Abstract

Abstract

Background: The baby-led weaning (BLW) approach can introduce complementary food to six-month-old infants. This method offers large pieces of solid foods such as vegetables, meat, and fruit. BLW can encourage children's development, especially motor skills such as chewing and speaking. This literature review aimed to determine the definition and technique of the BLW in giving complementary feeding and identify the effect of using the BLW method on toddler development. Methods: The type of research was a literature review based on the review process of research articles that discuss the effect of BLW on toddler development. The search for articles was done from the Google Scholar and PubMed databases. Results: The author found infants were introduced to complementary feeding late from standard weaning. Initially, the baby is offered finger food and allowed to eat alone. BLW significantly affects children's development, especially in helping to form independence, preventing picky eater behaviour, stimulating children's fine motor skills, and improving oral motor skills. Conclusion: The mother offered late complementary feeding with different types of food and techniques from the standard method. The BLW could significantly influence toddler development.

Abstract

Background: Physical activity is vital in growth and development, maturation of motor and physiological functions, and cognitive abilities in the pediatric population. In children, sufficient physical activity is reported to help develop motor skills. This is because to have a good quality of movement, abilities obtained through habits in physical activity are needed. This study aimed to determine the effect of physical activity on the development of motor skills in children aged 3-12 years. Methods: The type of research was a literature review based on the review process of research articles that discuss the effect of physical activity on the development of motor skills in children aged 3-12 years. The search for articles was done from the Google Scholar and PubMed databases. Results: Based on the five selected journals in this literature review, significant positive results were obtained between physical activity and the development of motor skills in children aged 3-12 years old. The specifications of the motor skills that develop in children vary depending on the form, type, and settings of the physical activity. Conclusion: Physical activity seemed to affect the development of children's motor skills. The development of motor skills in children occurs gradually, along with physical development and stimulation of activities that spur better skills.

Abstract

Background: One of the most affected functional movements in the elderly due to aging is gait. Several parameters must be considered when conducting a gait analysis, including stride speed, length, width, and variability. This study aimed to provide an overview of gait in the elderly group. Methods: The research method used was a literature review in the form of a literature review, compiled based on secondary data from several research journals related to gait in the elderly. This Literature Review contains journals from databases such as Google Scholar and PubMed. Results: Through the elaboration of several studies comparing the elderly group with younger individuals, it could be seen that three aspects influence gait in the elderly, namely sensory, cognitive, and musculoskeletal. Conclusion: The elderly have a loss in sensory, cognitive, and musculoskeletal function as they age, resulting in slower and shorter stride lengths when compared to younger people.

Abstract

Background: Patellofemoral pain syndrome (PFPS) is one of the common injuries to the knee that often occur, causing pain when doing physical activities such as squatting, running or going up and down stairs when the knee is bent. As the joint that supports the body the most, this certainly hinders a person's activities. PFPS is caused by various risk factors ranging from intrinsic factors such as muscle strength to extrinsic factors such as type of activity. This study aimed to determine the risk factors related to PFPS as a preventive effort by doing quadriceps muscle strengthening exercises.  Methods: This study used a literature review study design using secondary data from published literature. Literature searches were conducted online through PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, using the keywords “knee injury”, “patellofemoral pain”, “patellofemoral pain syndrome”, and “risk factors”, which selected based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: From the five studies that discussed risk factors related to PFPS, it was found that all journals showed quadriceps muscle strength, type of daily activity, Q-angle, joint laxity, hip tightness, patellar imbalance, overuse, and patellofemoral joint overpressure were associated with PFPS. Conclusion: Based on the literature that has been reviewed and the discussion, the dominant risk factor associated with PFPS was a decrease in hip muscle strength, especially quadriceps. Besides, several other contributing factors include the type of daily activity, Q-angle, joint laxity, hip tightness, patellar imbalance, overuse, and patellofemoral joint overpressure.
