Abstract

The differences in qira'at al-Qur'an have become a primary object of debate if they are not understood thoroughly. This is because these differences have been present since the Prophet Muhammad lived. Sourced from the Prophet, Muhammad then narrated by the companions to the tabi'in and continued to the Muslims from generation to generation. The inevitable difference does not symbolize the inconsistency of the Qur'anic verse, but on the contrary, is the elasticity of the Qur'anic text in response to differences in the lahjah of the Arab tribes. Thus, no one tries to unite the recitation of the Qur'an in one qirā'at. Even these differences are accepted, with a tolerant and airy attitude. This was later reviewed by the Imams of qirā'at who highlighted the differences in qirā'atqirā'at. One of these is Imam Al-Kisa'i. Imam Al-Kisa'i was one of the imams of qirā'at sab'ah who came from Kufa. Even though Al-Kisa'i has a mutawatir sanad of knowledge, he does not avoid being selective about his teacher's reading. The author used qualitative research. The result of his research is that the differences in qira'at brought by Imam Al-Kisa'i all do not have differences in meaning that deviate from the real meaning of the verse. Examples found in several verses of the Qur'an include: QS (2):144, QS (2):208, QS (2):222, QS (3):19, QS (3):161, QS (3):195, QS (5):45, QS (4):19, QS (5):112, QS (6):159, QS (11):46, QS (74):5, QS (6):111, QS (33):33. Contribution: This study affirms the flexibility of Qur'anic qira'at, the role of Imam Al-Kisa'i, and the importance of tolerance in recitation differences.

Abstract

Research on the Qur'anic strategy in realizing couple harmony needs to be conducted to describe the understanding of the Qur'an in the early days of development with the facts that occur today. The purpose of this study is to present an understanding of the Qur'an that is in accordance with the current context. Knowing the tafsir method offered by Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi about the importance of caring for and maintaining couple relationships. The method used in this study is based on a literature method. This study found that harmony is the main goal of marriage. To realize harmony, several alternatives and solutions are needed for husband-and-wife couples. Surah al-Ahzab verse 28 tells about the challenge of the Prophet Muhammad in dealing with internal family problems. The success of Prophet Muhammad in solving these problems can be used as an alternative to solving the problems faced by every couple. Contribution: This study adapts Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi's interpretation to offer Qur’anic solutions for marital harmony.

Abstract

This scientific article discusses the analysis of human characteristics in the Qur'an through a comparative study between two interpretations of Al-Mishbah and Ibn Kathir. The research method used was a descriptive qualitative analysis with a comparative approach. The purpose of this study was to gain a deeper understanding of human characteristics in the Qur'an, as well as the differences and similarities between the two selected commentaries. The results show that both commentaries have the same view of human characteristics as weak creatures, and are often tempted by lust. However, there are differences in the emphasis between Al-Mishbah and Ibn Kathir in highlighting human traits related to faith, such as devotion, patience, and sincerity. In addition, this study also found that human characteristics in the Qur'an show that humans have a tendency to follow the truth and goodness, but also have the potential to be evil and harm themselves and others. This article can make an important contribution to the development of the understanding of human beings in the Qur'ānic perspective, as well as provide a broader and more detailed view of two well-known commentaries in the Islamic world. Contribution: This study enriches tafsir studies by comparing Al-Mishbah and Ibn Kathir in understanding human characteristics in the Qur'an.

Abstract

This research intends to reveal the logical side of understanding God, from two great Prophets, Ibrahim and Musa through their stories in the Qur'an. This is because one of the elements of the Qur'anic mu'jizat, is a logical narrative that often appears in the dialogue of the prophets. Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Musa, were sent to a people who were smart enough to argue regarding their own misguidance. Both faced similar problems: facing idolaters and unjust rulers. In terms of requests to Allah, both even asked for almost the same thing: Prophet Ibrahim asked his descendants to be granted prophethood. Prophet Musa, asked that his brother be appointed Prophet. Both of them, at the level of trying to understand the Power of God itself: Prophet Ibrahim asked God about bringing the dead back to life; Prophet Moses asked about the knowledge that Prophet Khidir possessed. Methodically, this article is a literature study with a narrative approach to the same theme found in the stories of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Moses. This study concludes that there are at least two things in which both logically refute idolaters and rulers through narratives that are neatly recorded in the Qur'an. It also logically shows human aspects of kinship and curiosity. Contribution: This research reveals the logical approach in the Qur'anic narrative through the stories of Prophet Ibrahim and Prophet Musa in understanding divinity.

Abstract

The story of Prophet Ibrahim is one of the most frequently told stories in the Qur'an. This article aims to analyze Gabriel Said Reynolds' interpretation that highlights the aspect of Prophet Ibrahim's wife's laughter found in the Qur'an. This study uses a qualitative approach to the literature review type. This study found that1) Reynolds shows that the laughter of Prophet Abraham's wife, Siti Sarah, can be understood in two ways: as an expression of joy or astonishment. From Reynolds’s perspective, laughter also shows Sarah's disbelief in the good news delivered by the angels. Reynolds offers an interpretation that differs from the perspectives of most Islamic scholars. Reynolds is a linguist and historian of Christianity, so he provides an outsider's view of the Qur'ān. Nevertheless, Reynolds’s interpretation still provides an interesting insight into the story of Prophet Abraham and how interpretations can vary depending on the perspective used. 2) The story of Prophet Abraham shows the importance of trust in and loyalty to God. However, through Reynolds’s interpretation, we can also understand that trust itself can sometimes be questioned and understood in different ways. In this case, the laughter of Prophet Ibrahim's wife reminds us that trust in God can be expressed in many ways, including through expressions of joy or disbelief. Contribution: This study enriches Qur'anic interpretation by showing that Sarah's laughter has diverse meanings based on linguistic and historical perspectives.

Abstract

This study examines the practice of Shalawat within the cultural context of the Nusantara through an analysis of Surah al-Ahzab verse 56. Shalawat, as a form of praise for Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is deeply embedded in the religious life of Muslim communities worldwide, including in the Nusantara region. The interpretation of Surah al-Ahzab verse 56 serves as a fundamental reference in understanding the significance of Shalawat in Islam. Employing a methodological approach that combines literature analysis, cultural context understanding, and a review of both classical and contemporary interpretations, this study explores the Quranic interpretation of Shalawat from theological (aqidah), jurisprudential (fiqh), and Sufi (tasawuf) perspectives. Furthermore, this research investigates the operationalization and implications of Shalawat practices in Indonesia, considering their ideological, traditional, and spiritual dimensions. The findings reveal that Shalawat in the Nusantara manifests in diverse forms, both theoretically and pragmatically, in alignment with the Quranic command. By analyzing Surah al-Ahzab verse 56 through three distinct scholarly perspectives, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of Shalawat in Nusantara culture. Ultimately, this research highlights the role of Quranic interpretation in shaping the perception and practice of Shalawat, reinforcing its relevance within the Indonesian cultural and religious landscape. Contribution: This study contributes to the understanding of Shalawat in Nusantara culture by demonstrating how Quranic interpretation, through theological, jurisprudential, and Sufi perspectives, shapes its practice and significance within the Indonesian religious landscape.

Abstract

The Quran was revealed in Arabic, chosen as the exclusive language to convey its divine message. However, the Arabic used in the Quran encompasses multiple dialects and pronunciations, reflecting its revelation in seven modes (ahruf), which facilitated comprehension for non-Arab readers. This study aims to analyze the influence of Qiraat diversity on Quranic interpretation, with a particular focus on the Qiraat of Imam Hamzah. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a library research approach, gathering data from classical and contemporary sources. By systematically examining the linguistic and grammatical aspects of Imam Hamzah’s Qiraat, this study highlights its distinctive characteristics compared to other Qiraat, including variations in i‘rab, root words, syntax, and pronunciation. The findings reveal that Imam Hamzah’s Qiraat significantly contributes to the interpretation of Quranic verses, particularly those concerning legal provisions (ayat ahkam). While some of his readings are unique, others align closely with the Qiraat of Al-Kisai or Abu Bakr from ‘Asim. These variations offer deeper insights into the flexibility and richness of Quranic recitation and its interpretive impact.Theoretically, this study underscores the role of Qiraat in shaping legal and theological exegesis, demonstrating how phonetic and grammatical nuances influence meaning. It contributes to Quranic studies by providing a comprehensive analysis of Imam Hamzah’s Qiraat and its implications for the understanding of Islamic jurisprudence and linguistic diversity in the Quran. Contribution: This study contributes to Quranic studies by demonstrating how Imam Hamzah’s Qiraat influences legal interpretation and linguistic diversity, enriching scholarly discourse on the interplay between recitation and exegesis.

Abstract

Variations in Qur'anic interpretation are complex phenomena influenced by multiple factors, one of which is the diversity of Qira’at (recitations). Among the prominent figures in Qira’at studies is Ibn Kathir al-Makki, whose recitation was transmitted through two primary narrators, Qunbul and al-Bazzi. This study aims to examine the distinctive characteristics of Ibn Kathir al-Makki’s Qira’at and analyze its impact on Qur'anic interpretation, particularly through the narrations of Qunbul and al-Bazzi. This research employs a qualitative approach with a library research method, gathering data from classical and contemporary sources. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to systematically describe and re-examine the influence of Qira’at variations on Qur'anic exegesis. The findings reveal that while Qira’at plays a crucial role in shaping Qur'anic interpretation, not all variations in recitation lead to significant differences in meaning. Some differences in Qira’at impact theological, legal, and linguistic interpretations, while others remain within the bounds of phonetic variation without altering core meanings. This highlights the intricate nature of Qur'anic interpretation and the necessity of considering broader linguistic, contextual, and historical factors in exegetical studies. Theoretically, this study underscores the importance of Qira’at in the development of Qur'anic hermeneutics and the methodology of tafsir. Its contribution lies in providing a deeper understanding of how Ibn Kathir al-Makki’s Qira’at, as transmitted by Qunbul and al-Bazzi, influences Qur'anic interpretation, thereby enriching scholarly discourse on the intersection between recitation and exegesis. Contribution: This study contributes to Qur'anic studies by demonstrating the nuanced relationship between Qira’at and interpretation, particularly in Ibn Kathir al-Makki’s recitation, highlighting its selective yet significant impact on exegetical discourse.

Abstract

This study examines the linguistic concept of Al-Taqdim wa al-Ta’khir in Qur’anic interpretation, focusing on its influence on meaning construction. Al-Taqdim wa al-Ta’khir are fundamental principles in Arabic syntax that affect the arrangement of words in a sentence, where Al-Taqdim refers to advancing a word in order, and Al-Ta’khir refers to delaying it. These principles play a crucial role in shaping the meaning of Qur’anic verses and influencing exegetical interpretations. The study aims to analyze how Al-Taqdim wa al-Ta’khir functions in Qur’anic exegesis and how it assists mufassirs (exegetes) in navigating linguistic complexities within the sacred text. This research employs a qualitative library-based method with a descriptive-analytic approach. The study is conducted in two stages: a deductive phase, where existing literature on Al-Taqdim wa al-Ta’khir is examined broadly, and an inductive phase, where relevant examples from Qur’anic verses are analyzed to determine the interpretive effects of word order shifts. The findings indicate that Al-Taqdim wa al-Ta’khir significantly impacts both memorization and meaning in Qur’anic exegesis. Word order changes can either enhance rhetorical beauty and clarity or create ambiguity if not carefully interpreted within linguistic constraints. Theoretically, this study underscores the necessity of integrating linguistic analysis into Qur’anic interpretation to ensure precise meaning extraction. Contribution: this research highlights the role of Arabic syntactic principles in shaping Islamic hermeneutics and provides a methodological framework for analyzing linguistic structures in Qur’anic studies.
