Abstract

The paper traces the historical development of "linguistic purism" worldwide as well as in Bangladesh. It also denotes the origin and development of the Bengali language in terms of pidginization and creolization. Furthermore, initiatives of linguistic purism in Bangladesh by linguistic purists and the government are explored from historical and socio-linguistic points of view. The myth and reality of linguistic purism in Bangladesh are explored with due reference. The issues (language pollution, language deteoration, language oppression, language extinction, language health, etc.) which are raised by language purists in Bangladesh are critically analyzed in this paper. The debate over "loan words" and "borrowing words," code-mixing, and code-switching is explained in the context of Bangladesh. The paper investigates the pros and cons of linguistic purism and its consequences for linguistic development in Bangladesh. How linguistic purism is related to linguistic human rights is vividly illustrated herewith.

Abstract

The ability of most senior high school students in Speaking English is still average and even tends to be low.Many students anxious to speak English. They think that English is difficult. Apart of theirintelligence, the environment is also very influential in the development of students' speaking abilities. In order to overcome this problem, the utilization of vlogging could be useful to help the students to improve students’ speaking anxiety, especially in explanation text which has medium difficulty. The purpose of this study is to improve the students speakinganxiety. This study was involved 31 eleventh grade students of MA Raudlatul Ulum. This study was a classroom action research which is consisted of 1 cycles. Each cycle of this study involved of 2 meetings. During each cycle, the students have some stages to make their speaking improved. The result showed that the improvement of preliminary test to cycle test 1 was 25.9%improvement or 51,6% of total students of the students who do not already passed the criteria of success. This result proved that 1 cycle of the utilization vlogging still not yet to improve students’ anxiety in speaking explanation text.However, the next cycle cannot be done because of the corona virus

Abstract

Writing is an essential element for the students in the modern era. Through writing, students can express and share their ideas, thoughts, experiences, and knowledge with others through a written form. However, teaching writing may be a challenge for the teachers, since writing is treated as a difficult skill in English learning. One of mediums that can be used in teaching writing using fiction movies. Fiction movies is a work of visual art used to simulate experiences that communicate ideas and stories. This study aims to describe the implementation and students' responses to the use of fiction movies in teaching writing. The research design of this research is qualitative which focuses on case study research. This research involved basic class students in the Excellent course Bangkalan as research subjects. Data were obtained through observation during the teaching and learning process and interviews with students. In this study, the researcher took several steps to analyze the data, namely organizing and familiarizing, coding and reducing, interpreting and representing. The findings of the first study revealed that Fiction movies were used by teachers and students both inside and outside the classroom. The teacher uses this media to facilitate writing techniques with 3 action resistance. The second finding revealed that students gave positive responses to the use of fiction movies in writing. The students said that Fiction movies is a media that is user-friendly, effective, and interesting and makes it easier to write structured. In addition, it also develops students' writing skills, and is able to motivate students in writing.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the feasibility of implementing flascards in teaching riting skills. The qualitative descriptive was used in this study by using content analysis. The technique of obtaining data used documentation. The data were analyzed by coding, displaying, and making verification. The data analysis was carried out in depth by using some theories related to the flashcards in teaching writing skills. The results of the study indicate the interrelation of the implementation and responses of the students in using flashcards. The flashcards is very helpful for students in learning to writing English because it is based on the examples given and they have learnt identifying patterns in writing skill. By seeing some journals stated that using Flashcard can improve writing skills and knowledge of vocabularies. Furthermore, it is suggested that flashcards can be effectively used in writing class.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the implementation and the students’ responses toward the use of questioning strategy in teaching speaking. The research design of the study was qualitative which focus on case study research. It involved the eleventh-grade students of MA An-Nidomiyah as the subject of the research. The data were obtained through the observation during the teaching and learning process and an interview with the students. In this study, the researcher accomplished several steps to analyze the data, namely organizing and familiarizing, coding and reducing, interpreting, and representing. The result of the research finding proves that it is effective to use this strategy. So, using a questioning strategy can improve speaking skills and knowledge of vocabularies. Furthermore, it is suggested that questioning strategy can be effectively used in speaking class.

Abstract

Enriching vocabulary looks easy, but it is possible that students encounter difficulties in enriching vocabulary. The purpose of this study is to find out the difficulties faced by students in enriching vocabulary, and also to investigate what strategy can be applied to overcome those difficulties. Researcher used qualitative-descriptive method as method in describing the data by applying three methods and the instruments. They are observation, interview, and documentation. The result of study showed students complained about pronunciation, unfamiliar words, and memorize as their difficulties in enriching vocabulary. While techniques to overcome that difficulties, they are word list and song that is applied by students and modification of memorize that is applied by teacher. Students are expected to manage the way of learning, and also what will they do to avoid the possibility of difficulties they can face.

Abstract

The top investments for all people around the world are improving and mastering speaking skills. The researcher tried to look at the implementation of TED Talks Video based learning on students’ speaking skill. In addition, this research is expected to be given as a reference, source of knowledge, theory for future and motivate readers to use TED Talks video implementation in teaching and learning. In this research, the researcher used a qualitative method with a case study approach. The researcher wanted to explain about how are the implementation of TED Talks video based learning on students’ speaking skill and the students’ responses through the teaching and learning. The result showed that the students are interested because they can learn English with full of fun in speaking skill as well to increase their speaking skill itself, pronunciation, accent and all knowledge about speaking. Besides, they also feel motivated to join the teaching and learning using TED Talks video because there are lots of advantages, such as can learn about the body gesture while speaking and get lots of motivation and information from the TED Talks video. Finally, the students feel enjoy to retell or practice in speaking class.

Abstract

Study writing become a challenge one, because their need as student strive to be produce a good paragraph but the reality sometimes they make an error in their paragraph. One of the error is fragment. Fragment is incomplete sentence. This research is aimed to identify some fragment in student’s writing paragraph and what is source of the error that occurred in students’ writing. It is descriptive qualitative. The participant data in this research is taken from 25 students. The researcher used class X A in senior high school Wachid Hasyim year 2021/2022 as sample. The result of this study showed the most common fragment found in their subject and complete verb are omitted is the highest , the second position is a dependent clause fragment is the second, the third rank is the verb is omitted and the last position is the subject is omitted with. Moreover the questionnaire showed that the incomplete knowledge of English is the source of student’s errors.

Abstract

Reading’s ability as a method of learning English is one of the most effective ways to improve vocabulary. According to Samra that Students’ reading ability is also often an important point when learning English. The laziness to read students mostly arises from each individual. So that the level of understanding of students will decrease. Besides the importance of the existence of facilities such as computers, laptops, cellphones, and internet support using reverse class learning. Reverse learning classes give students the opportunity to be able to study material by looking for reading texts on the internet as a provision for prior knowledge class session learning. The teacher must understand every development of the technological age as it is today. This study aims to describe the implementation and the students’ responses toward etymology method in teaching reading. The research design of the study was qualitative which focus on case study research. It involved the Eleventh Grade ofStudents at MA An-Nidomiyah as the subject of the research. The data were obtained through the observation during the teaching and learning process and an interview with the students. In this study, the researcher accomplished several steps to analyze the data, namely organizing and familiarizing, coding and reducing, interpreting and representing. The result of the research finding prove that it iseffective to use this method. So, using etymology method can improve reading skills and knowledge of vocabularyies. Furthermore, it is suggested that etymology methodcan be effectively used in reading class.

Abstract

This study aims to know the implementation of cognitive summarizing strategies in teaching learning listening class, the researcher was chosen cognitive summarizing as strategy to deliver the material to the students. This study was descriptive qualitative research and conducted on June 17th – 18th, 2020. The participants of this research were the English teacher and the students of XI MIPA 2 at SMA Negeri 1 Arosbaya. The data were obtained by observing the students, the teacher, and the implementation of cognitive summarizing strategies listening class by making a transcript and screenshot of the result. The result of the observation indicates that the implementation of cognitive summarizing strategies in listening class makes the students more enthusiastic about the material and they can deliver what they have been heard from the podcasts or audio using their own words.
