Abstract

A Graphic Organizer (GO) is quite a creative media expresses the text concepts. It is an instructional tool that can help students to organize, structured the information and concepts to relate with the other concepts. Graphic organizers display information, structure, and key conceptual relationships using visual and spatial arrangements or maps. Graphic organizers often involve lines, arrows, text boxes or bubbles, pictures, and other visual depictions to represent ideas, facts, and concepts. The implementation of Graphic Organizer is aimed at increasing the students’ ability in writing narrative text for grade ninth at SMPN 1 Merlung. The previous learning used students’ task learning as method in learning writing which unmatched with the needs of students in facing challenging of writing text. The research was conducted to the ninth graders of SMPN 1 Merlung with total 62 students by giving treatment in control and experimental group. The data were the students’ writing in the pre-test and post-test. To count the data, the researcher used t-test and SPSS. Based on the counting, it was found that the value of t-test at the degree of freedom 60 and the level of significance 0.05 was 7.012 which is value of t-test is higher than value of t-table (7.012> 2.000). It means that the Null Hypothesis is rejected and the alternative hypothesis is accepted. Thus, it proved that there is effect of using graphic organizer on students’ writing project. Since the graphic organizer media had significant effect to the students’ writing abilities, so this media can be used as one of the alternative technique for English teacher in teaching writing narrative text.

Abstract

This research discussed the analysis of lexical meaning and contextual meaning on Harris J’s song lyrics that have related values in the Quran. The purpose of this study to describe the kinds of class of words, the lexical and contextual meaning and the Qur’an values which are presented to Harris J's song lyrics in SALAM Album. This research employed qualitative research and descriptive method because it was used to describe the contextual meaning found in song lyrics of Harris J. The writer used the contextual meaning theory by Mansoer Pateda to conduct this research. The data were taken from first album SALAM by Harris J, five songs they are Salam Alaikum, Rasool'Allah, I Promise, The One and You Are My Life. The first results showed that there are seven kinds of class of words, consisting of; noun, noun phrase, verb, verb phrase, adjective, adjective phrase and adverb. Also the writer found that noun phrase and verb are more dominantly found in song lyrics in the Album SALAM. Second, the contextual meaning in lyrics of the song had the meaning according to the context, but not all people know that contexts. From five songs by Harris J, there were fifteen words, phrases, or sentences found as the context. Third, there are twelve surah and fourteen verses in the Qur'an that the values of the verse relate to the song lyrics from Salam Album.

Abstract

The objective of this research is to describe the types, meanings and strategies of the words taboo in the SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and the objects in this research are English dialogue and Indonesian subtitles. This research employs descriptive qualitative research. The object of this research is The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water. The data of this research are all utterances spoken by nine of characters “SpongeBob, Patrick, Plankton, Mr. Krab, Seagull, Karen, Burger Beard, Sandy and Squidward”. The Spongebob Movie: Sponge Out of Water contains taboo word. The data are classified from taboo words according to Battistella theory. The meaning by using Abdul Chaer theory. Then, the strategies of translation by using Mona Baker theory. The findings of research shows that there are four types of taboo words, consisting of; 1 data of obscenity, 8 data of epithets, 2 data of vulgarity, 3 data of profanity and also the writer found that epithets data is more dominantly used by nine characters. Furthermore, there are two taboo meanings found, contextual 8 data, connotative 6 and contextual data which is more dominantly used in the movie. Finally, there are three strategies of translation found; translation by more general words 9 data, translation by cultural substitution 3 data, translation by neutral words 2 data and translation by more general words which is more dominantly used in the SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water.

Abstract

The main objectives of this research are (1) to find out what kinds of Social Status as seen in Aladdin Movie (2019). (2) to describe how the role of Social Status as seen Aladdin Movie (2019). The researcher uses Mayor Polak (1979) and Wuradji (2009) Theory. This research uses descriptive qualitative method. The finding of this research shows that the Social Status as seen in Aladdin movie: (1) there are three types of Social Status as seen Aladdin movie, they are Ascribed Status, Achieved Status and Assigned Status. Ascribed status was mostly dominant used in this movie because the background of this movie is based on a kingdom in which a monarchical government system, led by a king and throne of the kingdom will be inherited to his lineage. (2). The role of a leader is different from that of ordinary people because social status they have, the leader has an obligation to ensure the welfare and safety of the community, the leader also protects each member so that they are in accordance with the goals achieved. Different things with ordinary people they are obliged to follow the rules and respect a leader.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to develop an English textbook for students of computer science. This research used ADDIE (Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, Evaluate). The researchers followed the five steps of the research procedure to produce an English textbook. Students and lecturers were involved in this research. The materials in the book were based on students' needs and have been validated by the computer science lecturers. The product has also accommodated the four basic skills and can be used as a self-study book.

Abstract

This thesis discusses the kinds of language error found on social media of Indonesian celebrities and the factors that affect the language of Indonesian celebrities. This study is designed to find out the kinds of language error is made Indonesian celebrity used in communicating on social media and to find out the factors that influence the Indonesian celebrity language. This research uses qualitative and descriptive research method. The object of this research is Indonesian celebrities. And there are 10 Indonesia celebrties who were sampled in this study, and the researcher took 3 captions from each celebrity. The research data was taken from screenshots of Indonesian celebrity captions and videos. The way of collecting data is by using documentation. The data are classified according to the kinds of language error and factors that affect language according to Ellis & Brown's theory. In this study, the researcher found that there were 28 data that writer got from social media of Indonesian celebrities, such as Instagram and YouTube. From the 3 kinds of language error according to Ellis' theory, the researcher got 7 data from omission, the researcher got 14 data from misinformation, 1 data from misordering, and 6 data from combination of 2 kinds of error. Then the language error factor, the researcher found 6 data from the interlingual factor, 14 data from the intralingual factor, 3 data from the context of learning factor, and 5 data from combination of 2 factors of error.

Abstract

The aims of this research are: (1) To find out the types of persuasive strategies are used by Greta Thunberg in her speeches with theme climate change, (2) To describe persuasive strategies are applied by Greta Thunberg in her speeches with theme climate change. By using qualitative method, the researcher felt easy to analyze the speech and the researcher will have right answer about the question. The writer used documentation technique for collecting data. The writer used content analysis for technique of analysis. The writer found three persuasive strategies that used by Greta Thundberg Speech During Campaign With Theme Climate Change. There are : forensic rhetoric, demonstrative rhetoric, deliberative rhetoric. There are 4 forensic rhetoric , 4 demonstrative rhetoric, 11 deliberative rhetoric. The writer found all of ways that used by Greta Thundberg Speech During Campaign With Theme Climate Change. There are : Appeal to Emotion, showing evidences, personal character of the speaker. There are 5 Appeal to Emotions(ethos), 9 showing evidences(logos), 7 personal characters of the speaker.

Abstract

Racism is always an interesting topic to debate and from the movie A United Kingdom by Amma Asante. The researcher wants to feeling the racism issues and impact of racism, and to feeling the racism that faced in the main character of Seretse Khama. The researcher used qualitative descriptive method. It is suitable for this research because when people analyze it, there are many interpretations and perceptions, and the qualitative method can bind the whole differences of interpretation and perception. The researcher took the data from the dialogues that contains racism which was taken from the script and movie. There are three issues of racism. First, discrimination the act of racism is the negative treatment from white people to black people. Second, prejudice was given by white people to people of their color for no reasons. The third, segregation was given by white people to black people by a great separation between whites and blacks. three impact of racism that experienced by main character Seretse Khama. Those are: Grief, rage, and humiliation.

Abstract

This research discusses metaphor used in politics articles in the Jakarta Post online newspaper during pandemic covid-19 era. The aim of this research is to find the kind of metaphor and conceptual meaning of metaphor. The methodology used in this research is descriptive qualitative method. Sources of data iin ithis istudy iare iarticles iin i iThe iJakarta iPost ionline inewspaper, iespecially ipolitical iarticles. iData icollection iwas icarried out iby itaking iseveral iarticles ion iPolitics iin ithe iCovid-19 iPandemic iEra. This research using George Lakoof and Mark Jhonson theory for analyze kinds of metaphors, while analyzing the meaning of metaphor using Zoltan Covesces theory. The result of this research is 25 data containing all kinds of metaphor which are five data of orientational metaphor, five data of ontological metaphor, and fifteen data of structural metaphor. The meaning of metaphor is conceptual meaning, namely interpreting imetaphors iusing ithe isource iand itarget idomains, whie the most dominant metaphor is structural metaphors.

Abstract

This research is focused on social criticism in Eye of the Storm Album by One Ok Rock. The purpose of this research is to know the problems of social criticism in “Eye of the Storm” Album by One Ok Rock and the forms of of social criticism in “Eye of the Storm” Album by One Ok Rock . This research method is a qualitative method and the technique of the research is descriptive analysis to analyze the data with theory that related to the problem of the writer’s research. The data are collected from lyrics in the songs. The finding shows that there are three problems of social criticism which are social criticism in youth of modern society problem contained in the song lyrics with the title Stand Out Fit In, Giants, and Head High, social criticism in environment problem contained in the song lyrics with the title Stand Out Fit In, Change, Head High, and Giants. Then social criticism in bureaucracy problem contained in the song lyric with the title Push Back. While, there are three forms of social criticism which are unadorned criticism, symbol criticism, and cynical criticism.
