Abstract

Pronunciation is the way a letter, word, or language is spoken. It involves how a speaker produces sounds, stress, rhythm, and intonation in speech. Some English learners have difficulty with pronunciation since English is considered to be a foreign language in Indonesia. This research aims to show that watching English native speakers’ YouTube channel can improve students’ pronunciation ability. The researcher applied Classroom Action Research and it needed two cycles (four meetings). The criteria of success were that the students achieve the minimum standard or average score, which was equal to or greater than 70%. The students’ pretest score was 35% (very poor) and the result of the interview with the English teacher suggested that the students could not pronounce accurately since they rarely practice and never learn from native speakers. The first posttest score was 57,5% (very poor). The second posttest score was 87% (very good). It showed that the students’ score was increase and achieve the minimum standard. It could be concluded that watching English native speakers’ YouTube channel is an effective way to improve the students’ pronunciation ability.

Abstract

This research discusses the patriotism found in Mahmoud Darwish's poetry, entitled "To My Mother", by studying semiotics at Roland Barthes. This is done to find out the declarative and suggestive significance related to the sense of patriotism in Mahmoud Darwish's poetry to my mother and the effect of poetry on the reader. The researcher used the qualitative descriptive approach with the theory of analysis to study the semiotics of Roland Barthes, which explains the meaning of patriotism through declarative significance, suggestive significance, and superstitious significance. It clarifies the linguistic declarative signification according to the actual meaning, while the suggestive gives the meaning of the poetry in depth. The metaphorical signification is an ideological process of suggestive that serves to provide justification and disclosure of the dominant values ??that apply during a certain time period. The primary data in this scientific research is Poetry To My Mother by Mahmoud Darwish and the secondary sources support books related to scientific research. From the analysis, it is known that the declarative significance is that this poetry indicates the poet's longing for his mother, and the suggestive significance of this poem is the poet's longing for his homeland. Likewise, the influence of Mahmoud Darwish's poetry on the readers made them feel nostalgic in the words about longing for the motherland far from their lives.

Abstract

In reading, students are required to learn to comprehend the content of the text. Lexical density is one of the factors that influences students’ reading comprehension. Lexical density is a condition of words’ proportion in a text, which shows the ratio of content words (CW) and grammatical function words (GFW). This research used the “Passport to the World” English textbook for the 8th grade of junior high school to be analyzed. This study aims to find out the genres of reading materials offered by the curriculum 2013 found in the textbook and to examine the lexical density of the reading materials in the textbook. A qualitative approach was applied, while content analysis was used as the research design. Data were collected with document analysis. The findings showed that there are 3 genres of reading materials, among 5 genres offered by the curriculum 2013, included in the textbook such as descriptive, recount, and functional texts in the form of announcements. From those, it was found that two texts were categorized as low lexical density, 11 texts were categorized as medium lexical density, and four texts were labeled as high lexical density. In addition, the composition of this text did not reach the ideal ratio of 1:2:1 for index difficulty. However, this textbook can still be suggested to be used in the class with some usage modifications in the classroom.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a correlation between English learning motivation and students speaking ability. The research used a quantitative method in correlational research design and statistical tests of IBM SPSS 20 with the Spearman-rank Correlation test formula. After testing both variables, the data shows no relationship between English learning motivation and students speaking ability. The inferential statistical analysis results show that the result of the Spearman-rank Correlation test is valued as much as Sig = 0.224 < 0.05 (there is no correlation) with a correlation coefficient of 0.167. Eventually, the correlation test results between learning motivation and students' speaking ability show that students' speaking ability is not thoroughly influenced by motivation in learning English.
