Abstract

Using Naomi Wolf's idea of power feminism, this study uses a descriptive qualitative methodology. The study centers on a female character's quest for domination in the face of men's powerful predominance. The study's focus is Sweet Avocadoes' English-language digital novel The Alpha's Betrayal in 99 Days, which was released on the iReader platform. This reading and writing app distributes over 600,000 titles to over 70 million active readers in more than 150 countries, including Malaysia and Indonesia.  The purpose of this study is to reveal the forms and functions of power represented through the main female character, Shayna Anderson. The findings indicate that female power in the novel is portrayed through personal charm, physical strength, resilience, and decisiveness. These attributes enable the protagonist to dominate male characters and negotiate an equal gender position. Thus, the novel emphasizes that women can claim authority in patriarchal social relations through a combination of charisma, strength, and courage. In this study, the author also examines the perspective of women in Islamic teachings as a point of comparison. In addition to challenging the presumption that gender equality is associated with patriarchal culture, this discussion attempts to investigate how the idea is positioned inside the Islamic faith. The writer aims to show that through the teachings of the Qur'an, Islam promotes women's rights and equality with men in several spheres of life, in addition to acknowledging their existence. As a result, this section emphasizes the significance of feminist principles found in Qur'anic texts as a basis for creating a more equitable and proportionate understanding of women's roles in Islam. Abstract

Functional typology focuses on clause structure and argument relations as they contribute to meaning. The purpose of this research is to characterize the Minangkabau language's grammatical relationships and semantic roles of subjects and objects. The study uses a literature-based methodology and a qualitative descriptive method. The data were taken from Minangkabau folktales and consists of 80 basic clauses. In order to ascertain syntactic behavior, the analysis employs subjecthood tests (raising, reflexive control, relativization, and quantifier float) in addition to identifying grammatical relations and semantic roles. The results show that Minangkabau subjects continuously hold the greatest syntactic position, regardless of whether they behave as agents or non-agents. Subjects can appear before the predicate, influence reflexive noun phrases, and be relativized. However, objects are different from subjects. Direct objects function as dative or benefactive semantically, whilst indirect objects function as patient. Grammatical relations and semantic roles interact hierarchically and functionally in phrase structure, as demonstrated by Minangkabau's typological nominative–accusative alignment with a simple S–V–O word order.

Abstract

There has been a continuous debate among university lecturers in Indonesia regarding the proper literary theory integrated into literature subjects for undergraduate English education majors. The lecturers argue that literary theory, distinguished by its theoretical density and highly specialized jargon, is immensely daunting for undergraduate students and thus more appropriately taught at the graduate level of literary studies. As a result, the conventional literary classroom system should be shifted into the classroom with an ability to understand, to overcome the problems, and to implement the knowledge into the skills that are useful for contributing to students' success in the current condition. Therefore, implementing PBL in integrating literary theory into teaching English literature is essential in order to address the limitations outlined earlier. A qualitative research approach was employed in this study, utilizing a case study design to investigate a complex phenomenon or event within its natural context. After conducting a case study with the application integrating theoretical frameworks into literary analysis in Literature for Educational Purposes, it has been perceived a more comprehensible understanding of significant academic value has been perceived that literary theories contribute to the undergraduate literature classroom. Students are trained to evaluate, analyze, and give value to the text they have read. The application of literary theories in the literature classroom instruction has been proven to allow students to develop their literary comprehension. Abstract

This study investigated social media use and self-assessed vocabulary knowledge among English study program students. By conducting a survey of 82 students enrolled in an English study program, the questionnaire sought to reveal the frequency and types of students’ social media use as well as the self-assessed vocabulary knowledge of students. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings indicated that students were moderately active on their social media for learning English, but had variations in the frequency. Further, Instagram and TikTok emerged as the most frequently used platforms for vocabulary acquisition. Even though the moderate engagement of social media use to learn vocabulary, the students demonstrated positive levels in self-assessed vocabulary knowledge. These findings suggest that social media use is an additional learning tool for the students, particularly for learning vocabulary. Therefore, the results of this study suggest that the integration of social media into the language curriculum may support vocabulary acquisition through interactive tasks or assignments. Abstract

One of the critical areas for using English effectively is vocabulary control. However, the vocabulary learning of many Indonesian junior high school learners in semi-rural areas is still problematic because they are not sufficiently exposed to English, and traditional learning activities are retained. The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of digital-based Scrabble games, in this research is Scrabble GO, on the students’ vocabulary mastery at SMPN 32 Bengkulu Tengah. The study adopted the quantitative pre-experimental method with one-group pretest–posttest. Participants were 16 eighth-grade students from one intact class. A 20-item multiple-choice vocabulary test was administered before and after three treatment sessions using Scrabble GO. The data were analyzed using a paired samples t-test. The result showed that the mean score increased from 53.44 on the pretest to 58.75 on the post-test, representing a mean gain of 5.31 points. The paired samples t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between the pretest and post-test scores (p = .001). The results indicate that playing digital Scrabble games can help students significantly improve their vocabulary, behavior, and enhance their motivation and engagement in learning. Although the sample sizes in terms of number of participants are not large, and the research design is arguably not rigorous enough, this study represents early evidence on the use of digital game-based learning as an alternative means for classroom instruction at junior high schools. Abstract

The ability to deliver effective presentations in English has become an essential competency for university students. However, many students enrolled in the General English course still experience difficulties in organizing presentations, using appropriate presentation expressions, and delivering ideas confidently. In addition, instructional materials specifically designed to support English presentation skills in General English contexts remain limited. This study aimed to develop and validate an English for Presentation textbook to support students' speaking skills in General English courses at the University of Bengkulu. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) design adapted from Borg and Gall, involving needs analysis, product development, expert validation, field testing, and product revision. Data were collected through classroom observations, interviews, focus group discussions, and questionnaires administered to expert validators and students. Qualitative data were analyzed using an interactive analysis model, while quantitative data were analyzed descriptively using percentages. The findings revealed that the developed textbook successfully addressed students' learning needs by integrating presentation language, presentation strategies, and practical speaking activities into a structured learning resource. Expert validation indicated that the textbook was valid in terms of content, presentation, and language, while the field trial showed that more than 90% of students responded positively to its clarity, relevance, and usability. These findings suggest that the textbook is both valid and practical for use in General English courses and may serve as an alternative instructional resource to support the development of students' English presentation skills in higher education. Abstract

This study aimed to improve students’ reading comprehension by implementing Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS). This study employed a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design consisting of two cycles based on the model proposed by Kemmis et al. (2014). The participants in the study were 37 students from Class VII.5 at SMP Negeri 1 Kota Bengkulu. The data were collected through observation checklists, field notes, and reading comprehension tests. The implementation of TPRS consisted of three steps: establishing meaning, telling/asking a story, and reading. The results showed a very significant improvement in students’ reading comprehension, which was reflected in the increase in the percentage of students who achieved the Minimum Mastery Criterion (KKM) from the first cycle to the second cycle. This improvement was also supported by the students’ increased engagement, participation, and positive responses during the learning process, indicating that the predetermined criterion of success was achieved. The implication of the findings is that TPRS is an effective instructional method to improve the seventh-grade students’ reading comprehension at the junior high school level.
