Abstract

The conceptual framework for combining culture and language training proposed by Liddicoat and Scarino (2013) comprising 1) Structural Understandings of Content, 2) Communicative Understanding of Content, 2) Content-Based Language Teaching, 4) Concept-Based Understandings of Content, and 5) Content for Intercultural Language Teaching and Learning is reinterpreted in this paper. It delves into how students' comprehension of the connection between language and culture can be improved via the use of a systematic method for organizing course material. The framework lays the groundwork for successful engagement with both cultural and linguistic components by stressing the methodical presentation of such content. To further emphasize the significance of language forms and their practical use in genuine communication, the authors also present communicative understandings of content. More meaningful language interactions are made possible by this method, which emphasizes the interdependence of cultural knowledge and linguistic abilities. Furthermore, the article delves further into the topic of content-based language training, which uses authentic cultural settings to improve both language learning and cross-cultural competency. It promotes a more in-depth investigation of cultural notions and their influence on language acquisition by integrating concept-based understandings of culture. With an emphasis on helping students become fluent communicators and adept at navigating cultural differences, this article presents the concept of content for intercultural language learning. This paper stresses the need for inclusive pedagogy that welcomes Indonesian EFL students of all backgrounds, encourages the growth of language skills and intercultural understanding, and ultimately equips students to participate actively in communities around the world.

Abstract

This study investigates the intricate relationship between nutritional intake patterns, parenting practices, hygiene habits, and access to health services in influencing the nutritional status of children under five years old, particularly within the context of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia. Recognizing that malnutrition remains a significant health concern, exacerbated by the pandemic's impact on social order and healthcare access, this research underscores the crucial role of maternal behavior and family environment in shaping children's health outcomes. The study draws upon existing literature highlighting the consequences of malnutrition, including stunting, wasting, and increased susceptibility to infectious diseases. Furthermore, it acknowledges the effectiveness of the Positive Deviance/Hearth Specialist approach in addressing malnutrition through community-based solutions. The discussion of research findings from Baregbeg Village, Ciamis Regency in 2021, which indicated a high prevalence of undernutrition (58.1%), reinforces the urgency of comprehensive interventions. The study emphasizes that addressing malnutrition requires a multi-faceted approach involving not only healthcare professionals but also parents, families, community leaders, and the government, particularly in promoting clean and healthy living behaviors (CHLB) as a preventive measure against both malnutrition and COVID-19. The conclusion stresses the importance of disciplined adherence to health protocols and collaborative efforts among all societal elements to combat the pandemic and improve the nutritional well-being of the nation's children.

Abstract

This study investigated the effectiveness of the Field School Livestock Business Management program in enhancing the knowledge and skills of livestock farmers in Tasikmalaya Regency, a region implementing the Upland Areas Project (UPLAND). Employing a quantitative pre- and post-test design, the research assessed the impact of the Field School on participants from Batch 1 (n=25) and Batch 2 (n=25). The curriculum encompasses crucial aspects of livestock management, including feed cultivation, barn management, seed selection, husbandry techniques, and reproduction management, with Class 2 also participating in practical forage crop cultivation. The findings revealed statistically significant improvements in the mean knowledge and skill scores for both classes following the Sekolah Field intervention. Batch 1 demonstrated an increase from a pre-test mean of 69.60 to a post-test mean of 84.40, while Batch 2 demonstrated a more substantial gain from 60.40 to 83.20. Inferential statistical analysis on the normalized gain scores indicated a significantly higher learning efficiency in Batch 2 compared to Batch 1, suggesting that factors such as the practical forage cultivation session may have contributed to enhanced learning outcomes. These results underscore the efficacy of the Field School as an impactful extension methodology for improving livestock farmers' competencies, aligning with the UPLAND project's goals of fostering integrated and sustainable agricultural systems. The study highlights the potential of participatory, hands-on learning approaches in promoting knowledge acquisition and skill development crucial for modern livestock management. Future research should focus on longitudinal assessments of knowledge retention and the actual adoption of sustainable practices, as well as exploring the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the Sekolah Field program in the long term.

Abstract

Ecotourism has emerged as one of the surest approaches to harmonizing biodiversity conservation with rural livelihood enhancement. The Wechiau Community Hippo Sanctuary (WCHS) is touted as the model example of community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) with a myriad of stakeholders; chiefs community members, NGO, government agencies, and other development partners playing vital roles. This study employed Reed et al.’s (2009) stakeholder analysis framework to delineate eco-social, discuss stakeholder roles, and synthesize lessons for improved governance. The study conducted an in-depth interview with 23 purposively sampled participants from six sanctuary communities, including chiefs, members of the sanctuary management board (SMB), tour guides, rangers, and development partners, and undertook a narrative analysis. The findings revealed that primary stakeholders (chiefs and elders, and local community members) serve as custodians of the ecotourism project; the sanctuary management board and sanctuary management committees run the day-to-day operations; while secondary stakeholders comprising NGOs and other development partners make financial and technical commitments to the project. The study revealed notable benefits, including conservation and the provision of alternative livelihoods for the people. Despite these notable achievements, sustainability is threatened by issues such as role ambiguity, unequal benefit-sharing, and donor dependence, even amid noteworthy advancements in conservation and livelihood creation. To develop community-based ecotourism governance, the article concludes that clarity of roles, equitable participation, and capacity building are essential. It also provides insights for replicating similar models in Ghana and across Africa.

Abstract

This study aims to develop an integrative model for smart rural tourism development by leveraging a community-based green economy and local wisdom in the Sukapulang Agrotourism Area, Sukasetia Village, Indonesia. Amidst accelerating digitalization, this research argues that socio-cultural foundations are key determinants for sustainable development. Using a qualitative case study design, data were gathered through in-depth interviews with ten key informants (village officials, Pokdarwis managers, and MSME actors), participant observation, and documentation. Data analysis was conducted through thematic coding, categorizing the dimensions of empowerment, green practices, and cultural values, and was validated through source triangulation. The findings indicate that smart tourism in Sukasetia is driven by the spirit of "Gotong Royong" (mutual cooperation) and an agrarian cultural heritage that serves as an ethical filter for green economy implementation. This study proposes an integrative model in which local wisdom serves as the foundation, community empowerment as the primary driver, and digitalisation as the accelerator. The novelty of this research lies in repositioning the "smart" paradigm from mere technological adoption to a governance approach grounded in cultural sovereignty.

Abstract

This study proposes a conceptual framework for Green STEAM-H Pedagogy, integrating Eco-Mathematical Literacy as an approach to sustainability-oriented education. The framework responds to the growing need for educational models that systematically connect sustainability values, interdisciplinary learning, and analytical competencies in addressing complex environmental challenges. It synthesizes three key dimensions: green pedagogy as a value-oriented foundation, STEAM-H (Science, Technology, Engineering, Agriculture, Mathematics, and Health) as an interdisciplinary structure, and eco-mathematical literacy as a central analytical component. The framework is operationalized through a developmental progression consisting of three stages: eco-awareness, eco-integration, and eco-transformation. These stages represent a structured pathway through which learners develop ecological understanding, integrate knowledge across disciplines, and apply their competencies in sustainability-oriented actions. In addition, a pedagogical model is proposed to translate the framework into classroom practice by aligning instructional strategies, learning activities, and expected outcomes. This study contributes to the literature by offering a coherent and operationalizable model that bridges the gap between sustainability theory and educational practice. The framework highlights the role of eco-mathematical literacy in supporting data-driven reasoning and decision-making within interdisciplinary learning contexts. It also provides implications for curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment in fostering transformative and future-oriented learning.

Abstract

Literacy has increasingly been recognized as a fundamental component of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learning; however, limited research has examined its simultaneous relationship with multiple language competencies, particularly vocabulary mastery, speaking comprehension, and intercultural awareness. Addressing this gap, the present study aims to investigate the extent to which EFL students’ literacy is associated with these three essential competencies and to identify learners’ needs related to literacy development. This study employed a quantitative correlational design complemented by needs analysis. Data were collected from 107 primary students through a set of instruments, including a literacy test, a vocabulary assessment, a speaking comprehension test, and an intercultural awareness questionnaire, as well as a needs analysis survey. The data were analyzed using Spearman rho correlation to determine the strength of relationships among variables. The findings revealed significant positive correlations between literacy and all three competencies. The strongest relationship was found between literacy and vocabulary mastery, followed by moderate correlations with speaking comprehension and intercultural awareness. These results indicate that students with higher literacy levels tend to demonstrate better lexical knowledge, improved ability to comprehend spoken language, and greater awareness of cultural diversity. In conclusion, literacy functions as a foundational competence that supports broader language development and intercultural communication. The study highlights the importance of integrating literacy-based and multimodal instructional practices in EFL classrooms to enhance students’ communicative competence and global awareness.
