Abstract

This research aims to find out what are the phatic expressions and the ways used by employees in using phatic expressions. This research uses a qualitative research design with a descriptive approach to describe the research subject. Data collection techniques used observation and audio recording and observation checklist. The result of this study shows that the use of phatic expressions in the office environment can create a conducive working environment. In this study, the employees used the types of phatic communication in three phases namely opening, medial, and closing phases. The phatic expressions are also adapted with three conditions, namely physical, psychological and security conditions. The ways they use communication are six ways namely greetings and small talk, expressing politeness and gratitude, acknowledging information, closing and farewells, team-building encouragement and expression of empathy. Using phatic expressions can establish good relationships between employees and can create a conducive work environment.

Abstract

This research aimed to identify the influence of an emotional approach on consumer satisfaction and loyalty to Ganesha Operation Makassar. This research uses qualitative methods to obtain data from respondents. Respondents in this study consisted of four employees and two students of Ganesha Operation Makassar. The results obtained from this research show that presenting an emotional approach in service greatly influences consumer comfort. This is because, through an emotional approach, a company can understand consumers from an internal and external perspective, and comfort can form consumer loyalty because a sense of trust has been formed in the company.

Abstract

This study aims to identify the extent of students' speaking ability in English and to find out what are the speaking challenges faced by students in communicating by using talk shows as one of the learning media. This research uses qualitative methods as the method used to obtain data from respondents. Data collection techniques used for interviews and audio recording. The result of this study shows that the use of talk show video affects students' speaking ability, vocabulary processing and the application of speaking techniques. As for the speaking challenges, the difficulties that students face in communicating are the use of high language, fast pronunciation and the application of new vocabulary in conversation.

Abstract

This research examines the strategies used by Business English communication students in mastering new vocabulary within the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) course. Using a qualitative research design, data were collected through interviews and questionnaires. The findings indicate that cognitive strategies such as constructing sentences or paragraphs, extensive reading, and watching movies or listening to music help students gain a deeper and more natural understanding of vocabulary usage, thereby strengthening long-term retention. As a result, these strategies are employed by the majority of Business English Communication students to master new vocabulary in the ESP course.Meanwhile, memory strategies, such as mnemonics and flashcards, have proven effective in enhancing short-term memory, enabling students to quickly memorize technical terms. Group discussions, as a social strategy, also have a positive impact by providing an interactive learning environment that enhances contextual understanding and builds confidence in using academic vocabulary.Furthermore, this research highlights that the effectiveness of each strategy depends on its alignment with students' individual needs and learning styles. A well-suited combination of strategies can enrich vocabulary learning experiences in the ESP course, improving memory, comprehension, and the application of vocabulary in professional contexts. Ultimately, these strategies prepare students to succeed in future academic and professional environments.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the implementation of the Emancipated Curriculum at an Islamic Senior High School in Parepare. A qualitative research design was employed. The participants of this study were teachers at MAN 2 Kota Parepare during the 2024/2025 academic year, including the P5 supervisory team and English teachers. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. The findings reveal that the Emancipated Curriculum at MAN 2 Kota Parepare has been effectively implemented by teachers through careful planning, classroom instruction, and evaluation. The curriculum has encouraged students to become more active, think critically, and enhance their knowledge and skills. Most teachers expressed positive perceptions toward the Emancipated Curriculum, noting that it provides greater flexibility in designing lessons that address students’ needs. It also promotes creativity and supports technology-integrated learning, despite some remaining challenges. Overall, the implementation of the Emancipated Curriculum has positively transformed the learning environment by granting greater autonomy to both teachers and students.

Abstract

This study describes how effective public speaking techniques help communicate the unique features and benefits of Mercure Hotel in Makassar. Public speaking is crucial in the hospitality industry for influencing customer perceptions and enhancing engagement. The research utilizes qualitative methods through questionnaires, distributed both online and face-to-face, to capture the perspectives of hotel guests and staff. The findings show that verbal and nonverbal communication significantly improve customer satisfaction and loyalty. Verbal communication helps convey clear messages, while nonverbal elements like eye contact and body language strengthen emotional connections. This study suggests that training hotel staff in public speaking can enhance their ability to effectively engage with customers and promote the hotel's offerings, thereby increasing guest loyalty and brand reputation.

Abstract

This study investigated Grade VIII learners’ perceptions of using question games to improve speaking skills in an Indonesian EFL classroom. Employing a qualitative case study design, the research drew on classroom observations, four focus group discussions, reflective journal entries, and a students’ perception questionnaire (data collection conducted over four weeks) to capture both collective and individual experiences. Thematic analysis revealed consistently positive learner responses: students reported heightened enjoyment and motivation, increased confidence in speaking, greater incidental vocabulary acquisition, and a clear preference for small-group game formats that lowered affective barriers to participation. Quantitative summary data from the questionnaire corroborated these themes. Pedagogically, the findings indicate that question games can create low-pressure, interaction-rich opportunities that support fluency and willingness to communicate, provided they are complemented by teacher scaffolding and vocabulary reinforcement. Limitations include the single-class setting and short intervention period; future research should employ longitudinal designs, larger and more varied samples, and objective measures of speaking gains to triangulate perceptual evidence.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the factors contributing to student burnout. This study employed a qualitative approach involving 10 participants from students in the English Education Study Program at UNM. Data were collected through self-report instruments and semi-structured interviews to gain a deeper understanding of the students' experiences with burnout. The findings revealed that several factors, such as academic workload, lack of control, insufficient support, and unclear goals, contributed to feelings of burnout. These insights highlight the importance of addressing burnout in educational settings to support students' well-being and academic involvement.
