Abstract

This research discusses gender dysphoria in When the Moon Was Ours novel by Anna-Marie McLemore as reflected by the main character named Samir. Samir was born as a girl called Samira who got an uneasy feeling with his gender identity. Gender dysphoria is uneasy feeling associated with the incongruence wherein gender identity does not match one‟s biological sex. This research aims to find out the characteristics, the causes and the impacts of gender dysphoria in the novel. In this research, the writer uses the theory by the American Psychiatric Association to ensure characteristics and impacts of gender dysphoria and another theory by Susan Stryker to determine its causes. The writer also uses Queer theory as proponent in formulating problems. Kind of research is library research with descriptive qualitative methods. Source of data of the research is a novel, several sources of journal, books and articles related to this thesis. Research findings shows that first, gender dysphoria characteristics experienced by main character tends to inconsistency between sex and gender identity, a desire to erase the primary or secondary sex characteristics, a desire to have primary or secondary sex characteristics of the other gender, a desire to be a figure of the other gender, a desire to be treated as the other gender and a desire to have typical feeling as the other gender. The second, causes of gender dysphoria is due to social and cultural factors, it contains a Pakistani tradition called Bacha Posh and the emotional dynamics he had in his family.The last, the impacts of gender dyphoria are anxiety disorder, suicide attempts, functioning at school may disturbed, stigmatization, discrimination and tends to get negative self-concept.

Abstract

This study analyzes the values ​​contained in the novel entitled "Anna Karenina". Where in the novel contains the elements of values ​​that are analyzed are individual values ​​and social values. The aims of this research are (1) to analyze what individual values ​​are contained in the novel “Anna Karenina” (2) to analyze what social values ​​are contained in the novel “Anna Karenina” (3) to compare the values individual and social values ​​contained in the novel "Anna Karenina". Researchers uses descriptive analysis method in conducting this research. The researcher uses a qualitative research method design as a research design. In this research, the researcher uses the theory of sociology of literature, the theory of individual values ​​and social values. The source of the data in this study is the novel "Anna Karenina" in 1877 by Leo Tolstoy. From the results of this research, based on the theory of Individual Basic Values ​​from Schwartz, the researcher found 10 individual values ​​owned by the Anna Karenina’s character, based on the characteristics put according by Durkehim, the researcher found social values, then the researchers found a comparison of individual values ​​to social values, including comparisons power values ​​with social values, hedonism values ​​with social values, and a comparison of self-direction values ​​with social values.

Abstract

Since the technology development educators should consider this to be a value for educational purposes. This study attempts to investigate the students’ perceptions and students’ expectations on the use of ICT in English learning. The writer sees a need to carry out this study as it provides a platform to discover pedagogical implications that would benefit the Y-generation in terms of using ICTs as media in their English learning. The respondents of this research comprise 20-second year students completing their bachelor’s degree in English literature faculty, The State Institute for Islamic Studies (IAIN) Sultan Thaha Syaifuddin Jambi, Sumatra, Indonesia. The students’ perceptions and students’ expectations were measured through a questionnaire. The questionnaire aims to find out about college students’ perception and expectations of computer technology use in English learning. There are three parts of questionnaire; Part one found present English learning and teaching situation in their institute and divided into computer facilities in their institutes, present their English learning situation, and students use of ICT in their daily life. Part two found students’ perceptions of the use of ICT in English learning, and Part three found students’ expectations of the use of ICT in English learning. The findings showed that respondents agree that ICT is useful for English learning especially for the item ‘computer can serve as tools for learning purposes’. And respondents generally agree to the statements which lead to the point that ICT can be expected to help respondents’ in English learning especially for the item ‘I need teachers/experienced people to teach me how to use online learning resources’, ‘I hope computers can be used to provide more interactive activities for students’, and ‘I hope the use of ICT will help me to learn English more efficiently’. The results of this study may be beneficial to EFL educators in incorporating ICT into their teaching repertoire.

Abstract

The purpose in the research to find evidence of whether the use of Hello English (HE) as a medium of instruction in the classroom has a significant impact on students' vocabulary skills in EFL classes. This study uses a qualitative design. To collect data, researchers used questionnaires that have been distributed. The respondent in this research 25 students EFL classroom. Researcher found Hello English to be of interest to students because it can be accessed from smartphones. and using Hello English for smartphone-based learning, students no longer need to carry heavy dictionaries and can more easily learn new words by accessing the Hello English dictionary. The researcher conclude applying Hello English to the EFL classroom makes students interested in learning and more positively responsive to teachers, the second teachers believe that learning with smartphones will increase students' interest in learning. The last student can get used to speaking in English and practice your pronunciation. Students realize how important vocabulary is to understanding conversations

Abstract

This study discusses about the Illocutionary Act of Joe Biden Speech War between Rusia and Ukraine. The purposed of this study were to explain the types of illocutionary applied by Joe Biden in his speech. This study used a pragmatic approach from Leech (1989), Illocutionary Act from Searle (1999),and Leech (1993). The method used qualitative descriptive method to analyzed the data, the researcher used vidio and the script to collect the data, source of data was take from Joe Biden speech video. The findings of this study showed that (1) Joe Biden used five kinds of illocutionary act , they are Declarative, Directive, Expressive, Representative, and Commisive. Then, (2) there four function of illocutionary Act used by Joe Biden speech war, they are, Competitive, Collaborative, Convivial, and Conflictive

Abstract

This study discusses Schizophrenia of the Main Character In The Novel Words On Bathroom Walls by Julia Walton. The researcher chose this title to provide further information to readers and especially in the English literature department about Schizophrenia. The purpose of this study is to find and explain the first, the types of schizophrenia that exist in the main character Adam Petrazelli, the second the symptoms of schizophrenia, and the third way of treating schizophrenia. Researchers used three theories. The first theory is about the types of schizophrenia presented by the American Psychiatric Association, the second theory is conveyed by Keliat which explains the symptoms of schizophrenia, and the third theory by Ross Willson explains the treatment of Schizophrenia. This type of research uses descriptive qualitative research. sources of data in this study were all conversations spoken by all characters in the novel "Words On Bathroom Walls By Julia Walton" containing sentences related to schizophrenia. The data collection technique used was documentation. The results of this research indicate that: from the types of schizophrenia there is one that has been found, namely Paranoid Type which has been analyzed, the researcher only managed to find one symptoms namely positive symptoms and in these positive symptoms there are two characteristics found by the researcher (Hallucination and Behavior Change), there are two ways to cure schizophrenia Medical Intervention and Psychosocial Intervention.

Abstract

This study is aimed to investigate the factors that contribute in speaking anxiety that experienced by the fifth semester students and the type of speaking anxiety in order to get the broader understanding about this phenomenon. This research is categorized as descriptive qualitative research. It involved the fifth semester students of English Literature Department 2022-2023 academic year as the participants. The data was collected through the interview. The findings of the research describe four factors that contribute in speaking anxiety and three types of anxiety. There were four factors based on Horwitz and Cope (1986) theory, the first factor is fear of negative evaluation (unconfident and overthinking) which made the student avoid do public speaking in English. Students were afraid because their mentality. The second is test anxiety (fear of performance in front of audience) which made the student avoid and afraid do the public speaking English. The third is communication apprehension (low speaking skill) which commonly happened on lack of vocabulary and unable to arrange the sentence and also stag in their mind. The fourth is new material which commonly happened on lack of understanding of new material. There were three types based on Horwitz (1986) theory, the first type of anxiety was trait anxiety it happened related when students fell unconfident and overthinking. The second type of anxiety was state anxiety. It happened relate on external factor and when someone feels being threatened. The third type was situation-specific anxiety. Due to low speaking skill seems like the students were afraid of being evaluated.

Abstract

This study analyzes the fulfillment of human needs and the conflicts in fulfilling these needs by the main character in the film Turning Red by Domee Shi. The purpose of this study is to explain how the main character fulfills human needs and to find out the conflicts that occur in fulfilling human needs seen by the main character in the film Turning Red by Domee Shi. Researcher used a psychological approach. Researcher used a qualitative descriptive method. Sources of data in this study are scripts, images and dialogue from the film Turning Red by Domee Shi. In collecting data, researcher used documentation techniques. Then the data were analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the analysis in this study indicate that researcher found five levels of human needs using Abraham Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory, namely physiological needs, safety needs, love and belonging needs, self-esteem needs, and self-actualization needs. This study shows that human needs have been fulfilled by the main character in the film Turning Red by Domee Shi. Then, the researcher found three conflicts in fulfilling human needs, especially at the level of self-esteem and self-actualization using Kurt Lewin's conflict theory, namely approach-approach conflict, avoidance-avoidance conflict, and approach-avoidance conflict. This study shows that the main character has resolved conflicts in fulfilling human needs, especially at the level of self-esteem and self-actualization in the film Turning Red by Domee Shi.

Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out whether there is a significant effect on teaching strategies using short learning videos accompanied by posters during the pandemic in online classes to improve student learning outcomes. The research subjects were 12 classes of grade XI OTKP students. The method used in this classroom action research is descriptive qualitative, and uses associative problem formulation. The results of the research show that problems in learning can be well handled gradually. The use of short learning videos accompanied by posters during the pandemic in online classes can significantly improve students’ learning outcomes including speaking skills and can increase student activity in learning. This is clearly proven by the comparison of the analysis results in cycle I and cycle II. In cycle I, the individual absorption capacity of each student was 62.08%, with mastery in learning 75%. The results in cycle 2 of completion were achieved by all students with the individual absorption capacity of a student being 80.00% and the classical absorption capacity being 100.00%. This is clearly visible in the absorption capacity of each individual student and can be said to be classically complete. Meanwhile, the level of students' speaking ability consisted of 3 students who are in the excellent category, 6 students who are in the very good category, 3 students in the good category, and student activity increased from 75% to 90%.

Abstract

This study analyze the struggle of a Person with Tourette syndrome for being a teacher in “Front of The Class” movie by Peter Werner. The aims of this research are to identify the characteristics of a Person with Tourette syndrome and the kinds of struggle used by a Person with Tourette syndrome as seen in ―Front of The Class‖ movie by Peter Werner. This research also used James Leckman et al, American Psychiatric Association and Stephen Harrison theory to find the result of the research. Researcher used descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data in this study is “Front of The Class” Movie by Peter Werner. In the data collection, the researcher used documentation technique. Then, the data were analyzed used descriptive analysis. From the results of this research, the researcher found three of physical characteristics represented of a Person with Tourette syndrome by Brad Cohen, there are the presence of tics, tics appear between 5 or 6 years of age, and repeated tics for at least one year. The researcher also found two of the mental characteristic represented by Brad Cohen, there are hard to concentrate, demonstrate disruptive behavior (impolite) and difficulty in interpersonal relationships. Then, the researcher found two kinds of struggle used by Brad Cohen, internal struggle and external struggle. Internal struggle are Brad holding tics to study, Brad tries to convince recruiter and register to be a teacher in various school. External struggle are struggle from Brad‘s family and struggle from Brad's principal (Mr. Myer).
