Abstract

This article examines the issue of radicalism in Pakistan, often identified as the "Land of Ali Jinnah," reflecting the values and vision of its founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah. Radicalism has been a deep-seated issue in Pakistan, with debates over whether religious or group factors play a more critical role in strengthening radical movements in the country. This article examines the historical development of radicalism in Pakistan, analyzes the factors that influence the spread of radical ideology, and considers the implications of this view on regional and global stability. Through a comprehensive analytical approach, it explores the role of religion as a central element in radicalism in Pakistan, highlighting the role of incorrect or extreme religious understandings in motivating individuals to engage in radical activity. It also examines how group factors such as economic inequality, political discontent and ethnic tensions are essential in strengthening radical movements in Pakistan. The result is that some extremist thinking is based on some of the conservative madrassa education curricula, and some people who lack access to education are, therefore, easily duped and pitted by vested interests. The importance of understanding the balance between religion and group factors in the context of radicalism in Pakistan is that prevention and countermeasures can be more effective. This investigation provides greater insight into the complexity of the issue. It provides a basis for formulating better strategies to address radicalism in the country, which will positively impact regional and global peace and stability. Contribution: This study contributes to a deeper understanding of radicalism in Pakistan by highlighting the interplay between extreme religious interpretations and socio-political conditions, providing a foundation for more effective counter-radicalism strategies.

Abstract

Abstract

This article examines the reinterpretation of verses depicting the "Parable of the Deeds of Disbelievers," focusing on the maqasid-based exegesis approach adopted by Ibn 'Ashur. The study emphasizes the importance of understanding the verses of al-tamthil in the Qur'an, which can be analyzed through various approaches, including linguistic methods such as rhetoric (balaghah), syntax (nahwu), and morphology (sharaf), as well as philosophical approaches like semantics and semiotics. However, this research specifically utilizes the maqasid approach to uncover the deeper objectives and meanings of these verses. This approach has been a subject of academic debate and criticism, highlighting the need for more in-depth studies. This research is a literature review that focuses on a textual analysis, drawing primarily on Ibn 'Ashur's Tafsir al-Tahrir wa al-Tanwir as its main source. The findings reveal that the maqasid approach to the verses of al-tamthil depicting the deeds of disbelievers successfully identifies two primary objectives: "li at-tadabbur" (for contemplation) and "li at-tadzakkur" (for reflection). These objectives suggest that the parables in these verses serve as a means to encourage readers to engage in profound reflection and internalize the wisdom contained within them, thereby fostering embodied Islamic knowledge among the readers of Ibn 'Ashur's maqasid-based exegesis. These findings not only enrich the understanding of Qur'anic texts but also offer a significant contribution to the study of embodied Islamic knowledge within maqasid-based exegesis by demonstrating how this approach can relate the text to broader universal objectives within the framework of maqasid al-shariah. Contribution: This study enriches maqasid-based exegesis by uncovering the meaning of al-tamthil verses and their connection to the objectives of sharia and embodied Islamic knowledge.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the aspects of deconstruction in the Ma'na Cum Maghza method developed by Sahiron Syamsuddin and the Linguistic Hermeneutics introduced by Arkoun. It identifies the extent to which these two methods adopt a deconstructive approach in Qur'anic interpretation, particularly in linguistic aspects, and compares the characteristics of deconstruction within them. This research employs a comparative analysis method using a library research approach, where data is collected from various relevant sources. Three main questions form the foundation of this study: (1) How are Ma'na Cum Maghza and Linguistic Hermeneutics applied in Qur'anic interpretation through a linguistic approach? (2) What makes these two methods deconstructive? (3) How do the concepts of deconstruction in these two methods compare? The findings indicate that both Ma'na Cum Maghza and Linguistic Hermeneutics contain certain methodological aspects that are deconstructive. However, this study also reveals that neither method can be fully categorized as entirely deconstructionist. Several aspects contradict the principles of deconstruction, such as the tendency of Ma'na Cum Maghza towards contextualization and the structuralist approach employed in Arkoun's Linguistic Hermeneutics. Thus, Sahiron Syamsuddin and Arkoun are not radical proponents of deconstructive reading in their interpretative methods. The theoretical implication of this research is that it provides a conceptual mapping of the application of deconstruction in contemporary Qur'anic studies and clarifies the boundaries between interpretative methods that are truly deconstructive and those that only adopt certain deconstructive principles. Contribution: This study contributes to the development of Qur'anic interpretation and hermeneutics by offering a more critical perspective on linguistically-based interpretative methods in Islam.

Abstract

71-89. Qur'anic exegetes have paid close attention to the sciences within the Qur'an, particularly linguistic sciences. One of the key areas of linguistic study is the examination of kulliyyāt (universal principles) and asālīb (stylistic methods). Kulliyyāt al-asālīb al-Qur’āniyyah constitutes a significant and essential category within the broader framework of kulliyyāt. This study aims to clarify and analyze the principles of kulliyyāt al-asālīb as understood by Qur'anic exegetes. The research adopts a library-based methodology to uncover facts regarding the semantic principles of kulliyyāt al-asālīb, utilizing a descriptive and analytical approach to address academic inquiries. The data collection method involves repeated reviews and thorough readings of relevant sources. The study concludes that the discourse on kulliyyāt dates back to early periods and has been a subject of scholarly attention among leading Qur'anic exegetes. However, it appears that less focus has been given to kulliyyāt, particularly kulliyyāt al-asālīb, in their interpretations. The research highlights key exegetical principles developed by prominent scholars, including Al-Rāzī’s principle in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:98), Ibn al-Qayyim’s principle in Surah Al-Mā’idah (5:98), Al-Shanqīṭī’s principles in Surah Āl ‘Imrān (3:7), Surah Al-Naml (27:65), Surah Al-A‘rāf (7:187), and Surah Al-Qaṣaṣ (28:88), as well as Al-Suyūṭī’s principles in Surah Al-Kahf (18:49-54) and Surah Al-Isrā’ (17:71-89). Contribution: This study contributes to Qur'anic exegesis by highlighting the overlooked role of universal styles (kulliyyāt al-asālīb) in interpretation, analyzing key exegetes, and offering a structured framework for future linguistic and exegetical research.

Abstract

This article examines the interpretation of Qur'anic verses on social media by Nadirsyah Hosen. The study employs a library research method with an analytical approach, collecting data from Hosen's posts on his Facebook page. The focus is on his interpretation of controversial Qur'anic verses in response to socio-political issues in Indonesia. The findings reveal that Qur'anic interpretation on social media tends to simplify complex exegetical discourse to align with the platform's fast-paced and accessible nature. This phenomenon contributes to the democratization of tafsir, enabling broader public engagement but also raising concerns about the validity and authority of interpretations. Furthermore, the study highlights how Hosen's contextual approach situates the Qur'an within contemporary social realities, making it more relevant to modern challenges. His method reflects a shift in Qur'anic interpretation in Indonesia, where social media facilitates a more inclusive and dynamic exegetical discourse. However, the absence of rigorous academic verification mechanisms in digital tafsir poses the risk of misinterpretation and epistemological inconsistencies. Given these dynamics, future research should explore strategies for integrating academic verification into digital Qur'anic interpretation to ensure methodological robustness. Additionally, this study is limited to the analysis of a single figure, Nadirsyah Hosen. Comparative research examining multiple digital exegetes and their interpretative frameworks would provide a more comprehensive understanding of the evolving landscape of Qur'anic interpretation in the digital era. Contribution: This study highlights the role of social media in democratizing Qur'anic interpretation while underscoring challenges to its authority and academic rigor.
