Abstract

This research is motivated by the numerous signs, symbols, and meanings contained in Salman Aristo's film Bumi Manusia, which represent the social, cultural, and historical realities of the colonial era. This study aims to describe Roland Barthes's five codes: hermeneutic, proairetic, semitic, symbolic, and cultural codes in Bumi Manusia. The study used a descriptive qualitative approach with Roland Barthes's semiotic theory. Data in the form of dialogue, scenes, character expressions, and visual elements containing signs were collected through documentation techniques and analyzed using the concept of lexia and Barthes's five codes. The results show that all five of Roland Barthes's codes are found in Bumi Manusia and mutually construct the narrative's meaning structure. The hermeneutic code builds the story's puzzle, the proairetic code drives the sequence of actions, the semitic code strengthens the character's characterization, the symbolic code represents the conflicting values ​​and power, while the cultural code presents historical, cultural, and social system references during the colonial era. These findings indicate that Bumi Manusia is an audiovisual work rich in sign systems and capable of representing meaning in depth through Roland Barthes's five semiotic codes.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the text structure of news coverage on the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) Program published by the online media outlets CNN Indonesia, Tempo.co, and Detikcom using Teun A. Van Dijk's discourse analysis model. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach by analyzing the macrostructure, superstructure, and microstructure of the news texts. The findings indicate that all three media outlets focus on the same theme, namely President Prabowo Subianto's response to the rejection of the MBG Program, but differ in the way they construct the news. CNN Indonesia emphasizes the urgency of the MBG Program as a solution to food security issues, Tempo.co highlights the social dynamics and the program's objective of supporting disadvantaged communities, while Detikcom emphasizes the President's defense of the MBG Program as a priority public policy. These findings indicate that each media outlet employs different strategies in presenting information according to its editorial characteristics.

Abstract

English proficiency plays a significant role in preparing business students for academic success and future professional communication. However, many students continue to encounter challenges in learning English, particularly within business-related contexts. This study aimed to explore and analyze the English learning difficulties experienced by business students at STIE Gema Widya Bangsa and to identify the linguistic, affective, pedagogical, and contextual factors contributing to these difficulties. The study employed an exploratory qualitative case-study design involving fifteen Management and Accounting students selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and document analysis and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings revealed three major themes: students perceived English as a difficult foreign language, experienced limited speaking ability due to insufficient opportunities for meaningful practice, and demonstrated limited understanding of TOEFL materials despite showing strong motivation to improve. The results indicate that students’ learning difficulties are shaped by the interaction of limited vocabulary and business terminology, low confidence, inadequate exposure to English, and limited speaking practice. The study implies that Business English instruction should emphasize communicative learning, contextualized business vocabulary, regular speaking activities, and structured TOEFL preparation to enhance students’ academic achievement, workplace readiness, and overall English proficiency.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the role of Educandy as a digital learning medium in improving the learning achievement of fourth-grade students in Integrated Science and Social Studies (IPAS) at SD Negeri 59 Lubuk Linggau. This research employed a quantitative approach with a true experimental design. The research subjects consisted of all fourth-grade students who were divided into an experimental group using Educandy and a control group receiving conventional instruction. Data were collected through multiple-choice tests administered before and after the treatment. The instruments were tested for validity and reliability before use. The pretest results showed relatively similar initial abilities, with average scores of 41.17 for the experimental group and 42.11 for the control group. After the treatment, the experimental group achieved an average posttest score of 80.63, while the control group reached 69.68. Normality, homogeneity, and independent-samples t-tests were conducted to analyze the data. The results showed a statistically significant difference between the two groups, indicating that Educandy positively contributed to students’ learning achievement. Therefore, Educandy can be considered an effective digital learning medium to support interactive and engaging IPAS learning for fourth-grade elementary school students.
