Abstract

Abstract

This study discusses the design and development of Arabic receptive skills learning materials, which include mahārah istimā' (listening skills) and mahārah qirā’ah (reading skills). This topic was chosen because receptive skills play an important role as the foundation of Arabic language acquisition; however, in practice, the learning process of listening and reading skills still faces various problems, such as limited vocabulary mastery, a lack of varied learning media, and learning materials that are not yet suited to students' needs. This study aims to describe the concept of Arabic receptive skills, explain the principles of effective learning material design, and examine the steps for developing listening and reading learning materials. This research employed a qualitative approach with a library research method. The data were obtained from various sources, including books, journals, research articles, and academic documents on Arabic language learning. Data collection was conducted through documentation techniques, while data analysis used the Miles and Huberman interactive model, which consists of data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results of the study indicate that effective receptive skills learning materials should be designed based on gradual, communicative, relevant, and contextual principles. In addition, the use of audio media, texts, and digital technology has proven to improve students' motivation and comprehension in Arabic language learning. The development of interactive learning activities also encourages students to become more active in understanding conversations and Arabic texts. Therefore, the design and development of innovative learning materials that are suited to students' needs are essential for improving the quality of mahārah istimā' and mahārah qirā’ah learning in modern Arabic language education.

Abstract

Abstract

This research, entitled “Abū Hilāl al-ʿAskarī and His Contributions to the Field of Arabic Literary Criticism,” seeks to shed light on the critical contributions made by Abū Hilāl al-ʿAskarī to classical Arabic literary criticism, particularly through his seminal work Kitāb al-Ṣināʿatayn (The Book of the Two Arts). The central problem addressed in the study lies in the perception held by some scholars that Abū Hilāl was merely a transmitter of the views of his predecessors, lacking innovation or originality. Such a view, however, overlooks the significant intellectual efforts he made, especially when assessed within their proper historical context. The importance of this research lies in its objective and fair re-evaluation of Abū Hilāl al-ʿAskarī’s role and contributions to the field of classical Arabic criticism. It aims to reposition his work as a vital link in the chain of the development of Arabic critical thought. The study highlights both his theoretical and applied insights, thereby offering a more nuanced understanding of his critical legacy.Among the key findings of the study is that Abū Hilāl al-ʿAskarī not only compiled the opinions of earlier critics but also organized them according to refined aesthetic and critical sensibilities, enriching them with his own analytical insights and vast knowledge of Arabic poetic and prose traditions. The research is structured into an introduction and four main sections. The introduction outlines the topic and its significance. The first chapter is titled The Status of Abū Hilāl al-ʿAskarī in the History of Rhetoric and Criticism. The second chapter addresses Abū Hilāl al-ʿAskarī and Kalām (Islamic Theology). The third chapter :examines The Methodology of Abū Hilāl in Kitāb al-Ṣināʿatayn. The fourth is titled Abū Hilāl and His Critics. This is followed by the conclusion, which presents the key findings, as well as a section on recommendations, and finally the bibliography.

Abstract

The teaching of kitabah (Arabic writing skill) remains one of the most challenging yet pivotal aspects of Arabic language education for non-native learners. Despite the proliferation of diverse instructional methods ranging from traditional to contemporary digital and gamification-based approaches, no comprehensive synthesis has mapped the innovation landscape of kitabah learning methods to date. This systematic review aims to identify, categorize, and analyze instructional methods used in kitabah learning from 2022 to 2026, drawing on 89 empirical and conceptual studies sourced from Scopus, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar databases. Following the PRISMA protocol, a rigorous screening process reduced an initial pool of 306 records to 26 studies eligible for final synthesis. Findings reveal five dominant method clusters: (1) classical dictation-based methods (imla'), (2) guided and free composition (insya'), (3) cooperative and collaborative learning methods, (4) technology-mediated and digital methods, and (5) multimodal and AI-assisted methods. Results indicate a clear trend toward technology integration, with gamification, mind mapping, project-based learning, and AI tools increasingly supplementing traditional methods. Teacher enthusiasm, learner motivation, and institutional readiness emerge as cross-cutting moderators of effectiveness. The review concludes with a proposed innovation map and recommendations for future research and pedagogical practice.

Abstract

This study examines talk style patterns and the use of slang as a non-standard variety among students in the Master’s Program in Arabic Language Education (MPBA) at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. This topic is important to study because the use of slang among students continues to evolve alongside the influence of digital media, while the MPBA community possesses unique characteristics as an academic group with high linguistic competence yet remains active in using non-standard varieties in daily communication. This study aims to describe the characteristics of MPBA students’ talk style, identify the forms of slang used, and analyze the relationship between talk style patterns and the use of slang in various communication contexts. The study employs a descriptive qualitative approach using data collection techniques such as observation, semi-structured interviews, and conversation documentation. Research informants were purposively selected from active MPBA students at UIN Maulana Malik Ibrahim Malang. Data were analyzed through the stages of data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions. The research findings indicate that MPBA students possess strong style-shifting abilities, adapting their speech style based on the situation, communication goals, and conversation partner. In formal contexts, students tend to use standard language, whereas in informal contexts, they use a more relaxed and expressive style. The forms of slang identified include Indonesian slang, Arabic–Indonesian slang, and English–Indonesian slang. The use of slang is more dominant in informal interactions and serves as a means of building closeness, solidarity, and group identity. The research findings confirm that the use of slang does not diminish students’ academic abilities but rather demonstrates sociolinguistic competence in selecting language varieties appropriate to the communicative context.

Abstract

This study investigates gender representation in the verbal and visual texts of Arabic textbooks used at STAIN Sultan Abdurrahman Kepulauan Riau, namely Al-Lughah al-‘Arabiyyah al-Rā’i‘ah lil-Mubtadi’īn 1 and 2. The study employed a critical content analysis approach to examine how gender is constructed through both visual and verbal elements in the textbooks. Visual data were analyzed through four indicators: pictures that only included men or women, foregrounded male/female figures in relation to backgrounded ones, pictures of boys and girls, and visual contexts identified as domestic or professional. Verbal data were analyzed through three indicators: men and women as subjects, objects, and possessives in sentences. The findings reveal that male representation remains dominant across both dimensions. In the visual texts, men were more visible, more frequently foregrounded, and more often represented as children than women. In the verbal texts, men also appeared more frequently as subjects, objects, and possessive forms in sentence structures. These findings indicate that gender bias in the textbooks operates simultaneously at both visual and verbal levels. The study confirms that Arabic textbooks function not only as pedagogical tools but also as ideological media that may reproduce gendered power relations. Therefore, the development of Arabic teaching materials in Islamic higher education needs to be more responsive to gender-inclusive and equitable representation.

Abstract

Arabic language instruction in Indonesian higher education faces the diglossic challenge between Fusha (standard Arabic) and Amiyah (colloquial dialects). Instruction predominantly emphasizes Fusha, while Amiyah is rarely or never formally taught, resulting in students who are proficient in formal literacy but limited in practical communication. This study aims to explore academics’ perceptions regarding the teaching of Fusha and Amiyah, understand students’ challenges, and evaluate the curriculum strategies employed. A descriptive qualitative approach was adopted, involving in-depth interviews with 20 Arabic language academics from various State Islamic Universities (UINs) across Indonesia, analyzed using content analysis techniques. Findings indicate that Fusha serves as the primary foundation for academic literacy, whereas Amiyah is acquired informally through extracurricular experiences or exchange programs. Teaching strategies include lectures, text analysis, discussions, and Fusha-based writing exercises. These results provide an in-depth understanding of the prioritization of formal literacy and underscore the need to develop optional Amiyah modules to equip students with cross-cultural communication skills. The study recommends further exploration of integrating Amiyah into the formal curriculum.

Abstract

Abstract

This study examines the importance of learning motivation in supporting students’ success in an Arabic private tutoring program. Arabic learning often presents challenges, particularly in vocabulary, Arabic syntax, morphology, and Arabic text reading. This study aims to describe students’ learning motivation in joining the Arabic Private Tutoring Program at Al-Fatih Private Tutoring Institute. It also identifies the supporting and inhibiting factors that influence their motivation. This study employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The researchers collected data through interviews, observation, and documentation. The data were analyzed through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that students’ initial motivation was generally influenced by parental encouragement, academic needs, and the desire to understand religious lessons. However, after participating in the private tutoring program, students’ motivation developed into intrinsic motivation. They felt more comfortable, confident, and supported in understanding Arabic. The main supporting factors included patient tutors, gradual learning methods, a conducive learning environment, and parental support. The inhibiting factors included difficulties in understanding Arabic grammar and limited independent practice. This study concludes that the Arabic private tutoring program plays an important role in fostering students’ learning motivation. It also improves their self-confidence and strengthens their basic Arabic language competence.
