Abstract

Malondialdehyde (MDA) is the end product of lipid peroxidation and a marker of free radicals. Honey is a safe sweetener proven to lower blood glucose level and contains flavonoids, vitamin A, C, E as a source of antioxidant that can capture free radicals. This study aims to determine the effect of honey on plasma MDA level ionalloxan-induced hyperglycemicrats. This was an experimental study with post-test only control group design conducted for 25 days using 18 white male Wistar rats divided into 3 groups randomly. A negative control group, group B were given honey orally at the dose of 0.54 ml/mice/day, and group C were given honey orally at the of dose 0.9 ml/head/day. Each group consisted of 6 rats. Blood plasma MDA was evaluated by Thiobarbituric Acid Reactive Substance (TBARS) test assay. One way ANOVA analysis test followed post hoc were applied for data analysis. The results showed that mean levels of MDA in group A, B, and C were 6.02 mmol/l ± 0.36, 4.37 mmol/± 0.30, and 1.12 mmol/l ± 0.11 respectively. Bivariate analysis One way ANOVA test showed a significant difference (p<0,05). Post hoc tests showed a significant differences between the study groups (p<0,05). It can be concluded that honey had an effect on the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the blood plasma of alloxan-induced hyperglycemic rats.

Abstract

Introduction: Just like any other test, anatomical identification test can also cause high stress. Classical music intervention has proven effective in mitigating stress level in clinical context. However, whether or not it is effective as well to reduce stress level during anatomical identification test remains unknown. Objective: discovering whether listening to classical music can alleviate stress level in students when attending anatomical identification examination. Methods: Experimental research with post-test only control group design, involving 148 students as its sample obtained using proportionate stratified random sampling. The sample is divided into 2 groups: the group who listen to classical music and the one who did not listen to classical music. The stress level was measured using Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). The data are analyzed using Chi Square test. Results: Students who do not listen to classical music are mostly experiencing moderate (33 students or 22.29%), mild (29 students or 19.59%) and severe (12 students or 8.1%) stresses. On the other hand, students who listen to classical music are mostly experiencing mild (44 students or 29.72%), moderate (29 students 19.59%) and severe (1 student or 0.67%) stresses. The Chi Square test shows significant difference,  p= 0.002.Conclusion: Listening to classical music makes students have lower stress level when attending anatomical identification test.

Abstract

Free radicals are formed in the body as a by-product of an aerobic respiration. During pregnancy, the increase in free radicals potentially causes structural and functional damages to fetus. Tempeh is originally from Indonesia having various nutrition inclding vitamin, mineral and isoflaphon serving as antioxidhant having potential to reduce and improve DNA damage. This study was aimed to investigate the effect of tempeh flour suplementation during pregnancy on Glutathione peroxides (GPx) and Malondetaldehyde (MDA) as an indicator of lipid peroxide in the offspings. In this experimental study, 20 pregnant female wistar rats were devided into four groups of 5 rats each to receive one of the following treatment :10 g standard diet/rat/d, 10 g/rat/d of standard diet and tempeh flour 1. g//d, 10 g/d of standard diet and tempeh flour 2g/d, standard diet of 10 g/d and 1g of egg/d. And aquades ad libitum. During nursing period (until 1 month) the rats were fed 10 g/100gBB/d normal diet, after weining they were supplemented with a diet of high in saturated fat for 4 weeks for each group. The Mean of litter size was 1: 9.33 with mean of BW 4.93 g, group II:6.17 with BW of 5.32, group III: 5.17 with BW of 5.33, group IV: 6.33 with BW: 5.01. Means of GPx for the four groups were 22.38 U/mg, 28.94 U/mg, 38.59 U/mg, 16.98 U/mg respectively. The mean of MDA for the four groups were 11.07 nmol/mg, 9.89 nmol/mg, 10.06 nmol/mg and 12.25 nmol/mg respectively. There was a significant difference in GPx and MDA (p=0.00). In conclusion tempeh flour had an effect on the level of GPx and MDA in rats with limited diet during pregnancy.

Abstract

INTRODUCTION: ROS is the most common cause of male infertility. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a compound which produces ROS and decreases FSH and LH levels. Continuous Multistage Countercurrent Extraction (CMCE) propolis extract as an antioxidant is evidently capable of reducing ROS concentration.OBJECTIVE: this research aims at evaluating the effect of CMCE propolis extract administration on Leydig cells and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality of MSG-induced male wistar rats.METHODS: employing the Post Test Only Control Group Design, 18 rats were divided into 3 groups: control group, treated only with MSG (MS-G), and treatment groups, respectively treated with CMCE propolis extract at doses 8.3mg/day (CM8-G) and 10.8mg/day (CM10-G). CMCE propolis extract was given orally for 21 days. At the end of treatment, sperm and testis were taken to evaluate the Leydig cells and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality. The sperm obtained from epididymis was analyzed using the WHO standards, while Leydig cells and Sertoli cells were counted from preparation using the HE stain method.RESULTS: the Post Hoc analysis result shows that the Leydig and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality of CM8-G and CM10-G are significantly higher than those of MS-G, p<0.05. The Leydig cells and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality of CM10-G are significantly higher than those of CM8-G, p><0.05. CONCLUSION: CMCE propolis extract administration evidently increases the Leydig cells and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality from the perspective of the count, motility and morphology of spermatozoa of MSG-induced male wistar rats.><0.05CONCLUSION: CMCE propolis extract administration evidently increases the Leydig cells and Sertoli cells counts and sperm quality from the perspective of the count, motility and morphology of spermatozoa of MSG-induced male wistar rats.

Abstract

Background: The cardiovascular derangements of severe sepsis in human include arteriolar, venular dilation, capillary leak, and immunomodulatory response. Intravascular volume replacement during resuscitation most frequently converts the circulation to a high-out put hypotensive state. We hypothesized that patients with severe sepsis had any predicting factors to survive than those who do not.Design and Method: Randomized Clinical Trials were conducted of 110 patients suffered from severe sepsis in ICU/HCU. Admission APACHE II, SOFA scores, IFN- , IL-12, TNF-á, and fluid balance were computed from the extracted data. Patients allowed to severe sepsis treatment according with the International Consensus Committee. Summary estimates using both the Mantel-Haenszel test and precision based approaches were computed for statistical analysis.Result: Of 110 patients ranged in age from 46 to 71 years with a mean (± SE) age of 63.45 ± 3.97 years. The mean admission APACHE II score was 25.96 ± 3.65; and the day 1 SOFA score was 9.57 ± 1.24. Twenty one patients did not survive, Non-survival had higher mean APACHE II than survivals (29.85 vs 20.46), respectively (p < 0.01). Higher first day IFN- , IL-12, TNF-á, and SOFA scores (p< 0.01). Whereas 26 patients who achieved a negative fluid balance of > 500 mL on > of the first 3 days of treatment survived (RR 5.0; 95% CI : 2.3 to 10.7, p < 0.0001).Conclusion: These results suggest that at least 1 day of negative fluid balance (<-500mL), IFN- , IL-12, and TNF-á may be a good independent predictors of survival in patients with severe sepsis. These findings suggest the hypothesis that four independent predictors of severe sepsis portend a good prognosis for a larger prospective study (Sains Medika, 4(1):13-22).

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Paracetamol may cause apoptosis in the renal tubules. Moringa leaf (Moringa oleifera. Lam) has been shown to have antioxidant effects due to its f lavonoids. In addition, f lavonoids also have biological effects to modulate the signal-transduction pathway.OBJECTIVE: to investigate the effect of Moringa oleifera Lam extract on Bcl-2 and Bax expression on paracetamol-induced renal tubular injury.METHODS: in this post-test only control group design study, 24 rats were divided into 4 groups: AqC-G (aquades), EtC-G (70% ethanol), MoL1-Gand MoL2-G (moringa leaf extract at the dose of 1.075 g/Kg BW and 2.150 g/Kg BW respectively). Expression of Bcl2 and Bax was determined using immunohistochemical staining. The data on the number of Bcl2 and Bax expressions tested with One Way Anova followed by the Post Hoc LSD test.RESULTS: Post Hoc LSD test showed that the expression of Bcl-2 in the experimental groups ((MoL1-G (9.1) and MoL2-G (13,683)) was significantly higher compared to that of controls (p<0.001). Bax expression in the experimental groups (MoL1-G (6,85) and MoL2-G (2,633)) was significantly lower compared to that of controls, p <0.001.CONCLUSION: The administration of Moringa leaf extract at the dose of 1,075 and 2,150 increases Bcl-2 expression and decreases Bax expression in paracetamol-induced renal tubular injury.
