Abstract

Background: Anxiety in pregnant women is a common maternal mental health issue, particularly during the third trimester. This condition can negatively impact both maternal and fetal health, leading to sleep disturbances, elevated blood pressure, preterm labor, and postpartum depression. One widely used non-pharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety in pregnant women is prenatal yoga. Purpose: to analyze the effectiveness of prenatal yoga in reducing anxiety levels among pregnant women in primary healthcare settings. Method: This study employed a literature review using a narrative approach. Articles were electronically searched via the Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect databases. Inclusion criteria included research articles published between 2021 and 2026, written in Indonesian or English, available in full text. The article selection process utilized the PRISMA flow diagram, resulting in 8 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. Results: The findings indicate that all articles state prenatal yoga is effective in reducing anxiety levels in pregnant women, particularly during the third trimester. The mechanism by which prenatal yoga reduces anxiety is related to stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system, a decrease in cortisol levels, and an increase in endorphins and serotonin, which play a role in creating a sense of comfort and calm. Conclusion: Prenatal yoga is an effective, safe, and easily implementable nonpharmacological intervention in primary healthcare to help reduce anxiety levels in pregnant women. Prenatal yoga can be recommended as part of integrated antenatal care to support maternal mental health and improve the quality of life for pregnant women

Abstract

Background: Leg swelling (edema) is a common complaint among third-trimester pregnant women due to fluid retention and impaired venous return. Prenatal exercise is a safe nonpharmacological intervention that can help reduce leg edema. Purpose: To determine the effectiveness of prenatal exercise on leg swelling in third-trimester pregnant women based on previous research findings. Method: This study employed a literature review method, with articles retrieved from the PubMed, Google Scholar, and ScienceDirect databases from 2021 to 2026. Inclusion criteria included original research articles on prenatal exercise or physical activity regarding leg edema in third-trimester pregnant women. Article selection followed the PRISMA flowchart, resulting in 9 eligible articles. Results: The review findings indicate that prenatal exercise is effective in reducing leg swelling in third-trimester pregnant women. Prenatal exercise helps improve blood circulation, enhance venous return, improve vascular function, and reduce fluid retention in the lower extremities. Additionally, prenatal exercise improves physical comfort and quality of life for pregnant women. Conclusion: Prenatal exercise is effective as a nonpharmacological intervention to reduce leg edema in third-trimester pregnant women and can be recommended in antenatal care.

Abstract

Background: One of the non-pharmacological effort to increase hemoglobin (Hb) levels is by consuming fruits that contain iron and nutrients that support red blood cell formation. Dragon fruit contains iron, vitamin C, and antioxidants, while Ambon bananas contain iron, vitamin B6, vitamin C, and folic acid. Purpose: to determine the effect of dragon fruit juice and Ambon banana juice on hemoglobin levels among adolescent girls. Method: The research method used was a descriptive case study involving four respondents, consisting of two respondents in the dragon fruit juice group and two respondents in the Ambon banana juice group, conducted over 14 days. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention. Results: The results showed that the dragon fruit juice group experienced an average increase in Hb levels of 1.95 g/dL, while the Ambon banana juice group experienced an average increase of 1.4 g/dL. Conclusion: both dragon fruit juice and Ambon banana juice had an effect on increasing Hb levels in adolescent girls, and dragon fruit juice was more effective than Ambon banana juice in improving Hb levels. Suggestion: Both dragon fruit juice and Ambon banana juice can help improve Hb levels; however, dragon fruit juice is more effective and may be used as an alternative non-pharmacological intervention to help prevent and manage anemia in adolescent girls.

Abstract

Background: Breast engorgement is a common problem among postpartum mothers, characterized by breast tension, pain, and swelling due to obstructed milk flow. This condition can interfere with breastfeeding and may lead to complications if not properly managed. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of aloe vera (Aloe vera) and cabbage leaf (Brassica oleracea) compresses on reducing the breast engorgement scale among postpartum mothers. Method: This study used a case study design with a Study Case Literature Review (SCLR) approach. The sample consisted of 6 postpartum mothers on days 3-7 experiencing breast engorgement, divided into two groups: the aloe vera compress group (3 respondents) and the cold cabbage leaf compress group (3 respondents). The intervention was carried out for 4 days, twice daily for 30 minutes. Breast engorgement was measured using the Six Point Engorgement Scale (SPES) over three visits. Results: The results showed that the aloe vera group experienced a decrease in the average breast engorgement scale from 5.00 to 1.33, with an average reduction of 3.66, while the cold cabbage leaf group showed a decrease from 5.00 to 1.00, with an average reduction of 4.00. Conclusion: Both interventions were effective in reducing breast engorgement; however, cold cabbage leaf compresses demonstrated higher effectiveness than aloe vera. Suggestion: It can be concluded that cold cabbage leaf and aloe vera compresses may be used as safe and simple non-pharmacological therapies for managing breast engorgement in postpartum mothers.
