal and multimodal resources jointly contribute to the construction of his musical identity. A descriptive qualitative design was employed using the podcast episode LANY Breaks Down Their New Album, Paul Klein’s Car Accident, And What’s Next published on the Spout Podcast YouTube channel as the primary data source. The verbal data were analyzed using Gee’s Seven Building Tasks of Language, while multimodal elements, including facial expressions, gestures, eye contact, tone of voice, posture, and visual composition, were examined using Kress and van Leeuwen’s (2006) Multimodal Discourse Analysis. The interpretation of musical identity was guided by the framework proposed by MacDonald and Saarikallio (2022), consisting of Musical Journey, Values and Beliefs, Creative Process, Fan Relationship, and Digital Self-Presentation. The findings reveal that Paul Klein employs all seven Building Tasks of Language to communicate meanings, establish relationships, express artistic values, and construct his identity as an authentic musician. Moreover, discourse and multimodal resources function complementarily in representing his resilience, creativity, emotional openness, and close relationship with audiences. The study demonstrates that musical identity in digital media is constructed through the integration of linguistic and multimodal resources rather than through language alone.

Abstract

This research investigates the psychological transformation of Loulie al-Nazari, protagonist of Chelsea Abdullah’s The Stardust Thief, by combining Christopher Vogler’s twelve-stage adaptation of Joseph Campbell’s monomyth with Carl Jung’s theory of archetypes. Three aims guide the study: identifying how Vogler’s twelve stages manifest in Loulie’s narrative arc, determining which internal and external factors drive her psychological development, and evaluating the resulting shift in her identity and self-perception. A qualitative descriptive design, supported by close reading and content analysis of the novel as primary data, is used to reach these aims. Results indicate that Loulie’s arc realizes all twelve of Vogler’s stages, opening with a forced call to adventure and advancing through mounting trials before reaching a decisive reckoning with her hidden past inside the ruins of the Queen of Dunes. Jung’s archetypes account for the internal dimension of this development: the Shadow surfaces as the grief she buries after her tribe’s destruction, the Persona takes shape as the Midnight Merchant guise she uses for self-protection, and the Animus emerges in the resilience and nerve she calls upon across the quest. Externally, the surrounding cast enacts Vogler’s archetypal roles, Qadir as Mentor, Omar as Shadow, Mazen as Ally, and Aisha as Shapeshifter. As the narrative closes, Loulie edges toward individuation, reclaiming a name and history she once suppressed and arriving at a more unified sense of self. The research concludes that Abdullah’s novel illustrates the continued cross-cultural relevance of the Campbell–Vogler model.

Abstract

This study examines the apology strategies used by social media influencers in written public apologies following incidents of public criticism and cancel culture. The phenomenon of the online ‘apology clarification’ has become a recognizable communicative genre, yet not all such statements meet the criteria for a sincere apologetic speech act. Grounded in Speech Act Theory (Searle, 1969) and the apology strategy taxonomy of Cohen and Olshtain (1981) as further developed by Trosborg (1995), this research adopts a descriptive qualitative, case-study design to analyze written apology statements posted on X (Twitter) and Facebook by five influencers, two representing an Eastern (Indonesian) cultural background and three representing a Western (American) cultural background. The data were interpreted through the lens of Brown and Levinson’s (1987) Politeness Theory to explain how each strategy functions to protect the speaker’s face. The findings show that all six apology strategies appeared across the data, with influencers consistently combining at least three strategies within a single statement rather than relying on one. Acknowledgement of Responsibility and Expression of Apology (IFID) emerged as the most frequently used strategies overall, while Minimization of the Offense appeared more selectively and was associated with lower perceived sincerity. Cultural patterning was also evident: Indonesian influencers favored repeated, polite expressions of regret oriented toward preserving social harmony, whereas American influencers favored explicit acknowledgment of responsibility paired with detailed, self-protective explanation. These findings contribute to pragmatic research on digital discourse by demonstrating how apology strategies function simultaneously as face-saving devices and as culturally shaped communicative practices in the era of cancel culture.

Abstract

This study investigates the language styles used by Sabrina Carpenter in her interview with Zane Lowe on the Apple Music YouTube channel and examines how those styles reflect her identity. The study applies a descriptive qualitative approach. Sabrina Carpenter’s utterances in the 53-minute-and-5-second interview were transcribed, identified, coded, and classified using William Labov’s (1972) language-style framework, while Janet Holmes’s (2013) sociolinguistic perspective was used to interpret the relationship between language and identity. The findings show 100 relevant data consisting of 92 casual-style utterances and 8 careful-style utterances. Reading style, word-list style, and minimal-pairs style were not found because the interview did not involve controlled reading or elicitation tasks. Casual style was characterized by spontaneous responses, short utterances, interjections, discourse markers, humor, contractions, emotional expressions, and incomplete structures. Careful style appeared when Carpenter gave more deliberate, coherent, reflective, and interactionally managed responses. The dominance of casual style indicates that Carpenter generally communicates in a relaxed and natural manner. Her linguistic choices construct an identity that is relatable, authentic, expressive, friendly, and socially engaging, while careful style additionally presents her as reflective and attentive to interaction. The study demonstrates that language style functions not only as linguistic variation but also as a resource for identity construction in digital media interviews.

Abstract

Patriarchal structures have long confined women to subordinate roles, and literature offers a space to examine such structures and women's responses to them. This study uses feminist literary criticism, guided by Simone de Beauvoir's feminist existentialist framework, to examine Hannah Martin's position as a woman and how her choices across two parallel life paths reflect her movement within that position, in Taylor Jenkins Reid's Maybe in Another Life (2015), a narrative built around a single decision that splits Hannah's life into two trajectories. The research addresses two questions, the conditions that shape Hannah's position as a woman, and how her choices reflect her movement within that position. The study applies four concepts from Beauvoir's framework, woman as the Other, freedom and choice, transcendence and immanence, and the social construction of feminine identity. The method is descriptive qualitative, with the novel as the primary data source and the researcher as the main instrument for collecting and interpreting narrations, dialogues, and character actions. The results show that before the novel's split, Hannah exists within conditions that position her as the Other, marked by relational dependence, economic instability, and surrendering decisions to fate. Across both paths, she moves toward self-direction and the claiming of her own subjecthood, though neither path concludes with complete freedom.

Abstract

This study examines Georgia Warr's journey toward understanding and accepting her aromantic asexual identity in Alice Oseman's Loveless. The research aims to analyze the stages of Georgia's identity formation and to reveal how heteronormative expectations influence her experiences throughout the process of self-discovery. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method using a literary psychological approach combined with queer theory. The primary data are collected from the novel Loveless, while secondary data are obtained from books, scholarly journals, and previous studies related to asexuality, aromanticism, identity development, and heteronormativity. The data are analyzed through close reading, data classification, interpretation, and contextual analysis. The findings demonstrate that Georgia's identity development occurs through several interconnected stages: identity confusion, self-questioning, denial, realization, coming out, and self-acceptance. Throughout these stages, Georgia struggles with social expectations that equate happiness with romantic and sexual relationships. Her interactions with members of the LGBTQIA+ community gradually help her understand that romantic and sexual attraction are not universal experiences. Ultimately, Georgia recognizes that her identity as an aromantic asexual individual is valid and does not diminish her ability to build meaningful relationships. This study contributes to literary criticism by highlighting the importance of aromantic and asexual representation in contemporary young adult fiction and demonstrating how literature challenges dominant heteronormative assumptions regarding love, intimacy, and personal fulfillment.
