Abstract

This study aims to examine the strengthening of character education based on tradition at Pesantren An-Nuqthah. As a traditional Islamic educational institution, pesantren plays an essential role in shaping students' character through long-standing traditions. Values such as respecting teachers (ta'dzim), discipline in worship, and simple communal living form the foundation for character development. This research employs a qualitative case study approach, using in-depth interviews with teachers and students. The findings reveal that pesantren traditions effectively build students' noble character. However, challenges from modernization and the use of technology, especially social media, affect students' focus on character education. Nonetheless, the pesantren strives to stay relevant by balancing traditional values with the wise use of technology. This research is expected to provide insights into strengthening character education for students in the modern era.

Abstract

This study examines the lifestyle changes of Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) in East Lombok Regency before and after working abroad. Using a qualitative approach and a case study design, data were collected through interviews and observations with five informants. The findings indicate that unstable economic conditions are the main reason PMIs decide to work overseas. Before departure, they generally worked in the informal sector with incomes sufficient only for basic needs. After working abroad, there was a significant economic improvement, enabling PMIs to save, purchase assets such as land or houses, and meet tertiary needs. Although their lifestyle has not drastically changed, PMIs feel more capable of planning a better future. The study also reveals that communication technology helps maintain relationships with family members back home. These findings provide insights into the dynamics of PMIs’ lives, particularly regarding their economic, social, and psychological well-being.

Abstract

Traditional houses represent a cultural identity rich in local values and ecological wisdom. However, in the midst of modernisation, its existence faces various challenges, such as the pressure of urbanisation, changes in lifestyle, and the lack of understanding of the younger generation. This research aims to explore the physical transformation and function of traditional houses and their sustainability factors in the contemporary era. Using a qualitative method with a descriptive approach, the research was conducted through observation, interviews, and literature study. The results show that traditional houses retain their architectural authenticity despite experiencing adaptations to modern needs, such as the addition of new facilities. The most significant sustainability factors include the role of local communities, government policy support, and adaptation of relevant technology. Traditional houses are also important symbols in maintaining the community's collective memory and centres of social activity. To ensure their preservation, synergy between the community, government and academia is needed to create sustainable policies. By integrating traditional elements into modern designs, traditional houses can remain relevant without losing their cultural value.

Abstract

The word ngabuburit is interpreted as relaxing while waiting for the afternoon in the fasting month. Along with the times, the ngabuburit tradition slowly changed, although not significantly. The values of togetherness and simplicity that used to be the core of ngabuburit are slowly fading, displaced by the dominance of digital devices that make social interaction increasingly distanced. This research aims to explain the factors that affect the development of the ngabuburit tradition in the modern era. This study uses a type of descriptive qualitative research. Descriptive qualitative research aims to describe and understand the phenomenon that is researched in depth based on the perspective of the respondents. This research also seeks to explore the social and cultural meaning behind ngabuburit activities in the context of today's young generation. This study presents the latest data and reveals the activities of the younger generation in spending time before breaking the fast or ngabuburit. Different from previous research that discussed more traditional ngabuburit, this study focuses on trends and changes in ngabuburit patterns that emerge among the younger generation during Ramadan. From the results of a survey involving 50 respondents aged 18-21 years, it was found that the most common ngabuburit activities carried out by the younger generation still revolve around walking, and snacks. Even so, there are also those who prefer to spend time at home relaxing or sleeping. When asked about the importance of ngabuburit in undergoing fasting, respondents' responses were quite diverse. Some consider ngabuburit to be an important part of living Ramadan because it helps to divert hunger and maintain mental balance. Meanwhile, others feel that ngabuburit is just an additional activity that does not have much effect on the essence of fasting itself. In the conclusion, the researcher stated that the essence of the ngabuburit activity itself remains the same, namely to be an important moment to refresh the mind and be a self-balancing from daily busyness during fasting.
