Abstract

Background: Diarrhea remains one of the environment-related diseases that poses a public health problem, particularly among elementary school-aged children. A lack of knowledge and awareness regarding diarrhea prevention can increase the risk of diarrhea in children. One preventive measure that can be taken is providing health education using innovative media such as flashcard games. Purpose: to determine the effect of flashcard games on elementary school students’ knowledge and attitudes toward diarrhea prevention. Method: This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental design using a non-equivalent control group. The sample consisted of 102 respondents, comprising an experimental group and a control group, selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using pre-test and post-test questionnaires and analyzed using the Paired T-test, Wilcoxon test, and Mann-Whitney U test. Result: The results of the study indicate that there was a significant difference in knowledge levels between before and after the intervention in the experimental group (p < 0.001). There was also a significant difference in attitudes between before and after the intervention (p < 0.001). Additionally, there was a significant difference in the change in knowledge between the experimental and control groups (p < 0.001) and a significant difference in the change in attitudes between the experimental and control groups (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Flashcard games have an impact on improving elementary school students’ knowledge and attitudes toward diarrhea prevention. Suggestion: Schools are encouraged to utilize innovative educational tools, such as flashcard games, in their health education programs.Health workers are encouraged to collaborate with schools in implementing health promotion initiatives focused on preventing diarrhea.

Abstract

Background: Preterm birth (PTB), defined as delivery before 37 weeks of gestation, remains a major global health problem contributing to neonatal morbidity and mortality. Behavioral and psychosocial factors are increasingly recognized as important contributors to PTB incidence. Purpose: To identify and synthesize evidence regarding behavioral and psychosocial risk factors associated with preterm birth. Method: This study used a systematic review design based on PRISMA guidelines. Literature searches were conducted through PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar using keywords related to preterm birth, behavioral factors, and psychosocial factors. Selected studies were analyzed qualitatively according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Five studies met the eligibility criteria. Maternal stress and low health control beliefs were associated with an increased likelihood of preterm birth in some studies. Evidence regarding smoking, alcohol consumption, diet, physical activity, depression, and psychological distress was limited or inconsistent across the included studies. Conclusion: Behavioral and psychosocial factors contribute to PTB risk. Comprehensive prenatal care should integrate psychosocial screening and behavioral assessment to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Hospitalization not only affects children's physical condition but also influences their spiritual aspects. School-age children are still in the developmental stage of spirituality, so illness experiences may shape how they understand and practice spirituality. Purpose: To explore perceived changes in the spirituality of a school-age child before and during hospitalization. Method: This qualitative case study involved one 10-year-old hospitalized child and the child’s mother. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and field notes and analyzed using thematic analysis. Results: The findings showed changes in children's spirituality during hospitalization. Before illness, spiritual activities were routine-based and dependent on parental guidance. During hospitalization, there was an increase in spiritual awareness, indicated by independent prayer and hope for recovery. Children also began to perceive illness as a test. However, physical limitations hindered the performance of religious practices, leading children to express spirituality mainly through prayer. Conclusion: Hospitalization contributes to changes in children's spirituality, particularly in increasing spiritual awareness and meaning-making of illness. Therefore, spiritual care should be integrated into holistic nursing care for pediatric patients.

Abstract

Background: Shoulder dystocia is a potentially life-threatening obstetric complication for the mother and neonate, but its management is often suboptimal due to limited competence of midwifery personnel in emergency situations. Purpose: to analyze the management patterns of shoulder dystocia based on a systematic literature review and evaluate the effectiveness of developing 3D animated video-based learning media using the ADDIE model in improving midwifery competency. Method: A quantitative approach with a systematic literature study design was used, sourced from five selected scientific journals containing case data, clinical interventions, and development of midwifery learning media. Results: The analysis results showed that the McRoberts maneuver was the primary management technique with a success rate of 42–58%, followed by suprapubic pressure (34-42%) as an additional intervention. The incidence of shoulder dystocia was recorded to be higher in deliveries with a history of macrosomia, gestational diabetes, and vaginal delivery in primigravida adolescents. The implementation of 3D animated video-based learning media using the ADDIE model has been shown to significantly improve midwifery students' competency scores (p < 0.001), with an average increase of 23.4 points from pretest to posttest. Conclusion: The novelty of this study lies in the integration of clinical analysis of shoulder dystocia with a standardized learning media development strategy, a practice never before comprehensively implemented in the context of midwifery education in Indonesia. The implications of this study are relevant for developing a competency-based curriculum and improving the preparedness of midwifery personnel in facing obstetric emergencies.
