requiring promotional efforts through effective educational media. To improve children's understanding, effective, engaging learning media are needed, and they are appropriate to their cognitive characteristics. One such medium is audiovisual materials and flipcharts. This study aims to determine the effectiveness of audio-visual media and flipcharts in improving oral and dental health knowledge in elementary school students. The type of research used is quantitative with a Two Group Pretest-Posttest Design experiment on 88 respondents of fifth-grade students of Perumnas Elementary School, Makassar City, who were divided into two treatment groups of 44 students each. The research instrument was a questionnaire on oral and dental health knowledge given before and after counseling. The results showed a significant increase in knowledge in both groups with the Wilcoxon test (p = 0.000 <0.05). The average knowledge of students who were given counseling through audio-visual media increased from 56.93 to 81.02 with a difference of 29.09, while the flipchart group increased from 47.61 to 76.25 with a difference of 28.67. The conclusion of this study is that both media are proven to be effective in increasing knowledge of dental and oral health of elementary school students, but audio-visual media is more effective than flipcharts because it is able to attract students' attention through a combination of sound and moving images that make it easier to understand the information.  Keywords: Audiovisual; flipchart; knowledge; dental health; elementary school children

Abstract

Dental caries is a common oral health problem among elementary school children and is largely influenced by low levels of knowledge and improper tooth-brushing practices. This study aims to develop a digital picture storybook as an educational medium and to assess its feasibility and effectiveness in improving children’s knowledge of proper tooth-brushing techniques. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach using the ADDIE model, which includes the stages of analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation. Product validation was conducted by material and media experts. Field testing was carried out with 30 students from grades III and IV at UPT SPF SDN Tamamaung, Makassar. Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and paired t-test. Material expert validation yielded a feasibility score of 75.56% (feasible), while media expert validation resulted in a score of 83.75% (highly feasible). Students’ responses regarding the media’s appearance and attractiveness showed a score of 95.3% (highly feasible). Pre-test and post-test data were normally distributed (p>0.05). The paired t-test results indicated a significant increase in knowledge following the educational intervention using the digital media (p<0.001). These findings indicate that the developed digital picture storybook is not only feasible but also effective in improving elementary school students’ knowledge of proper tooth-brushing techniques.

Abstract

Dental caries is the most common oral health problem in children and can impact quality of life, especially in eating, speaking, learning, and sleeping activities. The prevalence of childhood caries in Indonesia is still high and requires special attention. This study aims to determine the relationship between the severity of dental caries and the quality of life of children at SDN 5 Benteng, Sidenreng Rappang Regency. This type of study is an observational analytic with a cross-sectional design using a total sampling technique of 70 children in grades 3–5 from a total of 156 students. Caries severity was assessed using the DMFT/deft index according to WHO criteria, while quality of life was measured with a questionnaire covering aspects of eating, speaking, learning, and sleeping disorders. Data analysis was performed univariately, bivariate using the Spearman correlation test, and multivariate with logistic regression. The results showed that most children experienced very high caries severity (41.4%) with the dominant quality of life disturbance in the eating aspect (58.6%). Bivariate testing showed a significant association between caries severity and eating disorders (p=0.013; OR=2.15), but no significant association with speech (p=0.339), learning (p=0.309), or sleep (p=0.379) disorders. The conclusion of this study is that the severity of dental caries is significantly associated with children's quality of life, particularly in terms of eating disorders. However, there was no significant association between speech, learning, and sleep. Efforts to prevent dental caries through education, regular checkups, and promotional programs in schools need to be increased to support children's dental health and quality of life. Abstract

Vital pulp therapy is a conservative dental treatment aimed at maintaining the vitality of the tooth by stimulating pulp tissue healing, promoting dentinal bridge formation, and preventing pulp necrosis. Pulp capping is one of the vital pulp therapy procedures that can be performed on permanent teeth. The success of pulp capping treatment depends on proper caries excavation and the selection of an optimal capping material. Biofactor MTA (Imicryl) is a next-generation calcium silicate–based bioactive pulp capping material developed to overcome the limitations of conventional pulp capping agents. This case report discusses the treatment of a permanent tooth diagnosed with reversible pulpitis on tooth #47, with a treatment plan of pulp capping using Biofactor MTA (Imicryl). The treatment procedure included caries excavation, application of the Biofactor MTA (Imicryl) material, placement of a glass ionomer base, and Class I composite resin restoration. Evaluation at the sixth week showed the absence of pain symptoms, good pulp vitality, and the formation of reparative dentin. Biofactor MTA demonstrated favorable clinical outcomes and shows potential as an effective, easily applicable, and more economical bioactive pulp capping material among its class for the treatment of vital permanent teeth.  Keywords : Biofactor MTA; pulp capping; bioactive; vital pulp therapy
