Abstract

This research is based on the need for an approach to Qur'anic interpretation that is able to answer the spiritual crisis of modern Muslims, amid the dominance of rational-textual interpretations that often ignore the esoteric dimension of revelation. This study aims to examine and evaluate Imran N. Hosein's tafsir methodology in Methodology for the Study of the Qur'an, which offers a paradigm for reading the Qur'an based on spiritual depth, spiritual intuition, and the integration of meaning systems. The method used in this research is library research with a content analysis approach to Hosein's works and other supporting literature. The results of the study show that Hosein emphasizes the importance of purity of soul, daily recitation, direct practice of verses, and the connection of verses in the cosmic structure as prerequisites for a complete understanding. He also rejects the atomistic interpretation approach and calls for the restoration of the authority of revelation as the main epistemic source in Islamic studies. This finding confirms that there are significant contributions related to Hosein's methodology in building a transformative, integrative and contextual Qur'anic interpretation, while challenging the dominant legalistic and secularistic paradigm in contemporary Qur'anic studies. Imran Hosein has presented a new method of understanding the Qur'an as a form of self-purification, moral commitment and openness to the inner light of revelation. His approach mediates between the spiritual traditions of classical Islam and the ethical-transformative needs of people in the modern era.

Abstract

Psychosocial rehabilitation for individuals with schizophrenia typically addresses social skills, vocational training, and symptom management, yet often overlooks the spiritual dimension of recovery. Transpersonal spiritual therapy—which integrates spiritual or religious practices into psychotherapy—has emerged as a promising approach to fulfill patients’ spiritual needs alongside psychosocial goals. This literature review expands previous analyses by comparing two faith-based transpersonal interventions: Islamic Asma’ therapy and Hindu Sekala-Niskala therapy. Drawing on research from 2020– 2025 and earlier foundational studies, we examine the philosophical underpinnings, therapeutic processes, and clinical outcomes of each approach. Both frameworks emphasize connecting with a higher power to promote inner peace, meaning, and personal growth, aligning closely with transpersonal psychology’s focus on experiences beyond the ego. Case studies and recent trials indicate that integrating spiritual practices (e.g. dhikr meditation, prayer, yoga, melukat cleansing rituals) into rehabilitation can reduce psychopathology, enhance coping, and improve quality of life for people with serious mental illness. Findings show that while theological content differs, both religious frameworks offer transpersonal techniques that support recovery and complement conventional treatment.

Abstract

Sheikh Abdur Rauf as-Singkili (1615-1693) stands as a pivotal figure in the intellectual history of Islam in the Nusantara, particularly for his masterful synthesis of sharia and Sufism during the theological crises of 17th-century Aceh. This study examines the foundational pillars of as-Singkili's Sufi thought and their enduring relevance for contemporary challenges. Employing a qualitative method with an exploratory-phenomenological approach through library research, this study analyzes primary sources including Tarjuman al-Mustafid and 'Umdat al-Muhtajin, alongside secondary literature on his biography and teachings. The findings reveal that as-Singkili's Sufi framework is anchored in six key pillars: reinterpretation of wujudiyyah affirming God's transcendence; inseparability of sharia and tasawuf as complementary dimensions; the concept of Nur Muhammad as cosmic center; the Seven Ranks systematizing God-creation relationships; dhikr as primary practice of divine awareness; and ethics as manifestation of tawhid in behavior. His integrative model—Sharia → Tariqa → Haqiqa → Ma'rifa—established a middle path (wasatiyyah) that prevented both antinomian mysticism and rigid formalism, shaping the distinctive moderate character of Nusantara Islam. The study demonstrates that as-Singkili's teachings remain urgently relevant for addressing modern challenges including materialism and consumerism, digital-age individualism and cyberbullying, and the need for holistic character education. His emphasis on spiritual balance (zuhud), self-control (mujahadah), divine consciousness (muraqabah), and ethics rooted in tawhid offers practical frameworks for navigating contemporary complexities while maintaining spiritual integrity. As-Singkili thus represents a timeless model of Islamic moderation whose intellectual legacy continues to provide foundations for building a tolerant, spiritually grounded, and ethically engaged Muslim society

Abstract

There exists a research problem concerning the inability of the Muslim community in North Sumatra, Indonesia, to prevent and minimise disputes between husband and wife, despite the presence of taṣawwuf akhlāqī theory as a potential solution to social issues. Through the use of a qualitative literature review, this study synthesises primary and secondary data from scholarly works published within the last decade, employing a descriptive–causal approach through taṣawwuf akhlāqī analysis to understand the development of the ideal family. The research aims to explore the concept of the ideal family and to analyse family disputes through taṣawwuf akhlāqī within the context of household development. The findings indicate that an ideal family relationship is embodied in the concepts of sakīnah, mawaddah, and raḥmah, which aim to produce a golden generation with sound spirituality and positive morality. The results demonstrate that taṣawwuf akhlāqī is crucial for achieving an ideal family relationship and strengthening family resilience. Takhallī helps to minimise negative behaviours that may lead to family conflict, whereas taḥallī enhances positive conduct, enabling families to receive blessings and mercy from Allah SWT. Consequently, family conflicts are reduced, and a golden generation with strong spiritual and moral character can be nurtured as ʿamal jāriyah for the parents who have raised and guided them (tajallī). The novelty of this research lies in the integration of taṣawwuf akhlāqī teachings into the development of the ideal Islamic family through the three stages is takhallī, taḥallī, and tajallī as a comprehensive ethical–spiritual model for building modern household harmony that is both applicable and contextual.

Abstract

This study examines Sufi healing in Islamic tradition as a psycho-spiritual healing system rooted in the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the practices of the Companions, and the intellectual–spiritual development of classical Sufism. The research aims to explain the concepts, historical foundations, principles, methods, and contemporary relevance of Sufi healing for modern individuals who experience stress, anxiety, and meaning crises. Using a descriptive qualitative method through library research, this study analyzes classical Sufi texts, works of Islamic medicine, scholarly journals, and contemporary books, supported by hermeneutic analysis and source triangulation. The findings reveal that Sufi healing originated from prophetic practices such as ruqyah, supplication, and balanced living, and was later systematized by figures such as Ibn Sina, al-Razi, and al-Ghazali into a holistic healing paradigm that views humans as a unity of body, soul, and spirit. Its core principles include bodily–spiritual balance, tazkiyat al-nafs, remembrance (dhikr) as spiritual energy therapy, supplication and ruqyah, as well as meditation and contemplation (tafakkur). These principles manifest in practical methods such as dhikr jahr and khafi, sama’, qawwali, herbal remedies, and spiritual energy transfer practiced within various Sufi orders, including Mevlevi, Chishti, Qadiriyya, Naqshbandiyya, Sammaniyya, and Alawiyya. In the modern era, Sufi healing contributes significantly to Islamic psychotherapy, Islamic mindfulness, and holistic medicine by offering a comprehensive model that integrates medical, psychological, and theological dimensions, fostering inner tranquility, mental well-being, and spiritual closeness to Allah.

Abstract

The integration of psychotherapy with tasawwuf has become prominent topic in the field of psychology over the past few decades, largely due to the perception that modern psychology has failed to provide solutions for the increasing mental health problems. Classical tasawwuf and Islamic scholarly traditions are now being paid attention as both are considered to offer effective alternatives. This article aims to explore the expansion of tasawwuf discourse from the realm of spiritual-religious experience into an intellectual-discursive dimension. The study focuses on the efforts of two prominent figures, Nursamad Kamba and Abdalla Rothman, in integrating Islamic tasawwuf and conception of soul with modern psychotherapy. Research was conducted through interview and literature review using content analysis methods. The results indicate that the common ground between the two lies in their awareness of the fundamental relevance of Islamic concepts to modern psychology and psychotherapy. However, there are substantial differences between them that can be examined from ontological, epistemological, methodological, and practical aspects. Nursamad Kamba comprehensively integrates the entirety of tasawwuf with psychotherapy, which had been established as a university study program. Whereas Abdallah Rothman formulated his conception as a theoretical model of Islamic Psychotherapy applicable in clinical practice. Theoretically, this study has implications for strengthening the philosophical discourse on the integration of Islamic scholarly tradition of tasawwuf and psychotherapy and encourages cross-cultural and interdisciplinary research. Practically, it promotes collaboration between academics and practitioners trained in both Islamic and Western psychotherapy traditions to address complex mental health issues and improve the overall mental well-being of society.

Abstract

Mental health has become a crucial issue in the pressure-laden realities of modern life. The Sufi thought of Ibn Arabi offers an alternative approach that integrates spiritual and psychological dimensions in shaping a healthy soul. This article aims to describe the stages of inner transformation within Ibn Arabi’s psychospiritual framework ranging from the purification of the soul (tazkiyah al-nafs), existential awareness (ma‘rifat), the balance between effort and surrender (ikhtiar-tawakal), to the attainment of self-perfection (insān al-kāmil). This study employs a qualitative method using a library research approach to analyze Ibn Arabi’s primary works and relevant secondary literature. The findings reveal that, according to Ibn Arabi, mental well-being is achieved through a deep and systematic spiritual journey involving emotional regulation, self-acceptance, and the integration of rational, emotional, and spiritual faculties. The peak of this journey is the realization of insān al-kāmil, an individual who is both psychologically and spiritually mature. This article contributes to formulating a holistic mental health model grounded in Sufism, which can serve as a reference for developing transpersonal and Islamic psychotherapeutic approaches.

Abstract

The increasing prevalence of mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, chronic stress, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) demands healing approaches that are not only clinically effective but also provide deeper spiritual meaning. Modern psychological interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness-based therapy, and gratitude interventions, have shown significant impact on improving mental health. However, these approaches are often considered limited due to their secular orientation and insufficient engagement with the transcendental dimension of human experience. This study aims to comparatively analyze the concept of gratitude as developed by Robert A. Emmons and the concept of syukur according to Syekh Ihsan Jampes, as well as to evaluate their potential integration within a holistic framework for mental disorder treatment. This research employs a qualitative approach through a literature study, drawing upon Emmons’ work (Thanks! How the New Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier), Ihsan Jampes’ Sirāj al-Ṭālibīn, the Qur’an, Hadith, literature on positive psychology, and recent empirical studies. Content analysis and comparative methods were applied to examine the definitions, dimensions, similarities, and differences of the two concepts. The findings indicate that, first, gratitude and syukur both function as healing mechanisms by reducing stress, depression, and anxiety. Second, both enhance subjective well-being, sleep quality, prosocial behavior, and emotional resilience. Third, the main difference lies in their orientation: gratitude is rooted in an empirical-secular approach, while shukr is grounded in a theological-transcendental perspective. Fourth, their integration has the potential to create a comprehensive psycho-spiritual therapy that is clinically effective while also strengthening faith, morality, and meaning in contemporary life.
