Abstract

Achieving reliable, affordable, and sustainable electricity access remains a critical challenge for power systems in West Africa. Although the region possesses abundant renewable energy resources, fragmented national planning and limited cross-border transmission interconnections continue to restrict optimal resource utilization. This study investigates the technical, economic, and institutional implications of cross-border renewable power integration within the ECOWAS regional power system. Power system modeling was conducted using the PyPSA platform, representing a 14-bus regional network simulated over a full annual operating cycle with high-resolution demand and generation profiles. Three operational scenarios were assessed: Business-as-Usual, private-led Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), and Coordinated Regional Integration. System performance was evaluated using system marginal costs, renewable energy penetration, transmission utilization, and reliability indices. The results indicate that the Coordinated Integration scenario significantly outperforms the other scenarios, achieving up to a 36% reduction in average system marginal costs, renewable energy penetration exceeding 60%, and improved grid reliability through enhanced load balancing and reserve-sharing mechanisms. In contrast, the Business-as-Usual and PPA-based scenarios exhibit lower performance due to inefficient transmission utilization and institutional fragmentation. The findings highlight that infrastructure expansion alone is insufficient to ensure optimal regional power system performance. Effective integration requires harmonized operational standards, consistent regulatory frameworks, and strengthened regional institutions. Enhancing the roles of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) and the ECOWAS Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (ECREEE), supported by performance-based regional investment mechanisms, is essential to unlock the full benefits of cross-border energy cooperation. This study provides a technically grounded and policy-relevant framework to accelerate energy transition, improve power system resilience, and foster economic integration across West Africa.

Abstract

Pulau Semut is a tourist destination managed by a community-based tourism awareness group. The group collaborates to develop and improve the tourism site in order to ensure visitor safety and comfort. As Pulau Semut has become increasingly popular and attracts more visitors, the availability of adequate parking facilities has become an important issue. Currently, parking areas utilize vacant land without proper planning, and visitors tend to park near their activity locations. Therefore, every tourism destination needs to provide well-organized and sufficient parking facilities. Due to limited resources in parking area planning, the community partner required technical assistance to optimize the available land for parking purposes. The implementation method included field surveys, identification of existing conditions, and focused discussions. The result of this activity was a parking area plan located beside the entrance ticket post, using paving block materials while preserving existing trees within the parking area. This activity supports the improvement of tourism supporting infrastructure, and the addition of a designated parking area is expected to enhance visitor comfort and overall tourism service quality.

Abstract

During the rainy season or under heavy rainfall events, roads in Purwodinatan Subdistrict, Semarang City, frequently experience water ponding. This condition disrupts community activities and other road users. Insufficient drainage capacity to accommodate rainfall volume, along with inadequate drainage maintenance that leads to sedimentation, contributes to surface runoff and water inundation. These conditions require further mitigation measures to control surface runoff and shorten the drainage recession time. Therefore, the planning of infiltration wells is proposed as an alternative solution to address this problem. The implementation method adopted in this study consists of a literature review related to the design dimensions of infiltration wells, followed by the calculation of the Bill of Quantities (BoQ). The planning conducted represents a preliminary approach and is solely based on a literature review of infiltration well design, without involving detailed technical analyses of infiltration well capacity. Based on the BoQ calculation, a cost of IDR 6,462,954.92 is required to construct one infiltration well along the Bubakan Baru Street segment, where 9 infiltrations well locations are identified within a single road segment. The final outputs of this activity include a map of proposed infiltration well locations and the BoQ calculation to be submitted to the subdistrict authority. This activity serves as a preliminary planning stage to assist the community in estimating the dimensions, number of locations, and cost of infiltration wells.
