Abstract

Technology plays an important role in learning, including in the field of text translation in higher education. This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Duolingo application in improving the ability of third-semester students of University of Katolik Santo Agustinus Hippo in helping to translate narrative texts from Indonesian to English. The method used was a pre-experiment with a pre-test and post-test design. The research sample consisted of 25 students selected using the cluster random sampling technique. Data were collected through a translation test and analyzed using the T test on the SPSS application. The results showed a significant increase in the average score from the pre-test 58.60 to the post-test 78.80. The T test produced a value of 57.52, greater than the T table value of 2.064, which proves the effectiveness of the Duolingo application. This application helps students understand sentence structure, expand vocabulary, and recognize cultural contexts in the target language. The conclusion of this study is that the use of Duolingo can significantly help improve students' translation skills. It is recommended to integrate this application as a routine learning medium, especially in developing translation skills.

Abstract

This study explores the mastery of the simple present and present progressive tenses among second-semester Counseling Guidance students at Universitas Prof. Dr. Hazairin, SH, Bengkulu. The purpose of the study is to assess students ability to use these tenses correctly in both written and spoken forms. A mixed-methods approach was employed, consisting of a grammar test to evaluate students' written proficiency and structured interviews to assess their spoken usage. The results revealed that while students showed relatively high proficiency in using the simple present tense, their performance with the present progressive tense was weaker. Common errors identified included confusion between the two tenses, omission of auxiliary verbs, and incorrect verb forms. These findings suggest that students have a solid grasp of the simple present tense but face difficulties with the present progressive tense, largely due to the absence of similar tense forms in their native language. The study concludes that targeted grammar instruction, particularly focused on the present progressive tense, is essential. It also recommends incorporating task-based learning and form-focused instruction to enhance grammatical accuracy. The findings offer valuable insights into tense acquisition among Indonesian EFL learners and have implications for improving English grammar teaching practices at the university level.

Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic has posed many challenges to education delivery, especially in rural areas. This study aims to analyze the perceptions and experiences of students in rural areas using TikTok and YouTube as learning media during and after the pandemic. This research uses mixed methods (quantitative and qualitative). The results show that students in rural areas face internet access constraints and low learning motivation. However, they are interested in using TikTok and YouTube, which are considered interactive and easily accessible materials. This study concludes that both digital platforms can potentially overcome the academic backwardness of students in post-pandemic rural areas. Specifically, quantitative data collected through closed questionnaires revealed that most students in rural areas rely on unstable mobile internet and devices, resulting in poor connectivity. The qualitative, open-ended questionnaire highlighted decreased motivation and increased stress among about half of the respondents. Despite the decrease in motivation, the students remained enthusiastic about using TikTok and YouTube for self-directed learning. They found the platforms engaging, flexible, and enabled discussion with peers. This study suggests that increasing the interactive capacity of these digital tools could promote effective online education for underserved groups, reducing the pandemic gap.

Abstract

Reading skills are crucial for elementary school students, especially in English learning. Students can understand the text if they have good reading skills. Therefore, teachers should provide appropriate strategies to improve students' reading skills. The purpose of this study was to find out what strategies English teachers used in improving students' reading skills in a private elementary school in Ngabang. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. This research was conducted at SDS Alfa Omega Ngabang. The subjects in this study were two English teachers who taught in class 5. The data collection instruments in this study used observation and interview. Data analysis used data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The results showed that there were five strategies used by English teachers: previewing text, guessing word meaning, skimming, scanning, and reading aloud. The reading aloud strategy is the most frequently used strategy by teachers at SDS Alfa Omega Ngabang because teachers feel that this strategy can train students' pronunciation, make students active, and increase students' motivation and interest in reading. It is suggested that teachers can choose strategies for teaching reading skills based on the students' ability level and education level.
