Abstract

The majority of the population living along the riverbanks in Banjarmasin city are highly dependent on the river for their daily activities such as bathing, washing clothes, cooking, and defecating. On the other hand, it is known that the river water quality in Banjarmasin is heavily polluted, with the worst pollution coming from toilet waste. It is surprising that the river, which is already polluted, is still being used by the riverbank communities for their daily needs. Based on this, researchers were interested in understanding the perceptions, habits, and extent of environmental awareness and gender relations of the riverbank communities in Banjarmasin. The research used a descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques such as participatory observation, interviews, and documentation. The results showed that the community's perception of the current condition of the river is very concerning and they are aware of the dangers posed by the pollution. The community's habits regarding environmental cleanliness vary depending on the human resources available in the area. Gender relations show that there is a fair division of roles between men and women in maintaining environmental cleanliness.

Abstract

The value of local wisdom in the Sasak community on the island of Lombok has shifted away from the awik-awik tradition. This shift is believed to have contributed to the high rate of early marriage. The researcher aims to investigate whether the awik-awik tradition is the cause of early marriage practices, using Anthony Giddens' theory of legal awareness and structuration as a framework. This qualitative research employs interview and documentation methods to gather data. The study's findings suggest that the awareness of the law of 'awik-awik' among the Sasak people, particularly minors, is very low. This is supported by the number of young people who intentionally violate 'awik-awik' by getting married without their parents' permission or blessing. Furthermore, there is a close relationship between the perpetrators of early marriage (agents) and the structure of this violation of 'awik-awik'. Agents are under the authority of community and religious leaders, such as the dusun head, RT, and penghulu. If someone violates the awik-awik, these leaders are the first to take action. Violating the awik-awik is considered a disgrace, especially for minors, who may be forced into marriage as a result. It is important to note that minors who violate the awik-awik have no choice but to marry, as this is a legitimate sanction according to the awik-awik.

Abstract

This study delves into gender-specific linguistic variations in YouTube vlogs, analysing language features employed by 30 daily English language video vlogs, evenly split between 15 male and 15 female vloggers. Employing a qualitative research design with content analysis, the study identifies prevalent language features and scrutinizes their typologies and intended functions through a systematic four-step method, encompassing data segmentation, code formulation, category development, and the identification of overarching themes. Taboo and swearing, directive and command language feature prominently among male vloggers. In contrast, female vloggers utilize compliments, hedges, tag questions, and questions to engage with their audience on YouTube. This study offers valuable insights into the distinct language patterns of male and female vloggers, contributing to a nuanced understanding of communication dynamics in online platforms and shedding light on the intersection of gender and language in online contexts.

Abstract

This study aims to explore the role of Progressive Islamic Education in women's empowerment from the perspective of Suud Sarim Karimullah. It employs a qualitative research methodology, focusing on a literature review that includes an analysis of the works of Suud Sarim Karimullah and related literature, such as relevant books and journals, analyzed based on structuralism theory. This study demonstrates that Progressive Islamic Education, which combines fundamental Islamic principles with modern values such as gender equality and human rights, can enhance women's access to quality education. This education not only empowers women in terms of education but also increases their participation in the workforce and political decision-making. Additionally, Progressive Islamic Education helps to overcome social and cultural barriers, as well as gender stereotypes that limit women's roles. By involving the Muslim community, including religious leaders and families, Progressive Islamic Education can foster positive change in society. The impact of women's empowerment through Progressive Islamic Education is evident in the improvement of economic well-being, poverty reduction, and increased social stability. Structuralism analysis shows that Progressive Islamic Education can shape social structures that support change, address patriarchal norms, and promote sustainable gender equality. Therefore, from the perspective of Suud Sarim Karimullah, Progressive Islamic Education is an effective tool for women's empowerment and the development of an inclusive and just society.

Abstract

Cultivating the foundations of moral values and diversity in children is important from an early developmental stage. This article aims to explain how teachers introduce aspects of multicultural education to children. This research uses a qualitative research design in the form of a case study with seven teachers as respondents. Data were collected through observation, interview, and documentation techniques and then analyzed using thematic analysis consisting of three steps recommended by Miles and Huberman, namely data reduction, data presentation, and inference. The results showed that in introducing diversity, teachers provide role models for children, integrate material about cultural diversity into the learning curriculum, use interesting learning methods and media, invite children to visit historical sites and places of worship, hold activities and celebrate holidays related to cultural diversity, and hold extracurricular activities to introduce cultural diversity. It is expected that this article will have significant implications for educational practice, for ongoing professional development to equip teachers with the skills and knowledge needed to effectively teach and model diversity and inclusion, and for educational institutions to prioritize the development and implementation of curricula that reflect and celebrate cultural diversity.

Abstract

This review synthesizes existing research on the intricate relationship between gender and academic writing, exploring gendered writing styles, perceptions of writing quality, representation in academic publishing, intersectionality with other social identities, and interventions to promote gender equity. Findings reveal nuanced variations in writing practices, with female scholars tending toward more tentative styles and male scholars favoring assertive approaches. Evaluation biases persist, perpetuating gender stereotypes that impact grading and recognition. Structural inequities manifest in academic publishing landscapes, hindering diverse representation. An intersectional lens elucidates the compounding effects of gender, race, class, and disciplinary affiliations. Interventions proposed include gender-neutral guidelines, bias training, diversity initiatives, and institutional policies supporting inclusivity. While progress has been made, ongoing efforts are needed to dismantle persisting biases, address inequities, and cultivate equitable spaces valuing diverse voices in knowledge production. This comprehensive review informs future research directions and institutional strategies toward gender equity in academic writing.

Abstract

This study examines the problem of gender bias and bullying in boarding schools in Indonesia with the aim of identifying the problem profile, influencing factors, and applicable solutions. The research method used is a qualitative approach with an in-depth literature review with a literature approach and several journals that discuss bullying in boarding schools. The research findings show that gender bias is manifested in restrictions on access to education and stereotyped gender role expectations among santri. The separation between male and female students has become a pesantren tradition with the aim of more focused access to education. However, stereotypical views of gender roles also affect various activities in pesantren. Bullying appears in the form of verbal intimidation, social exclusion, and physical violence between students, and even victims of bullying can experience significant psychological distress. The implications of this study are the need for increased awareness and education on gender equality and anti-bullying, the adoption of structured anti-discrimination and anti-bullying policies, and strengthening the role of supervisors and counselors in pesantren. This study provides a foundation for further efforts in developing inclusive education policies and effective intervention strategies to address issues of gender bias and bullying in pesantren education settings.

Abstract

The study on women and gender in Islam has become an intriguing subject for many scholars over the past few decades. One of these is Leila Ahmed's work entitled "Women and Gender in Islam: Historical Roots in Modern Debate." This work has made a significant contribution in deconstructing stereotypes and expanding understanding of how religion and culture shape views of women in Muslim societies. This article aims to analyze Leila Ahmed's thoughts on the methodological aspects and approaches she employs. The research utilizes a qualitative literature review method with documentary analysis techniques. The research findings indicate that Leila Ahmed's life experiences, crossing social and cultural boundaries, have had a profound influence on the development of her scholarly identity. She has encountered a personally "lived" Islam, acquired and taught by her mother, as well as a ritualistic and at times oppressive Islam imposed by the state. She has experienced educational opportunities afforded to her by Western influences in Egypt, yet suffered racism and stereotypes from teachers and peers in England. These diverse experiences have imbued meaning into her work and compelled her to provide balanced and sensitive analyses in her book. There, Leila Ahmed does not highlight what is right or wrong but instead portrays a complex situation by presenting multiple possible responses to each question.
