Abstract

This paper discusses The History of Java (first published in 1817 and published in Indonesian translation in 2014) by Thomas Stamford Raffles about the archipelago's spices, trade, and colonization. Since the arrival of the Portuguese in the easternmost of the archipelago in 1510, Western societies have been hunting for commodities that can be sold. They are middlemen, corporations, and hunters. The gastrocritical method developed by Endraswara was used to obtain literary data. The results of the primary data were linked intertextually to Nagara Krtagama (first published in 1365, then republished in 2009), Sair Rempah-Rempah by Mas Marco Kartodikromo (1919), and Aruna dan Lidahnya (2014) by Laksmi Pamuntjak. The study results show that the spice discourse not only discusses the "Spice Path" but also the path of the meaning of spices in building Indonesia. Spices and Indonesianness are a unity in precolonial and postcolonial history in Indonesia. As a recommendation, spice literature evokes memories of past glories. Spices are a symbol of reminder and healing the wounds of the past.

Abstract

This study was structured with the aim of analyzing the existence of tobacco farmers in Genduk as a social reality through a sociological review of literature. This study uses a qualitative descriptive research method that focuses on the sociology of literature approach through Wellek and Warren's sociology combined with the concept of social reality. The results of the study show that the tobacco farmers in Genduk are not mere works of fiction, but instead Genduk is the bearer of the "message" conveyed by the author about the life story of tobacco farmers on the slopes of Mount Sindoro. The social reality conveyed by the author is known to refer to objective reality, as a result of the author's thought on the experience he has gone through as a native of Temanggung, Central Java, who also has a life story on the slopes of Mount Sindoro. Therefore it can be concluded that the tobacco farmers in Genduk are a social reality resulting from the thought of reality combined with social phenomena, which refers to the essence of humanity.

Abstract

A different wave of uniqueness characterizes Christmas celebrations after the Covid-19 era compared to pre-pandemic celebrations. Every year, Christmas is accompanied by a consistent message theme. The Christmas message of 2023 from the Communion of Churches in Indonesia (PGI) and the Indonesian Church Guardian Conference (KWI) is closely related to the challenges faced by the nation, becoming the basis for the people in honoring God. This research explores the socio-cultural nuances contained in these Christmas messages. With a descriptive qualitative approach, this research uses Fairclough's critical discourse analysis framework and a theological perspective. Data obtained from internet downloads was reduced to identify key analysis elements. The analysis was conducted through three stages of Fairclough's model: text analysis, including description, interpretation, and explanation; discursive practices; and socio-cultural contextualized experience. Findings indicate the presence of eleven keywords in the Easter message, featuring linguistic diversity, including repetition, imperative language, persuasion, and causation. In addition, the socio-cultural insights highlighted caution towards election preparation, identity politics, environmental preservation, the impact of globalization, vigilance in using social media, and technological advancement. These Christmas messages are hoped to appropriately shape people's attitudes to create inner peace and prosperity in honoring God.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the values ??of local wisdom contained in the guritan Keriye Rumbang Ngempang Lematang of the Basemah community, especially in Pagaralam City. The method used in studying the guritan Keriye Rumbang Ngempang Lematang is a qualitative method using an ethnographic approach according to Spradley. The research steps have been simplified as (1) determining informants; (2) interviewing informants; (3) making ethnographic notes; (4) asking descriptive questions; (5) conducting analysis of ethnographic interviews; (6) make component analysis (7) find cultural themes (8) write an ethnography. The simplification was carried out due to the limited resources, time, and cost of the researcher. Another reason that causes researchers to take this step is that existing circumstances such as this pandemic have only taken these eight steps without leaving the core of the twelve main steps. The data collection technique used is the interview technique. The results of the study show that the forms of local wisdom values ??contained in the guritan Keriye Rumbang Ngempang Lematang are local wisdom such as discipline, education, hard work, persistence, religion, mutual cooperation, local preservation, and cultural creativity.

Abstract

Other than social media, Facebook also has a special feature called Forum Jual Beli (FJB), which functions as a medium for buying, selling, or promoting products among fellow users. This study aims to describe the process of register lexicon formation and the function of its use in the smartphone buy and sell community on Facebook named Group Jual Beli Handphone Yogyakarta. The type of research is descriptive-qualitative with a sociolinguistics approach. The theories used to analyze the data include Kridalaksana's (1989) morphological process and Halliday's (1973) language function. Based on the results of the research, the process of word formation found includes affixation, composition, acronyms, clipping, abbreviations, and zero derivation. When viewed from its function, the register of the smartphone buy-and-sell community on FJB group fulfills instrumental, regulatory, representational, and heuristic functions.

Abstract

The legend of Sangkuriang is often associated with the creation of Mount Tangkuban Perahu in West Java. It has been retold in various versions, including children's folklore and deconstructed narratives. Regardless of the variation, the story always involves instances of expulsion. There are three expulsions: the expulsion of the god into a dog and the goddess into a pig; the expulsion of Dayang Sumbi into the wilderness; and the expulsion of Sangkuriang by Dayang Sumbi. This study aims to compare the similarities and differences in the reasons behind these expulsions. By understanding the reasons behind the characters' expulsions, readers are encouraged to avoid making the same mistakes in the real world. The research utilizes a qualitative descriptive method with a comparative literary analysis technique, comparing two works: the Indonesian retelling of Cerita Rakyat Sangkuriang by Harnaeni Hamdan and the deconstructed novel Sangkuriang Garing by Givi Givani in the Sundanese language. The result of this research is that the expulsion happened because of forbidden love, pregnancy outside marriage, and killing one's father.
