Abstract

Oral health is a crucial aspect of supporting daily activities and general well-being. Rising public awareness regarding health has driven an increased demand for quality healthcare services. Dental clinics, as healthcare providers, are required to deliver high-quality services to meet patient expectations and foster the intention to return. This study aimed to empirically analyze how service quality dimensions—namely Reliability, Responsiveness, Assurance, Empathy, and Tangibles, based on the Service Quality (SERVQUAL) model—contribute to patients' intention to return. An analytical survey with a cross-sectional design was employed, involving 20 patients who met the criterion of having visited the clinic at least three times. The results indicated that overall service quality was rated as excellent by the majority of respondents (90%). Further statistical analysis confirmed that all five service quality dimensions significantly influenced patients' intention to return (p-value <0.05 for all dimensions), with empathy identified as the most dominant factor. There was a significant influence of oral healthcare quality on patients' intention to return, mediated by patient satisfaction levels at the IDC Dental Care Clinic in Makassar. All service quality dimensions (reliability, responsiveness, assurance, empathy, and tangibles) contributed positively to the intention to return, with empathy being the most dominant factor.

Abstract

Oral health in elementary school children requires serious attention because improper brushing habits can cause plaque buildup and increase the risk of dental caries. One effort that can be done is through dental health education using interesting media, such as animated videos, because they are easier to understand and can increase children's interest in learning. This media is also considered effective in conveying information visually and audibly so that children can more easily remember the correct steps for brushing their teeth. This research seeks to ascertain the effectiveness of education using animated videos on how to brush teeth on plaque index scores in students at Darul Hikmah Islamic Elementary School in Makassar City. This research employed a one-group pretest-posttest methodology in a quasi-experimental design. The research sample consisted of 45 students in grades I, II, and III. Plaque scores were measured before and after education using the Patient Hygiene Performance (PHP) method and plaque colour identification with Tri Plaque ID Gel. The findings demonstrated that the average plaque index score before education was 4.42±0.61 and decreased to 2.52±0.46 after education, with a difference decrease  of 1.90. Based on the Tri Plaque ID Gel examination, before the education, blue plaque was found in 22 students, purple in 19 students, and pink in 4 students. After the education, there was a decrease in blue plaque in 12 students and purple to 16 students and an increase in pink plaque in 17 students. The results of the paired sample t-test showed a p value = 0.000, so there was a significant difference. The animated video education was proven to be effective in reducing plaque.

Abstract

Oral health is a condition where teeth are free from plaque and food debris. Debris is a soft deposit consisting of food debris that sticks to the teeth. Pineapples have a high water and fiber content, which can clean some of the food debris that sticks to the dentin. This study was conducted using a quasi-experimental method with a pretest-posttest group design. The number of samples used was 47 people using the Slovin formula calculation based on the inclusion criteria. The data obtained were tabulated and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Test. The results of this study showed that the average before chewing pineapple was 1.4 and after chewing pineapple was 0.7, so the difference in the reduction obtained was 0.7. Based on the analysis using the Wilcoxon test, the p value was obtained = 0.000 (> 0.05). This means that chewing pineapple has an effect on reducing debris.

Abstract

Oral and dental health is an important component of children's overall health that supports quality of life and learning processes at school. A low level of knowledge regarding dental health may increase the risk of various oral and dental health problems. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of dental health education using the group discussion method on the knowledge level of students at SD Inpres Mallengkeri 2 Makassar. This study employed a quantitative method with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design experimental approach. The sample consisted of 53 sixth-grade students selected using the total sampling technique. Data were collected using a questionnaire consisting of 15 multiple-choice questions on oral and dental health administered before (pretest) and after (posttest) the dental health education intervention through the group discussion method. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks test. The results showed that before the intervention, most respondents had poor knowledge (52.8%), moderate knowledge (37.7%), and good knowledge (9.4%). After the intervention, most respondents were in the good knowledge category (94.3%) and moderate category (5.7%), with no respondents remaining in the poor category. The mean knowledge score increased from 57.42 ± 13.71 to 92.74 ± 9.28, representing a 61.51% improvement. The Wilcoxon Signed-Ranks test showed a p-value < 0.001, indicating a statistically significant difference between knowledge levels before and after the intervention. It was concluded that dental health education using the group discussion method was effective in improving the knowledge level of students at SD Inpres Mallengkeri 2 Makassar.

Abstract

Dental and oral health problems are one of the main issues in global public health, especially among children who are in the developmental stage. One of the educational approaches that is considered effective, interesting, and easy for students to understand is the use of innovative video media. The purpose of this research is to increase children's knowledge about dental and oral health. This study adopts a pretest-posttest group design. All class IV students totaling 30 people were used as samples in this study through the application of total sampling techniques. The Paired Statistical Test is a statistical analysis technique used to assess the difference in the average student knowledge score between before (pretest) and after (posttest) (innovative video playback). The results of the Wilcoxon test showed a value of p = 0.001 (p < 0.05), which means that there was a significant difference between the students' level of knowledge before and after being given an innovative video. Based on the results of research on the effectiveness of innovative videos in increasing knowledge about dental and oral health of fourth grade children of SDN 4 Belawae, it can be concluded that innovative videos have proven to be effective as an educational medium because they are able to attract attention, make it easier for students to understand, and convey information in an attractive and interactive visual way. Abstract

Oral and dental health among deaf children deserves particular attention, since their communication limitations often make it difficult for them to grasp proper oral hygiene practices. A pop-up book is one educational medium suitable for this purpose, given its visual, attractive, and easy-to-understand nature. This study examined the extent to which preventive and promotive activities using pop-up media could improve oral and dental health behavior among deaf children at SLB Negeri 1 Makassar. A quasi-experimental design with a one-group pre-test post-test approach was applied. Forty deaf students were involved as the sample through a total sampling technique. Data were gathered using questionnaires, observation, and oral hygiene index examinations (OHI-S). Since the data were not normally distributed, the Wilcoxon test was used for analysis. Findings revealed improvement across all measured aspects following the intervention. The proportion in the good category rose from 15% to 72.5% for knowledge, from 22.5% to 72.5% for attitude, from 17.5% to 87.5% for action, and from 22.5% to 82.5% for OHI-S status. The Wilcoxon test produced a significance value of p=0.000 (<0.05) across all variables, indicating a genuine improvement in oral and dental health behavior following pop-up-based education. It can therefore be concluded that pop-up media serves as an effective preventive and promotive tool for enhancing oral and dental health behavior among deaf children.
