Abstract

Nizar Qabbani, a distinguished Arab poet from Syria, is widely recognized for his writing style, which, despite its linguistic simplicity, conveys profound meaning. Owing to this characteristic, his poetic works have garnered considerable scholarly attention within the field of Arabic literary studies. One of his notable poems, Asyhadu Alla Imra’atan Illa Anti, has frequently been examined for its thematic portrayal of love and womanhood. However, previous research has predominantly focused on the poem’s content, with limited attention given to the narrative voice—specifically, the first-person pronoun “I”—through which the poem’s message is articulated. This narrative persona, interpreted as a representation of the male subject, is portrayed as occupying a position of inferiority. This study aims to investigate the depiction of male inferiority within the poem. Employing a qualitative method, the research analyzes the text by collecting words, phrases, and sentences through note-taking techniques. The data are subsequently examined using a semiotic approach and content analysis, informed by Adlerian psychoanalytic theory. The findings suggest that the manifestation of male inferiority in the poem is closely linked to societal expectations imposed on men, particularly within the framework of patriarchal cultural structures.

Abstract

This study examines the increasing institutional use of Arabic in Indonesian Islamic higher education and its role beyond administrative regulation. Although Arabic is commonly regarded as a marker of religious authority, its function in shaping students’ identities within institutional contexts has received limited scholarly attention. This study aims to analyze how Arabic language practices at Ma’had Al-Jami‘ah, Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, contribute to the construction of students’ religious–academic identities. Using a descriptive qualitative approach with interpretative analysis within the framework of identity linguistics, this study investigates institutional discourse, everyday linguistic interactions, and symbolic terminology employed in the ma’had environment. Data were collected through non-participatory observation, documentation, and field notes, and analyzed by identifying identity-related linguistic patterns in official announcements, instructional discourse, and daily communication. The findings indicate that institutionalized Arabic terms such as murabbi, ta‘lim, and halaqah function not only as administrative labels but also as linguistic markers that shape normative roles and value orientations within the ma’had structure. At the same time, differences between institutional discourse and students’ interpretations suggest that identity formation occurs through continuous negotiation rather than one-directional institutional control. Thus, Arabic operates both as a medium for transmitting institutional values and as a space in which religious–academic identity is dynamically constructed.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the importance of a comprehensive linguistic analysis of classical Arabic literary works to uncover their aesthetic and intellectual dimensions. The poem As-Shamtu by Imam Asy-Syafi‘i holds significant moral and rhetorical value, yet it has rarely been examined through a multi-level linguistic framework. This research aims to analyze the poem through five linguistic levels: phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and stylistics. This study employs a qualitative method with a descriptive analytical approach based on library research. The data consist of the text of As-Shamtu, collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using content analysis, including identification, classification, interpretation, and conclusion drawing according to the five levels of analysis. The findings reveal that, phonologically, the poem employs baḥr tawil with taf’ilah patterns that undergo zihaf and ʿillah, along with a consistent rhyme scheme that produces a harmonious rhythm. Morphologically, the dominance of fiʿl madhi, mashdar, and ism faʿil strengthens the density of meaning. Syntactically, the combination of verbal and nominal sentences creates a cohesive structure. Semantically and stylistically, “silence” is constructed as a symbol of wisdom through devices such as istiʿarah, tashbih baligh, kinayah, tafdil, and tauriyah, affirming the poem’s contemplative and social values.

Abstract

Gender inequality that places women in subordinate positions within patriarchal systems has been widely criticized in feminist studies. In literary works, criticism of such systems is often represented through female characters who not only perform social roles but also engage in resistance and establish power within society. The novel Daulah Sayyidat Fi Mamlakah Nisa by Niqula Haddad portrays a society led by women as a critique of male domination. However, the dynamics of women’s roles, resistance, and power represented in the novel still require more comprehensive scholarly examination. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the dynamics of women's roles, the forms of women's resistance to patriarchal domination, and the construction of women's power from a feminist perspective in the novel. This research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a feminist literary criticism approach. The data consist of words, phrases, sentences, and dialogues that represent women's roles, resistance, and power, collected through reading and note-taking techniques and analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that women are depicted as having strategic roles as state leaders, political decision makers, and drivers of education and culture. Furthermore, women resist male domination and establish new structures of power that influence gender relations within society.

Abstract

Literature has become an important tool for expressing and validating ideas about the future of the country as Saudi Arabia increases its cultural and symbolic commitment in the Neom megaproject. This article analyzes how award-winning poems from a Neom-themed poetry competition held by Nadi Tabuk Adabi function both as aesthetic representations of the Neom project and as instruments of ideological conditioning in contemporary Saudi Arabia. Employing a qualitative descriptive method, this study draws on Alan Swingewood’s sociology of literature to examine poetry as a social product shaped by institutional and political contexts. Hermeneutic textual analysis is applied to three winning poems, focusing on diction, metaphor, symbolism, and narrative structure, while situating these elements within their socio-political environment. The findings show that Neom is consistently represented as a utopian, transformative, and inevitable future through futuristic imagery. Beyond textual representation, the poetry competition itself operates as a cultural institution that conditions meaning production through prestige, recognition, and symbolic legitimacy rather than coercion. This research contributes to Arabic literary studies by demonstrating the continued political function of poetry in contemporary state-sponsored cultural practices and by framing modern Arabic poetry as a site of ideological negotiation rather than purely aesthetic expression.

Abstract

Emotional intelligence plays a crucial role in shaping emotional development and how a person adapts, both in personal contexts and when interacting in social environments. This study focuses on the emotional intelligence of the character Ghoma in the Az-Za’im drama by Musthafa Mahmoud and using Daniel Goleman’s theory of emotional intelligence. The purpose of this study is to reveal the forms of self-awareness, self-regulation, motivation, empathy, and social skills exhibited by the character Ghoma. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, utilizing data in the form of dialogues or sentences that demonstrate the character Ghoma’s emotional intelligence. The results indicate that the character Ghoma possesses strong and stable emotional intelligence. He exhibits five indicators of self-awareness, five indicators of self-regulation, four indicators of motivation, three indicators of empathy and three indicators of social skills. Ghoma is depicted as capable of recognizing his own emotions, restraining aggressive impulses, managing political tensions, and making strategic decisions that involve moral and collective considerations. Furthermore, he is able to convert emotions into the energy of struggle and maintain social relationships with fellow comrades through persuasive communication. The study’s conclusion indicates that Ghoma’s emotional intelligence serves as the primary foundation of his leadership in confronting colonial conflict and psychological pressure. This research also demonstrates that drama is not merely a representation of social conflict but also a space for the formation of character and the complex emotional dynamics of a people’s leader.

Abstract

The id, ego, and superego are understood as distinct psychic elements that interact dynamically in shaping human personality. The fundamental theory of this personality structure was proposed by the renowned psychoanalyst, Sigmund Freud. This article examines the application of these concepts to the character Ali in Ghassan Kanafani's short story Al-Ufuqu Wara’a Al-Bawabah. This work is part of the anthology Ardhul Burtuqal Al-Hazin, which chronicles the suffering of the Palestinian people following the 1948 Nakba, with a focus on the psychological trauma of youth in exile. The main focus of this study is to analyze how the id, ego, and superego influence Ali's behavior as he is trapped between profound grief over the death of his sister Dalal and the demands of survival amid extreme social realities. This study employs a qualitative method with a literary psychology approach based on Freud's psychoanalytic framework. The findings conclude that Ali exhibits a dominant id, particularly in his impulsive pursuit of instant relief and avoidance of emotional wounds. Meanwhile, Ali's ego functions as a mediator, forming self-defense mechanisms through a decade-long lie to preserve his inner stability. However, this ego appears paralyzed when he fails to confront physical reality upon meeting his mother. On the other hand, Ali's superego exerts intense moral pressure, manifested in deep regret and self-labeling as a "coward" due to the burden of his prolonged deception.

Abstract

The poem Lam Yahtalim is one of the six stanza poems contained in the book Maraaqi al-'Ubudiyyah by Sheikh Nawawi al-Bantani. In its composition, this poem uses a theory that regulates the structure of the formation of Arabic poetry called the science of ‘arudh and qawafi. This study focuses on the analysis of the verses of Lam Yahtalim’s poetry using both theories such as bahr, zihaf, ‘illat, qawafi letters and qawafi harakat. This study aims to describe the constituent elements in the form of tables and descriptions so that these elements can be easily identified. This study uses a descriptive-analytical research type by describing the data obtained and then analyzing it. The results of this study are that the poem Lam Yahtalim is composed using bahr basith with the presence of zihaf khabn in each ‘arudh and dharab without any ‘illat. From the qawafi review, all the verses of this poem have uniqueness with the same rawi muthlaq letters in the form of the letter nun and the washal letters using the letter ya', likewise the qafiyah harakat in this poem also has uniqueness with the same qafiyah harakat in each verse, namely the majra' harakat with the kasrah of the letter nun.

Abstract

This study examines the psychological profile of M. Faisol Fatawi, the author of Qasidah An-Nahdliyyah, using Gordon Allport’s personality theory, with a particular focus on how psychological dimensions are reflected in literary production. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzes narrative data through the framework of traits, habits, and attitudes. The findings reveal that the author’s dominant traits consistency, diligence, and social awareness are systematically manifested in his writing practices and thematic choices. His habits of drawing inspiration from meaningful moments and maintaining humility, along with his reflective and service-oriented attitudes, significantly shape the construction of the text. This study offers a novel contribution by demonstrating the integration of Allport’s psychological framework into the analysis of contemporary Islamic literary works, highlighting how individual personality structures can function as a driving force in ideological and cultural expression. The Qasidah An-Nahdliyyah thus emerges not only as a literary product but also as a medium for articulating the author’s devotion to Nahdlatul Ulama and his intention to inspire broader social engagement.
