Abstract

This study aims to analyze the difficulties in learning fraction arithmetic operations among fourth-grade elementary school students. The subjects of this study were three representative students from Grade IV at SD Negeri 060858, Medan Tembung District. The results showed that the overall level of students’ learning difficulties reached 85%, both in understanding the material concepts and in carrying out the operational procedures. The factors contributing to these difficulties include internal and external factors. It is expected that teachers, in teaching fraction arithmetic operations, place greater emphasis on students’ mastery of concepts, principles, and operations. Thus, learning difficulties in fraction arithmetic can be minimized.

Abstract

This study explores cross-cultural ethnomathematical practices embedded in cultural phenomena across Southeast Asia, with a focus on Indonesia and Thailand. The primary objective is to identify and analyze mathematical practices inherent in various cultural aspects, including batik motifs, traditional house architecture, and traditional games in Indonesia, as well as temple architecture, woodcarving, and traditional dance in Thailand. This study employs a case-study approach, with data collected through participant observation, in-depth interviews, and document analysis. The findings indicate that mathematical practices such as geometry, proportion, symmetry, and patterns are consistently found in cultural artifacts and activities. The research results indicate that contextual learning incorporating ethnomathematics influences problem-solving abilities based on students’ levels of thinking. Additionally, this study provides insights into the interrelation between cultural values and mathematical symbolism. Cross-cultural analysis revealed common themes and significant differences in the application of mathematics, influenced by historical, religious, and environmental factors. The implications of this research include a deeper understanding of how culture shapes mathematical practices and how ethnomathematics can be integrated into education to enhance culturally relevant mathematics learning and improve students’ numeracy skills

Abstract

Numeracy skills are essential competencies of the 21st century that play an important role in supporting the achievement of quality education as stated in the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 4. However, the results of the Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) show that the numeracy skills of elementary school students in Indonesia are still relatively low, which is caused by mathematics learning that tends to be abstract and teacher-centered. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach based on AKM questions in improving students' numeracy skills. The study used a quantitative method with a quasi-experimental design of one group pretest-posttest. The subjects were students of Elementary School X in Magetan Regency. The instrument used was a validated AKM-based numeracy test, while data analysis was carried out through paired sample t-test statistical tests and N-gain calculations. The results showed that the average student score increased from 57.9 in the pretest to 75.6 in the posttest, with a significance value of 0.000 (<0.05) indicating a significant increase. The N-gain value of 0.42 is in the moderate category, indicating that this approach is quite effective. This finding implies that integrating RME and AKM questions can be an innovative strategy for improving student numeracy while supporting the achievement of SDG 4.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the level of Generative AI usage in assisting junior high school students in solving mathematics problems in Magetan Regency. The research employed a descriptive quantitative approach with a snowball sampling technique. Data were collected through an online questionnaire using Google Forms with a Likert scale. The participants consisted of 120 students from various grade levels. The results indicate that the level of Generative AI usage falls within the moderate to high category, with most students using it primarily to obtain quick answers. Some students also utilize AI to understand problem-solving steps and mathematical concepts. Students’ perceptions of Generative AI are generally positive, particularly in terms of time efficiency and ease of learning. However, several challenges were identified, including dependency on AI, potential inaccuracies in responses, and limited internet access. These findings suggest that Generative AI has significant potential as a learning support tool, but its use needs to be guided to promote conceptual understanding and critical thinking skills. Therefore, the role of teachers and appropriate educational policies is essential in effectively integrating this technology into mathematics learning.

Abstract

Students’ low numeracy literacy skills in fractions are caused by teaching methods that remain focused on procedures and rote memorization without linking mathematical concepts to real-life contexts; therefore, innovative teaching materials are needed to support meaningful understanding. This study aims to analyze the needs and design numeracy-based mathematics teaching materials on fractions for seventh-grade junior high school students. This study uses a conceptual design approach with the Research and Development (R&D) method, limited to the needs analysis and product design stages. Data were obtained through a review of relevant literature on numeracy literacy, instructional materials, and fraction learning, and were analyzed using qualitative descriptive techniques. The results indicate that the instructional materials were designed as modules with a systematic structure, including concept maps, context-based content presentation, learning activities, student worksheets, numeracy literacy-based practice problems, reflections, and evaluations. The integration of real-life contexts into the modules enables students to understand fraction concepts in a more practical and meaningful way. Thus, these numeracy-based teaching materials have the potential to serve as an alternative in supporting more contextual and active mathematics learning, while promoting improvements in students’ numeracy skills.

Abstract

This study examines the impact of origami-based learning on students’ conceptual understanding of deriving quadrilateral area formulas and explores their perceptions of this instructional approach. Employing a mixed-methods design, the research involved 18 tenth-grade students in Medan, Indonesia. Quantitative data were collected through pretest and posttest assessments and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test and N-Gain to determine learning improvement. Qualitative data were obtained through semi-structured interviews and analyzed thematically to capture students’ experiences and perspectives. The findings reveal a statistically significant increase in students’ conceptual understanding (Z = -3.724, p < 0.001), supported by a medium N-Gain score of 0.62 and a large effect size (r = 0.88). Students reported that origami activities enhanced their ability to visualize geometric transformations and facilitated deeper comprehension of formula derivation. However, some students encountered minor technical difficulties during the folding process. Overall, data triangulation confirms that origami-based learning is an effective, engaging, and meaningful alternative to traditional memorization-based geometry instruction.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the effect of using bead media on students’ understanding of place value concepts in mathematics learning for second-grade elementary school students. The research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a pretest-posttest control group design. The population consisted of all second-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Syamtalira Bayu, totaling 45 students, divided into an experimental group and a control group. Data were collected through pretest and posttest instruments designed to measure students’ conceptual understanding. The results showed that the average posttest score of the experimental group was higher than that of the control group, with a more significant improvement in learning outcomes. Statistical analysis using a paired samples t-test indicated a significant difference between pretest and posttest results. Therefore, the use of bead media is proven to be effective in improving students’ understanding of place value concepts in elementary mathematics learning.

Abstract

This study examines students’ computational thinking in solving ratio and proportion problems, focusing on decomposition, pattern recognition, abstraction, and algorithm. A qualitative approach was employed involving purposively selected junior high school students. Data were obtained from written tests and interviews, and analyzed through stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results indicate variations in students’ abilities across all aspects. In decomposition, most students were able to determine known and required information correctly. In pattern recognition, students generally distinguished direct and inverse proportions, although some errors remained. However, difficulties were still palpable in abstraction, particularly in transforming problems into mathematical models, including unit conversions and relationships between variables. In terms of algorithmic thinking, some students were able to organize solution steps systematically, while others were not consistent yet. Overall, decomposition emerged as the most dominant aspect, whereas abstraction was the weakest. These findings suggest the need for learning activities that emphasize mathematical modeling to improve students’ computational thinking skills.

Abstract

This study aims to develop TAPENA media (Equivalent Fraction Table) based on the 4D model to improve the understanding of fraction concepts among fourth-grade students at SDN 1 Made Lamongan. The research employed the Research and Development (R&D) method using the 4D model (Define, Design, Develop, Disseminate). The research subjects were 28 fourth-grade students. Data were collected through observations, tests, and questionnaires. The results showed that after material explanation without media, only 5 students (17.86%) understood the concept, whereas after using TAPENA media, all 28 students (100%) understood the concept of equivalent fractions. TAPENA media presents a table that makes it easier for students to see the relationship between fractions visually. The media validity from material experts reached 86.5% (very valid), and from media experts 88.2% (very valid). The practicality test by teachers obtained 90.5%, and by students 94.8%. These findings prove that TAPENA media is valid, practical, and effective in improving the understanding of fraction concepts. The implication is that TAPENA media can be used as an innovation in mathematics learning in elementary schools. It is recommended that teachers integrate TAPENA into learning activities to motivate students.

Abstract

The low level of conceptual understanding in social arithmetic material at SMP Muhammadiyah 26 jarai serves as the background for this study, which aims to determine the effect of the profit-opoly game media. This study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method and a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The participant involved students from class VII.A as the experimental group  and class VII.C as the control group. The data were collected through test instrument that had been verified for validity. The findings of this study indicated that the average posttest score of the experimental class was 73.43, with an average conceptual understanding percentage of 77,13%, while the control class only reached an  average score of 53.11 with a average conceptual understanding percentage of 58.77%. Based on the Independent Sample t-Test result, it was found that the equal variances assumed had a sig.(2-tailed) value 0,000 < 0.05, or it could also be seen from the value of  = 3.998 > = 1.673. Therefore,it can be concluded that  was rejected and  was accepted, meaning that there was an effect of using the profit-opoly game media on student’s conceptual understanding in social arithmetic material.
