Abstract

This study examines the paradox of the growth of Indonesia’s palm oil industry, where the impressive economic expansion of giant corporations such as PT Wilmar contrasts sharply with the declining quality of the living environment of local communities, particularly in South Labuhanbatu Regency. Employing a multi-perspective approach that integrates the theories of structural exclusion, cultural poverty, and James Scott’s moral economy, this study aims to analyze the phenomenon of fresh fruit bunch (FFB) theft, commonly referred to as “palm oil ninjas,” not merely as an act of criminality but as a manifestation of everyday resistance and a form of negotiated redistribution of wealth. Based on secondary data analysis and a comprehensive review of relevant literature, the conversion of customary land into Hak Guna Usaha (HGU) concessions has triggered systemic marginalization, undermined local food sovereignty, and created dependence on vulnerable wage labor. This condition has been exacerbated by the ineffectiveness of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs and the unequal allocation of Village Funds, resulting in social dysfunction and the intergenerational normalization of cultural poverty. The novelty of this study lies in the reconceptualization of palm oil theft as a form of negotiated redistribution within the context of contemporary agrarian inequality. The findings recommend reformulating CSR programs and developing participatory and inclusive plasma plantation schemes to reconstruct the social contract between corporations and local communities.

Abstract

This research investigates the tradition of prayer water in Labuhan Bilik using a Living Qur’an framework, focusing on how local residents receive and interpret the sacred verses integrated into the practice, alongside its underlying meanings. Employing a descriptive qualitative methodology combined with field study techniques such as participant observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation the investigation gathers data from key informants, including religious figures who prepare the prayer water and community members who utilize it for healing and well-being. The findings reveal that this tradition constitutes a functional reception of the Qur’an, where scriptural verses serve as conduits for prayer, physical and spiritual restoration, safety, and divine grace. This ritual is firmly anchored in the conviction that ultimate health and providence originate from Allah SWT, with the treated water acting purely as a spiritual medium. Furthermore, the custom highlights an active engagement between the populace and the holy text, transitioning from mere textual recitation to concrete socio-religious execution. Ultimately, the study asserts that the prayer water ritual in Labuhan Bilik exemplifies the Living Qur’an paradigm, demonstrating the scripture's dynamic presence in everyday life and enriching spiritual and cultural dimensions, provided it remains strictly aligned with Islamic monotheistic principles that recognize Allah SWT as the absolute healer and provider.

Abstract

Grief is a universal emotional experience and an inherent part of human nature (fitrah). The Qur'an not only provides guidance on matters of faith, worship, and Islamic law but also portrays various emotional expressions through the stories of the prophets, one of which is the story of Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob) in Surah Yusuf verses 84–86. This study aims to analyze M. Quraish Shihab's interpretation of Surah Yusuf verses 84–86 in Tafsir Al-Mishbah and to examine the representation of grief expressions contained within these verses. The study employs a qualitative approach using library research. The primary sources consist of the Qur'an, particularly Surah Yusuf verses 84–86, and Tafsir Al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab, while the secondary sources include books, scholarly journal articles, and relevant previous studies. The findings reveal that M. Quraish Shihab interprets Prophet Ya'qub's expressions of grief as a natural human response that does not contradict the values of faith. These expressions are manifested through interconnected stages: the verbal expression of grief (ya asafa), the physical impact reflected in the whitening of his eyes due to profound sorrow, emotional self-restraint (kazim), and the complete submission of all sorrow and anguish to Allah through the statement, innama asyku bassi wa huzni ilallah (I only complain of my anguish and grief to Allah). These findings demonstrate that Tafsir Al-Mishbah portrays grief not as a manifestation of despair, but as a spiritual process founded upon patience (sabr), steadfast faith, and trust in Allah (tawakkul) in facing loss. This study is expected to enrich the field of Qur'anic and Tafsir Studies, particularly discussions on emotional expressions in the Qur'an from the perspective of contemporary Qur'anic exegesis.

Abstract

This study examines the concept of inner peace in the Qur’anic perspective, focusing on Surah Ar-Ra’d verse 28 and its relevance to self-healing and mental health awareness in the modern era. This research employs a qualitative method using a library research approach by analyzing Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir), academic journals, books, and both Islamic and contemporary psychological literature. The findings indicate that ṭuma’ninah (tranquility of the heart) in Surah Ar-Ra’d verse 28 represents a psychospiritual state achieved through the remembrance of Allah (dhikr). Dhikr functions not only as a ritual act of worship but also as an emotional regulation mechanism that reduces stress, anxiety, and other psychological disturbances. From the maqasidic interpretation perspective, this concept aligns with the objectives of preserving life (hifz al-nafs) and intellect (hifz al-‘aql). Furthermore, the study reveals a strong correlation between Qur’anic inner peace and modern psychological theories such as emotion regulation, mindfulness, and subjective well-being. Therefore, Surah Ar-Ra’d verse 28 offers a holistic spiritual-based self-healing approach that remains highly relevant in addressing contemporary mental health challenges.

Abstract

This research investigates the application of infaq in achieving life's blessings through the Qur'an using the thematic interpretation method. The applied methodology is a comprehensive qualitative library study. Primary sources comprise sacred verses concerning infaq alongside authoritative exegetical literature, including Tafsir Al-Mishbah, al-Ṭabari's Jāmi' al-Bayān, Ibn Kathir's Tafsīr al-Qur'ān al-'Aẓīm, and Wahbah al-Zuhayli's Tafsīr al-Munīr. Meanwhile, supporting literature was gathered from relevant academic journals and books. The analytical process involves compiling related verses, reviewing exegetes' perspectives, and subsequently drawing connections to the concept of blessing. The findings demonstrate that infaq harmoniously integrates divine and humanitarian values. The Qur'an positions worldly wealth as an absolute trust from Allah for collective welfare. Sharing material goods does not merely assist those in need; it also forges a generous character and deepens gratitude. Moreover, the concept of blessing transcends mere accumulation of material quantity, encompassing inner peace, ease in affairs, social harmony, and sustainable goodness. In conclusion, the habituation of infaq constitutes a concrete actualization of Qur'anic teachings to obtain multidimensional blessings in contemporary society.

Abstract

This research examines the concept of sustenance (rizq) through Quranic exegesis (tafsir) alongside the lived experiences of congregants at Majelis Nurur Rahmah in Medan Sunggal, North Sumatra, who regularly recite Surah Al-Waqi'ah to attract divine provision. Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach grounded in a Living Qur'an framework, this study conceptualizes the Quran beyond a static text, viewing it as an active spiritual force embedded within communal and religious routines. Data were gathered through direct observation, semi-structured interviews, and documentary analysis with active members of the assembly. Findings reveal that exegetes interpret rizq holistically, encompassing both tangible assets such as wealth and physical wellbeing and intangible blessings, including inner tranquility, wisdom, and eternal salvation. The systematic recitation of Surah Al-Waqi'ah serves as a core spiritual endeavor (ikhtiar), complemented by specific verses associated with abundance. Congregants' perceptions of this practice fall into three primary orientations: (1) a spiritual means to draw nearer to God (mutaqarrib), (2) a psychological anchor fostering emotional stability during financial distress, and (3) a sacred ritual that reinforces the internalization of monotheistic principles (tawhid).

Abstract

Global ecological degradation is rooted not merely in environmental exploitation, but in anthropocentric and overly rationalist mindsets that sever humanity’s spiritual ties with the natural world. The Qur'an posits that every creation continuously praises Allah, endowing nature with an intrinsic theological significance beyond mere material utility. This study investigates the conceptualization of cosmic tasbīḥ within Wahbah al-Zuḥaylī’s Tafsīr al-Munīr, utilizing Surah al-Isrā’ [17]:44 as the core text alongside supporting evidence from Surah al-Nūr [24]:41 and Surah al-Ra’d [13]:13–15. Employing a qualitative library-based methodology, this research adopts a single-source thematic exegesis (maudhu’ī) approach. Primary data drawn from Tafsīr al-Munīr is complemented by secondary literature covering Islamic ecotheology, natural philosophy, scientific tafsīr, and the religion-science discourse. Data analysis follows the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña, encompassing data reduction, structured presentation, and iterative verification. Findings reveal that al-Zuḥaylī conceptualizes tasbīḥ as the foundational ontology of creation, manifested through strict adherence to divine natural law (sunnatullāh) across biological life and natural phenomena. While Surah al-Nūr [24]:41 uses birds to exemplify cosmic awareness, Surah al-Ra’d [13]:13–15 extends this glorification to thunder, lightning, clouds, rain, and shadows. Synthesizing these verses constructs a framework for Cosmic Tasbīḥ Ecotheology a holistic paradigm merging tawḥīd, physical ontology, integrative epistemology (revelation and science), and environmental ethics. Ultimately, environmental stewardship in the Qur'anic framework transcends the moral mandate of human vicegerency (khalīfah), operating as a profound act of reverence toward all praising entities within the cosmos.

Abstract

The phenomenon of sleep paralysis, commonly known in Indonesia as ketindihan, is often interpreted as a supernatural disturbance. In Islamic tradition, the concepts of al-jatsum and satanic disturbance during sleep describe symptoms comparable to this condition. This study aims to analyze the relationship between hadith, classical scholarly interpretations, and modern neurological findings concerning sleep paralysis. This research employs a library research approach using thematic hadith (al-ḥadīṡ al-mawḍū‘ī) and an interdisciplinary comparative analysis integrating hadith studies with modern neurological literature. The findings indicate that hadith and classical commentaries emphasize the spiritual dimension of the phenomenon while recommending preventive sleep practices, including ablution, dhikr, and sleeping on the right side. In contrast, modern neurology explains sleep paralysis as a transitional disorder between Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep and wakefulness, in which REM atonia persists despite partial awakening. The study demonstrates a conceptual correspondence between Islamic sleep etiquette and modern sleep health principles without equating the epistemological foundations of religion and science. Therefore, hadith scholarship and modern neurology represent different yet complementary perspectives in understanding sleep paralysis.

Abstract

The requirement of two female witnesses in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 282 frequently serves as a flashpoint in debates surrounding gender equality within Islamic jurisprudence. This provision is often misconstrued as a permanent devaluation of women's intellectual agency and human dignity. Employing a qualitative library research methodology, this study examines the nuanced interpretations of the verse by comparing four distinct scholarly perspectives. The analysis demonstrates a diverse spectrum of thought: literalist approaches treat the rule as an immutable mandate, classical jurisprudence situates it within judicial prerequisites and civil law boundaries, sociological readings view it as practical advice contextualized by historical periods of limited female economic involvement, and linguistic analyses highlight its intent as a legal safeguard for certainty rather than an assertion of gender hierarchy. Ultimately, the study reveals that the Quran does not institutionalize gender discrimination; rather, the variety of interpretive outcomes illustrates the textual adaptability to evolving contexts and analytical frameworks.

Abstract

The family is the smallest institution within the social structure and serves as a foundation for the stability of a state. Happiness is a fundamental goal that people continually strive to achieve. However, family happiness is not assessed solely from an external perspective but also encompasses an inner dimension closely related to spirituality. One method believed to foster inner peace is the Qadiriyah Naqsyabandiyah Sufi Order (TQN). The distinctive feature of TQN at Suryalaya Islamic Boarding School lies in the recitation of the tanbih by the spiritual guide, Sheikh Abdullah Mubarok bin Nur Muhammad (Abah Sepuh), which was formulated as a moral and spiritual guideline based on divine messages to be applied in daily life. This study employed a phenomenological method with a qualitative approach. The study focused on gaining an in-depth understanding of individuals’ experiences in internalizing the teachings of tanbih through interviews and observations. The research was conducted in Kertaraharja Village, Panumbangan District, Ciamis Regency. The results showed that the internalization of tanbih values in realizing family happiness is carried out through various activities of TQN followers, particularly through the recitation of the tanbih text. Tanbih is understood as a guideline, reminder, and advice to avoid excessive attachment to worldly or material aspects in seeking happiness. True happiness is understood as being attainable through drawing closer to Allah SWT.
