Abstract

This study investigates the application of qawāʿid (principles) and ḍawābiṭ (methodological parameters) in interpreting Qur’anic expressions through a tadabbur-based approach. The study addresses a critical gap in contemporary Qur’anic studies, namely the tendency toward partial and overly literal interpretations that prioritize linguistic analysis while neglecting the integration of authoritative interpretative sources. This research aims to develop a systematic and integrative framework for understanding Qur’anic language that is both methodologically sound and contextually relevant. Employing a qualitative method with a library research design, this study analyzes classical and contemporary tafsir literature to identify patterns, principles, and interpretative structures. The findings demonstrate that valid Qur’anic interpretation requires the integration of three key dimensions: linguistic analysis, contextual understanding (siyaq), and authoritative sources, including the Qur’an, hadith, and interpretations of early Muslim scholars. Furthermore, this study proposes a multi-layered and cyclical interpretative model, in which interpretation begins with the Qur’an, is clarified through hadith and early authorities, analyzed via linguistic and contextual approaches, and ultimately revalidated against the Qur’an. This model serves as a methodological control mechanism to ensure interpretative accuracy and prevent deviation. The study contributes to Qur’anic hermeneutics by offering an integrative framework that bridges classical scholarship and contemporary interpretative needs.

Abstract

This study is motivated by the disparity between the normative Islamic teaching of birrul walidain (filial piety) and the contemporary social reality of child neglect perpetrated by parents. This gap raises a fundamental question regarding how children's devotion to parents should be understood when the basic rights of children are unmet from early childhood. The research aims to reinterpret Q.S. Al-Isra [17]:24 contextually using the Ma’nā cum Maghzā approach to uncover the dynamic significance of this verse in addressing the problem of child neglect. Employing qualitative methodology through library research, this study analyzes linguistic, intratextual, intertextual, and historical contexts of the verse before developing its significance for contemporary issues. The findings indicate that historically, this verse corrected pre-Islamic Arab societal practices that marginalized children and the elderly by affirming the family as a space of love and intergenerational responsibility. In the contemporary context, the verse is relevant in balancing the rights and obligations between parents and children within a framework of mubādalah (reciprocity). For children who suffer from child neglect, the verse allows room for adaptive filial piety, such as maintaining basic respect, praying for parents, and setting healthy relational boundaries to safeguard psychological well-being. Consequently, Q.S. Al-Isra [17]:24 establishes a family ethic rooted in holistic caregiving and reciprocal relationships that are just, humane, and pertinent to modern contexts.

Abstract

This article is an in-depth study of Zaghlul El-Naggar's work on the verses of the cosmos which is an important contribution to contemporary scholarly interpretation that seeks to harmonize the interpretation of the Qur'an with the latest scientific discoveries. The main purpose of this research is to analyze the three basic dimensions of the book, namely its structural structure, the essence of its interpretation, and the methodology used on the theme of water, earth, and day-night alternation. This study applies a qualitative method with a type of literature research, which focuses on the analysis of written sources related to the research topic. The findings of this study show that each kauniyah theme discussed by El-Naggar has a depth of meaning that goes beyond just scientific explanations. On the theme of water, the Qur'an not only affirms the biological role of water, but also places it as a fundamental element in the entire system of life that God created. Likewise, the theme of the creation of heaven and earth and the alternation of day and night, both of which are understood not only as ordinary natural phenomena, but as signs (verses) of Allah's power that must encourage humans to think critically, study the universe, and get closer to the Creator.

Abstract

Differences in Qur’anic qira’at not only demonstrate the diversity of recitations, but also have implications for the interpretation of Qur’anic verses. One form of these differences is an-naqsh wa az-ziyādah, namely the omission (naqsh) and addition (ziyadah) of lexical elements in various qira’at narrations. Although this phenomenon has long been discussed in classical Islamic literature, studies specifically examining its exegetical implications remain relatively limited. Therefore, this study aims to identify the forms of an-naqsh wa az-ziyādah in qira’at and analyze their implications for Qur’anic interpretation. This research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were collected from classical qira’at works, literature on ‘ulūm al-Qur’an, tafsir books, and Indonesian academic journals. The analysis was conducted using a linguistic approach to identify forms of omission and addition in lexical structures, as well as comparative and exegetical approaches to examine differences in meaning arising from qira’at variations. The findings reveal that an-naqsh wa az-ziyādah in qira’at includes variations at the levels of letters, words, and sentence structures, all of which influence the nuances of Qur’anic meaning. These differences are not contradictory; rather, they complement one another and enrich the dimensions of interpretation. In several cases, such variations also affect differences in emphasis of meaning and the process of legal deduction (istinbāṭ al-aḥkām). This study confirms that qira’at play a strategic role in Qur’anic exegesis, making the understanding of an-naqsh wa az-ziyādah essential for achieving a more comprehensive, integrative, and contextual interpretation of the Qur’an.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the concept of emotional stability from the perspective of the Qur’an, including its definition, factors causing instability, Qur’anic values for emotion regulation, the examples of the prophets, and its implementation in modern life. The method used is library research with a Structured Thematic Analysis (STA) approach that adopts the principles of Grounded Theory. The primary data sources are Qur’anic verses related to tranquility (ṭuma’nīnah), patience, prayer, tawakkul, and the stories of the prophets. The results show that Qur’anic emotional stability is centered on ṭuma’nīnah achieved through dhikr, patience, prayer, tawakkul, and optimism. Factors causing instability include the trait of halu’an (restlessness and complaint), lack of patience, absence of tawakkul, and despair of Allah’s mercy. Qur’anic values such as dhikr, beautiful patience (shabran jamilan), prayer as periodic emotion regulation, tawakkul, qana’ah, and ridha are proven effective in controlling emotions. The implementation of these values is relevant in workplace stress management, social media emotion regulation, and spiritually-based parenting.

Abstract

This study aims to thematically analyze the Qur'anic insights on religious authority in da'wah (Islamic propagation), focusing on three main aspects: (1) types of authority forms in da'wah, (2) reasons for the use of such authority, and (3) the impacts of using authority in contemporary contexts. This research employs a qualitative approach using the Structured Thematic Analysis (STA) method, which adopts the principles of Grounded Theory. The primary data sources are Qur'anic verses related to da'wah authority, supported by credible exegeses such as Tafsir al-Misbah, Tafsir Ibn Kathir, and Tafsir al-Maraghi. The findings indicate that the Qur'an teaches seven forms of da'wah authority, all of which culminate in wisdom, gentleness, truthful and impactful speech, patience, and repelling evil with goodness. The use of authority is driven by theological reasons such as collective obligation (farḍ kifāyah) and the status of the best community (khayr ummah), yet it is bounded by the principle that the duty of the preacher (dā'ī) is only to convey the message, not to coerce. The impact of a correct understanding of da'wah authority is the emergence of a moderate attitude that respects religious freedom and individual responsibility. This study is expected to contribute to the development of Islamic da'wah as a mercy to all worlds (raḥmatan lil 'ālamīn) in the contemporary era.

Abstract

This study of the Qur’an requires methods that can accurately explain the meanings of the text and produce legal understandings that are consistent with the objectives of Islamic law. This research aims to examine the integration of qawāid lughah and uṣūl fiqh in Qur’anic interpretation and to explain their contributions to understanding Qur’anic verses. Employing a library research method, this study draws upon various sources related to Arabic linguistic principles and the foundations of Islamic jurisprudence. The analysis is conducted through linguistic and legal approaches to explore the relationship between these two disciplines in the interpretive process. The findings reveal that qawāid lughah functions to clarify the meanings of words, grammatical structures and the linguistic context of Qur’anic verses, while uṣūl fiqh provides a methodological framework for understanding legal implications and the objectives of Islamic law. These two disciplines are closely interconnected and mutually reinforcing, enabling a more comprehensive understanding of the Qur’an. Therefore, the integration of qawāid lughah and uṣūl fiqh constitutes an essential foundation for developing Qur’anic interpretations that are more accurate, systematic, and academically accountable.

Abstract

This study examines the meaning of “fasik” in Surah Al-Baqarah/2:26–27 through a comparative analysis of the interpretations offered by Ahmad Mustafa al-Marāgī in Tafsir al-Marāgī and M. Quraish Shihab’s Tafsir al-Misbah. This study is motivated by the importance of the concept of fasik in the Qur’an as well as the limited number of studies that specifically compare the interpretations of these two exegetes regarding this verse. This study is a literature review(library research) employing a qualitative approach and utilizing the muqāran exegesis method. The results of the study show that both exegetes agree that fasik refers to the act of turning away from obedience to Allah after the arrival of guidance and truth. Both also identify three main characteristics of the fasik: violating Allah’s covenant, severing relationships that are commanded to be maintained, and causing corruption on earth. The difference lies in the emphasis of their interpretations. Al-Marāgī places greater emphasis on linguistic, rational, and historical approaches, whereas Quraish Shihab emphasizes moral, spiritual, and socio-contextual relevance. This study concludes that the concept of fasik in QS. Al-Baqarah/2:26–27 refers not only to sinners but also to individuals who consciously turn away from Allah’s guidance, thereby damaging their relationship with Allah, fellow human beings, and the environment.

Abstract

This study was motivated by the phenomenon of modern life which tends to reduce the meaning of success into material aspects such as wealth, popularity, and outward achievements. The research problem addressed how QS. An-Naṣr was interpreted in the perspective of Mafātīḥ al-Ghaib by Fakhruddin al-Razi and its relevance to contemporary issues. This study aimed to analyze the concept of success in QS. An-Naṣr and to relate it to modern social phenomena. The method used was qualitative library research with descriptive-analytical and contextual approaches. The findings showed that, according to al-Razi, success was not merely understood as external victory, but as a divine gift that must be responded to through tasbih, praise, and repentance. This perspective also served as a critique of materialistic paradigms that neglect spiritual dimensions. Furthermore, QS. An-Naṣr was found to be relevant to contemporary phenomena such as flexing culture, Fear of Missing Out (FOMO), and the crisis of meaning after success. In conclusion, success in the Qur’anic perspective was not a moment of euphoria, but a point of spiritual reflection that required awareness, humility, and moral responsibility.

Abstract

The semantic approach is one of the linguistic approaches that plays a significant role in Qur’anic exegesis by providing a comprehensive understanding of lexical, grammatical, and contextual meanings. This study aims to explain the concept of the semantic approach, describe its application procedures in Qur’anic exegesis, and analyze its significance in producing more profound and contextual interpretations of the Qur’an. This research employs a qualitative library research method. The data were collected from books, scholarly journals, articles, and other relevant academic sources and analyzed using a descriptive-analytical method based on Toshihiko Izutsu’s semantic approach, focusing on basic meaning, relational meaning, and lexical, grammatical, and contextual analyses. The findings reveal that the semantic approach not only examines the primary meaning of Qur’anic vocabulary but also explores the interrelationship between concepts within the Qur’anic linguistic system, the diachronic and synchronic development of meanings, and their connection to historical and social contexts. The application of this approach to the concepts of tabarruj, al-Muzzammil, and nafs wāḥidah demonstrates that the meanings of Qur’anic verses are shaped by linguistic relations, grammatical structures, and contextual usage. Therefore, the semantic approach contributes to producing more objective, comprehensive, contextual, and relevant interpretations of the Qur’an while preserving its fundamental values in addressing contemporary issues.
