Abstract

Tinea is a dermatophyte infection identified in 52% of incidences in the archipelago, with the highest prevalence of tinea inguinalis and tinea corporalis. Coastal workers, especially fishermen who are active in the aquatic environment, have a high predisposition to tinea due to a lifestyle that is negligent to hygiene, high humidity levels, tropical ambient temperatures, the use of damp clothing, accumulation of sweat, and dermal friction that accelerates the proliferation of mycoses. This study aims to evaluate the correlation between the level of cognition, personal hygiene, and domicile conditions to the incidence of tinea among fishermen in Kalianda sub-district. This analytic observational study with a cross-sectional approach involved 44 fishermen respondents who were taken through a simple random method. Data collection included questionnaire survey, clinical examination, and supporting investigation, with statistical analysis using chi-square test. Findings showed that limited cognition increased the probability of tinea by 5-fold, while poor personal sanitation increased the probability by 3-fold. Furthermore, inadequate housing conditions increased the risk by 2-fold. Therefore, the level of knowledge, personal hygiene, as well as the quality of the living environment significantly contributed to the prevalence of tinea in fishermen.

Abstract

Patent ductus arteriosus is one of the congenital heart disease caused by the failure of the ductus arteriosus to close after birth. The ductus arteriosus, a fetal blood vessel connecting the pulmonary artery and the aorta, typically closes within the first 1–3 days in term infants. In PDA, this condition can lead to excessive blood flow to the lungs and systemic hypoperfusion. The incidence of PDA varies, occurring in 0.3–4 per 1,000 live births, and accounts for 5–10% of congenital heart defects. The risk increases with preterm birth, particularly at gestational ages of less than 30 weeks. The younger the gestational age at birth, the higher the risk of PDA. Management of PDA aims to close the ductus arteriosus or alleviate symptoms through conservative therapy, pharmacological treatment, or surgery. By understanding the etiology, prevalence, and therapeutic approaches to PDA, better management strategies can be implemented to minimize complications in newborns.

Abstract

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is a rare form of heart failure that occurs between the last month of pregnancy and up to five months postpartum. It is categorized as dilated cardiomyopathy, which impairs the systolic function of the left ventricle. Its incidence varies from 1:300 to 1:4000 pregnancies, influenced by genetic and cultural factors. The exact cause remains unknown, but it is believed to involve viral infections, autoimmune disorders, toxins, and micronutrient deficiencies. Key risk factors include advanced age, multiparity, multiple pregnancies, obesity, malnutrition, and substance abuse (alcohol and drugs). PPCM is more common in women over 30 years of age and those with a history of multiple pregnancies. Further research is needed to better understand the causes and mechanisms underlying this condition.

Abstract

Obesity is a risk factor for degenerative diseases in developing countries. This is due to changes in people's lifestyles, including physical activity and eating patterns, influenced by the socio-economic development of urban and rural communities. This activity aims to determine the cut-off point for obese nutritional status based on the Body Mass Index (BMI) indicator. The study seeks to evaluate the nutritional and health status of the community in Kessilampe Village, Kendari City, by measuring Body Mass Index (BMI) and waist circumference. A total of 50 respondents participated in this activity, with the majority being women (86%). The research method used a descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach. Data collection was conducted through measurements of height (HT), weight (WT), and body mass index (BMI) on 50 adults, consisting of 7 males and 23 females. The measurement results indicated that 58% of respondents were in the normal weight category, while 26% were overweight and 16% were classified as obese. Waist circumference measurements also revealed that 44% of respondents had a waist circumference between 81-90 cm, indicating health risks associated with obesity.

Abstract

This study aimed to evaluate the sedative-hypnotic effectiveness of keji beling leaf extract (Strobilanthes crispus) on sleep disturbances (insomnia) in mice. The method employed was an experimental design with a completely randomized design (CRD). The study subjects were healthy male mice aged 2–3 months with body weights of 20–30 grams, divided into five treatment groups: negative control, positive control (diazepam), and three groups with EEDKB doses (100 mg/Kg BW, 300 mg/Kg BW, and 500 mg/Kg BW). The fireplace test method was used to assess sleep activity. Data were analyzed using a One Way ANOVA test. The results indicated a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05), suggesting significant differences in sedative-hypnotic effectiveness among the control and treatment groups. In conclusion, EEDKB demonstrated significant sedative effects, with effectiveness increasing proportionally to the dosage

Abstract

Drug-resistant epilepsy is the failure to administer two or more anti-epileptic drugs to an epileptic child which becomes a challenge in its management. Failure of this therapy can result in a decrease in the child's quality of life, such as decreased cognitive function, personality disorders and sleep quality. This can also have a negative impact on the parents who care for them. Vagus nerve stimulation is a device attached to the child's left chest and neck that can stimulate the vagus nerve. This literature review provides a comprehensive overview of vagus nerve stimulation in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy, including a discussion of indications, techniques for use, and scientific evidence for the efficacy of vagus nerve stimulation. We reviewed and analyzed the current scientific evidence to assess the effectiveness of vagus nerve stimulation in the treatment of drug-resistant epilepsy.

Abstract

The hospital is the end of service for victims affected by disasters, the frequency and intensity of disasters that continue to increase give great responsibility to the hospital in reducing the rate of injury and even death so that the resilience of the hospital must be bouncy by maximizing all related elements. However, there is growing evidence that many hospitals are vulnerable to disasters, and more effective strategies are needed to minimize disaster risk. This paper uses the method of narrating a literature review with a simple process hierarchy analysis approach to see the priorities of implementing resilience in hospitals. The result of this paper is that hospital resilience will be able to increase by involving the community, both internal and external, by adopting good practices for community-based disaster risk management.

Abstract

Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a compression neuropathy condition that occurs due to compression of the median nerve at the wrist, often caused by repetitive motion or excessive pressure. CTS can cause symptoms such as pain, tingling, numbness and weakness in the hand, which can interfere with the quality of life. Conservative treatments, such as the use of splints and the administration of corticosteroids, are often effective in mild to moderate cases. However, in more severe cases of CTS that do not respond to conservative therapy, surgery becomes the main option. One of the commonly used surgical methods is the open incision technique, which aims to release compression on the median nerve by incising the carpal ligament. This case report discusses our experience in treating CTS with the open incision technique. Although this technique is more invasive, the long-term results are often satisfactory, with many patients experiencing good recovery. Open incision surgery remains an effective option for CTS patients who do not respond to conservative treatment

Abstract

To become proficient in airway management, a physician must have a thorough understanding of the relevant anatomy, physiology, and pathology of the airway. Knowledge of the tools and techniques used in airway management is essential. In addition, understanding the indications, contraindications, and potential complications of endotracheal intubation is also crucial. Ensuring proper endotracheal tube (ETT) placement remains essential. Clinicians also need to recognize the differences between the airways in adults, children, and neonates, and master strategies for managing difficult airways, as part of the effort to achieve safe and effective airway control.
