Abstract

Writing is an essential component of learning English as a foreign language that allows learners to communicate ideas, experiences, and information effectively through written texts. Despite its importance, many students encounter difficulties when writing recount texts, particularly in generating ideas, organizing information, and presenting events in chronological order. Mind mapping has been widely applied as a visual pre-writing strategy to assist learners in planning and developing their ideas before composing a text. This study explored the use of mind mapping in teaching students to write recount texts and examined students' opinions of its strengths and weaknesses. A qualitative approach was employed involving 28 tenth-grade students of SMK Diponegoro Karanganyar in the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were gathered using classroom observation, questionnaires completed by all participants, and semi-structured interviews with 11 students chosen through purposive sampling. The data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the use of mind mapping successfully supported students during the planning stage by helping them generate ideas, organize information, and arrange events systematically before writing. Students also perceived the strategy as engaging and beneficial because it increased their confidence and participation during classroom activities. Nevertheless, several challenges were identified, including the additional time needed to construct mind maps, difficulties in determining appropriate keywords, and students' reliance on teacher guidance during the initial stages of implementation. Overall, the study suggests that mind mapping is a valuable instructional strategy for facilitating their writing ability to produce recount texts.

Abstract

The use of informal language has become increasingly common in social media communication, especially among content creators who aim to make their content more engaging and relatable. This study aims to analyze the types and functions of informal language used in Ageng Carlitos’ Instagram videos and to examine viewers’ responses through sentiment analysis. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from two Instagram videos, “Warung Es Cekek Asli Brooklyn” and “Stereotype”, along with viewers’ comments. The findings revealed five types of informal language: slang, contractions, abbreviations, colloquial expressions, and simplified grammatical structures. Slang was identified as the most frequently used type and reflected the characteristics of the Brooklyn rap style. The analysis also showed that informal language served several communicative functions, such as creating a friendly atmosphere, simplifying communication, and attracting viewers’ attention. In addition, the sentiment analysis indicated that positive comments dominated viewers’ responses, suggesting that Ageng Carlitos’ conversational style successfully increased viewers' interest and helped them understand the intended messages. Therefore, informal language can be considered an effective strategy for delivering English-learning content through social media.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral component of higher education and is increasingly recognized as a strategic competency required for future employment. However, although university students frequently utilize AI technologies, limited empirical evidence explains how AI literacy contributes to workforce readiness through the development of human capital. This study aims to examine the direct effects of AI Literacy on Human Capital Development and Workforce Readiness, as well as the mediating role of Human Capital Development in the relationship between AI Literacy and Workforce Readiness among university students. A quantitative explanatory research design was employed using a census sampling technique involving 200 active students from the Community Education Study Program, Faculty of Teacher Training and Education, Universitas Riau, Indonesia. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire using a five-point Likert scale and analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS 4. The findings indicate that AI Literacy positively influences Human Capital Development and Workforce Readiness, while Human Capital Development also exerts a significant positive effect on Workforce Readiness and partially mediates the relationship between AI Literacy and Workforce Readiness. These findings demonstrate that AI Literacy extends beyond technological competence by strengthening students' human capital and enhancing their readiness for the digital workforce. Therefore, higher education institutions should integrate AI literacy into teaching and learning practices to foster graduate competitiveness and sustainable workforce preparedness in the era of digital transformation.

Abstract

Basic mathematical skills in preschool children often face developmental challenges due to the lack of interactive and engaging learning resources in kindergartens. This community service activity aims to implement and test the effectiveness of a puzzle game-based educational media application in enhancing children's learning interest and analytical thinking skills. The developed puzzle game application integrates three types of educational games: selecting animals according to their habitat in the first game, matching geometric shapes into empty spaces in the second game, and counting the number of animals that appear in the third game. The method applied follows the Research and Development (R&D) approach to create a valid and practical product for partners. Field data analysis shows that validation by media experts recorded an average score of 95.1%, falling into the highly valid category. On the other hand, the validation of the student learning interest instrument reached a score of 95.8%, indicating a high level of relevance. The tangible results of using this media demonstrate a clear and significant increase in children's positive responses and learning enthusiasm during basic mathematics sessions. Thus, this puzzle game-based learning is proven effective as an alternative method to enhance mathematical thinking skills in preschool children.

Abstract

The growing consumption of English-language entertainment content through streaming platforms has made subtitles a crucial linguistic and cultural bridge, particularly in handling offensive language (swearing), which is pragmatic and highly context-sensitive in nature. This study aims to identify the types of offensive language based on Timothy Jay's (1992) taxonomy and the translation strategies based on Henrik Gottlieb's (1992) taxonomy in the subtitles of the film No Hard Feelings (2023), as well as to map the relationship pattern between the two. The study employs a qualitative-descriptive method with a content-analysis approach applied to 111 pairs of English-Indonesian subtitles containing offensive language, matched by timestamp and manually verified against sentence context. The results show that the Vulgarity (51.4%) and Obscenity (32.4%) categories are the most dominant in the data, while the Euphemization strategy dominates the translations (76.6%), followed by Omission/Condensation (12.6%) and Equivalent/Neutral Transfer (10.8%). Cross-tabulation reveals that Vulgarity is most often handled through Euphemization and Omission, Obscenity is consistently euphemized without ever being omitted, while Profanity tends to be transferred neutrally. These findings indicate that subtitle translators consistently prioritize Indonesian socio-cultural norms over pragmatic equivalence, particularly for sexual and explicit-swearing categories. This study contributes theoretically by demonstrating the productivity of combining the Jay and Gottlieb frameworks to analyze the type and strategy dimensions of offensive language simultaneously, and practically by providing a reference for subtitle translators in balancing fidelity of meaning with cultural appropriateness.

Abstract

The novel, as a central literary genre, in particular, tells a deep and complex story, recording experiences at various epochs and conveying life's situations and values. And the instinctive demands that every literary work demands from its readers is an analysis of the overall structure of the fictional movement at the time of its narrative. The internal structure of the novel is analyzed using structuralism, which views literary works as integrated structures. Structuralism stipulates that research must focus on the elements and their functional relationships to provide a comprehensive understanding. Its intrinsic elements: subject, plot, characters, setting, language, point of view, and message are the elements that build the work from within. This study aims to: First, identify, describe, and interpret the intrinsic elements in the novel 7 deaths by Nahriah Idrus including: theme, characters and characterization, plot, setting, point of view, style of language, moral message; and Second, analyze the functional relationship between elements. The type of research applied is qualitative research with content analysis method. The results of the study on the intrinsic elements contained in the novel 7 Deaths by Nahriah Idrus, out of a total of 877 intrinsic elements, can be explained that the intrinsic element of setting or setting is the most dominant or numerous element. Therefore, it can be concluded that in the novel 7 Deaths by Nahriah Idrus, many settings or settings are used as intrinsic elements.

Abstract

In Thai EFL classrooms, limited vocabulary knowledge, low confidence, and high speaking anxiety often hinder students’ oral participation and reduce opportunities for meaningful communication in English. These challenges highlight the need for instructional approaches that simultaneously strengthen vocabulary mastery and encourage active speaking practice in authentic contexts. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of integrating role play with interactive digital flashcards to support students’ speaking ability in a Thai secondary school. The study employs a mixed-methods approach with a quasi-experimental design using a one-group pre-test and post-test model. Quantitative data are collected through speaking tests assessing fluency, pronunciation, vocabulary use, and interaction, while qualitative data are gathered through classroom observations to explore students’ engagement, participation, and responses during the learning process. The instructional treatment combines vocabulary preparation through interactive digital flashcards with communicative role-play activities to promote active language use, increase students’ confidence, and create a more engaging learning environment. It is expected that this integrated approach will improve students’ speaking performance and motivation. Furthermore, this study is expected to contribute to EFL speaking pedagogy by providing empirical insights into the integration of communicative strategies and digital vocabulary support in secondary school contexts.

Abstract

Listening comprehension remains one of the most demanding receptive skills in English Language Teaching (ELT), frequently hindered by student anxiety and constrained exposure within conventional classroom settings. This qualitative descriptive study investigates middle school students' perceptions regarding the autonomous habit of listening to English songs outside the formal curriculum and its perceived contribution to their listening proficiency. Utilizing a purposive sampling approach, qualitative data were gathered from eighth-grade students at SMP Pius Pekalongan through open-ended questionnaires, semi-structured interviews with key informants, direct classroom observations, and documentary analysis, complemented by teacher triangulation. The data were iteratively processed following the Miles and Huberman framework, comprising data reduction, data display, and verified conclusion drawing. The findings demonstrate that students hold highly favorable perceptions toward self-directed song listening, categorizing it as an engaging daily pastime rather than a rigorous academic obligation. This continuous exposure significantly facilitates implicit vocabulary acquisition, attunes learners to native phonetic articulation, and lowers anxiety levels in alignment with Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis. Additionally, students identified tracks characterized by moderate tempos, clear articulation, and accessible lyrical structures as the most efficacious for auditory comprehension. While informal song exposure markedly reinforces student confidence and auditory familiarity, it functions optimally as a supplementary learning strategy alongside structured pedagogical instruction.

Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is a fundamental component of English language learning, particularly in EFL contexts where students have limited exposure to English outside the classroom. However, many secondary school students in Thailand still experience difficulties in acquiring basic English vocabulary, which affects their comprehension and classroom participation. This study investigates the effectiveness of education game media with animated videos in improving students’ English vocabulary mastery. The study employed a quantitative approach using a one-group pre-test and post-test quasi-experimental design. The participants were 15 secondary school students from one class in a Thai secondary school. Data were collected through vocabulary tests administered before and after the implementation of animated video-based instruction integrated with game activities. The instructional treatment was conducted over four meetings during regular English lessons. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential analysis to examine differences between pre-test and post-test scores. The findings indicate that education game media with animated videos has a significant positive effect on students’ vocabulary mastery. The use of animated visuals, audio input, and interactive games promotes active engagement and supports vocabulary learning more effectively than traditional instruction.
