Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the effect of adding aqueous Mentha sp. (mint) leaf extract at different concentrations (1%, 2%, and 3%) on the properties of collagen cubes extracted from chicken feet. Collagen was obtained from chicken feet and used to produce functional cubes enriched with natural mint extract. The results revealed that the addition of mint extract significantly improved the sensory attributes of the collagen cubes, particularly flavor, juiciness, texture, and overall acceptability. Among all treatments, the sample containing 2% mint extract (T3) achieved the highest scores (p < 0.05), indicating that this concentration provided the most desirable balance between firmness, flavor intensity, and consumer preference. The improvement is mainly attributed to the phenolic and antioxidant compounds present in Mentha sp., which enhance water retention, stabilize the collagen network, and minimize undesirable odors that may develop during processing or storage. However, increasing the extract concentration to 3% slightly reduced acceptability due to the strong herbal flavor dominating the product. These findings suggest that moderate incorporation of Mentha sp. extract (2%) into chicken feet collagen cubes can enhance product quality and sensory appeal, providing a promising approach for developing innovative, natural, and health-promoting collagen-based functional foods.

Abstract

Blood sugar levels are the glucose present in the blood originating from carbohydrates in meals and can be stored in the form of glycogen in the liver and skeletal muscles. If blood sugar levels are excessively high, it can lead to a condition called hyperglycemia, which if left untreated can lead to a metabolic disorder called Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes mellitus has several complications, one of which is obesity. BMI is one of the methods used to determine whether a person is affected by diabetes or not. To investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and fasting blood sugar levels among students of the 2021 intake at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Muhammadiyah North Sumatra. A cross-sectional approach was used, with data collected once at the same time. Data was collected using a glucometer to measure fasting blood sugar levels, an analog scale to measure body weight, and a stature meter to measure height. The Mann-Whitney test for body mass index with fasting blood sugar levels yielded a result of P>0.05. The result of this study is that there is no relationship between BMI and fasting blood sugar levels among students.

Abstract

Smoking remains a widespread habit in Indonesia, particularly in Medan, where the prevalence of daily smokers reaches 55.2%, exceeding the national average of 54% in 2016. Despite awareness of the health risks associated with tobacco, many individuals continue smoking and some have shifted to e-cigarettes as an alternative. However, e-cigarettes are also known to have harmful effects on the body, including potential changes in leukocyte count. This study aimed to compare the total leukocyte count between conventional cigarette users and e-cigarette users. It employed an analytical observational approach with a cross-sectional design involving 60 respondents selected through purposive sampling based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The results showed that most respondents had smoked for 1–5 years. Conventional cigarette users typically smoked 1–5 cigarettes per day, while e-cigarette users consumed 1–2 ml of liquid daily. The Mann-Whitney test produced a significance value of 0.525 (>0.05), indicating no significant difference in the total leukocyte count between conventional and e-cigarette users among medical students at the University of Muhammadiyah North Sumatra.

Abstract

Helminthiasis remains a significant public health concern worldwide. Soil-transmitted helminths (STH) are a group of intestinal parasites transmitted through contaminated soil that can cause infections in humans. Basophils and eosinophils are types of white blood cells that play crucial roles in the immune response against STH infections. When infected with STH, the human body triggers an immune reaction that increases the eosinophil and basophil counts in the bloodstream. To determine the differences in eosinophil and basophil counts before and after the administration of pyrantel pamoate among waste collectors infected with STH at the Terjun Landfill, Medan Marelan District. This study employed a pre-test post-test without control group design to assess changes in eosinophil and basophil counts before and after the administration of pyrantel pamoate. Out of 104 waste collectors who agreed to undergo fecal examination, 35 individuals tested positive for STH infection using the direct smear method. Complete blood count (CBC) tests were performed on these 35 individuals prior to treatment using a hematology analyzer. One week after the administration of pyrantel pamoate, the same individuals underwent repeat CBC testing. Among the 35 STH-infected samples, the mean eosinophil count before treatment was 10.310%, which decreased to 1.085% after treatment. The mean basophil count before treatment was 0.942%, and dropped to 0.000% after treatment. Statistical analysis revealed a significant difference (p < 0.05) in both eosinophil and basophil counts before and after pyrantel pamoate administration. There was a significant difference in eosinophil and basophil counts before and after the administration of pyrantel pamoate among waste collectors infected with STH, indicating that antiparasitic treatment effectively reduced immune response markers associated with STH infection.

Abstract

Dengue fever continues to be a significant public health issue in Indonesia, with Bengkulu City classified as an endemic area. The transmission of dengue is highly influenced by the density of Aedes aegypti vectors and environmental factors that support their breeding and survival. This study aimed to evaluate the level of Aedes aegypti larval infestation and adult mosquito density as the basis for assessing dengue transmission risk and to analyze the relationship between environmental factors and larval presence in the working area of Sawah Lebar Public Health Center, Bengkulu City. An entomological survey with a descriptive-analytic approach was conducted from January to March 2023 across five neighborhoods (RTs). A total of 100 houses and 189 water containers were examined using the House Index (HI), Container Index (CI), Breteau Index (BI), and Larval Free Index (ABJ). Adult mosquitoes were collected using resting collection and human landing catch methods. The relationship between environmental factors and larval presence was analyzed using the chi-square test (p<0.05). Of the 100 houses examined, 73 (73%) were positive for larvae, and 148 of 189 containers (78.3%) contained Aedes aegypti larvae. The highest infestation was recorded in RT 23, with HI 93.3%, CI 89.3%, BI 223.3%, and ABJ 6.7%, indicating a very high transmission risk. Aedes aegypti dominated adult mosquito collections (73.8%) compared to Aedes albopictus (26.2%). Statistical analysis showed significant associations between larval presence and uncovered water containers (p=0.004), poor waste disposal (p=0.021), and the absence of regular source reduction activities (p=0.001). The Sawah Lebar area exhibited high larval infestation and adult Aedes aegypti density, indicating a substantial risk of dengue transmission. Vector control should be strengthened through the implementation of Integrated Vector Management (IVM), emphasizing community participation in “3M Plus” practices, regular larval surveillance, environmental sanitation improvement, and intersectoral collaboration to ensure sustainable dengue prevention.

Abstract

This study aims to comprehensively review the role of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) as a marker of astrocyte activation in Alzheimer's disease (AD). The research utilized a descriptive-qualitative literature review approach by analyzing various current scientific sources, including indexed international journal articles, research reports, and relevant academic documents published between 2015 and 2025. Data collection involved systematic literature search techniques, followed by analysis comprising theme identification, data reduction, concept categorization, and inductive conclusion drawing to obtain a holistic understanding of the phenomenon under study. The study results show that GFAP plays a crucial role as a sensitive biomarker for astrocyte activation that occurs since the preclinical phase of Alzheimer's, demonstrating a strong correlation with amyloid-beta accumulation and the neuroinflammatory process. In addition to its function in early detection, GFAP is also capable of predicting the conversion of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to Alzheimer's dementia with high diagnostic accuracy. Despite limitations in specificity and measurement variation, the integration of GFAP with other biomarkers such as pTau, NfL, and YKL-40 significantly enhances diagnostic validity and its potential for therapy monitoring. In conclusion, GFAP is a multifunctional biomarker that not only deepens our understanding of the mechanisms of reactive astrocytosis in AD pathogenesis but also provides new directions for the development of non-invasive diagnostics and more precise therapeutic strategies in neurodegenerative diseases.
