Abstract

This study aims to evaluate the assessment system in the Arabic textbook for 7th-grade MTs, Semester 2, published by the Ministry of Religious Affairs, based on the principles of evaluation according to H. Douglas Brown. The evaluation principles used include practicality, reliability, validity, authenticity, and washback. This study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive research design through library research. The primary data source in this study is the Arabic textbook for Grade 7 MTs, Semester 2, while secondary data was obtained from various relevant literature. Data collection was conducted through documentary analysis, while data analysis utilized content analysis. The results indicate that the evaluation system in the textbook is quite good and systematic.Assessments are presented in both formative and summative formats and include a variety of question types, such as multiple-choice, short-answer, matching, translation, sentence construction, true-false, and fill-in-the-blank. The assessment also covers the four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Based on Brown’s principles, the assessment in this textbook meets the criteria of practicality, validity, and authenticity. The reliability aspect shows good potential but remains dependent on the teacher’s consistency in administration and scoring. Meanwhile, the washback aspect has the potential to positively impact learning, although this still requires validation through field research. Thus, the Arabic textbook for Grade 7 MTs, Semester 2, is suitable for use as teaching material and a learning assessment tool; however, it still requires refinement in the scoring guidelines, teaching methods, and the strengthening of communicative exercises.

Abstract

. A fundamental area of linguistics that investigates the various ways meanings arise and operate is semantics, which is commonly described as the study of meaning in language. This study focuses on song lyrics, which use subtle expression to effectively communicate feelings, narratives, and concepts. In particular, it examines the lyrics of "The Man Who Can't Be Moved" by The Script, a moving song about unwavering love and perseverance, for both denotative (literal, dictionary-based) and connotative (implied, associative) meanings. The study uses a qualitative descriptive methodology based on Geoffrey Leech's groundbreaking semantics theory, which identifies seven meaning categories, including conceptual, connotative, and affective. This approach uses in-depth textual analysis to identify common linguistic devices found in the songs, such as inference and metaphor. Results show that denotative meanings (two occurrences) are less common than connotative meanings (three instances). The song's use of metaphorical language—such as symbolic waiting on a street corner—instead of direct narration to elicit emotional depth is reflected in connotative dominance, despite the narrow margin. This demonstrates how lyrics emphasize interpretive, evocative layers in order to connect with listeners.

Abstract

This study investigates the denotative and connotative meanings embedded in the lyrics of "Someone Like You" by Adele, a globally acclaimed pop ballad released in 2011. Drawing upon Leech's (1981) semantic framework and Ullmann's (1962) theory of meaning, this qualitative research employs a descriptive-analytical approach to examine the lyrical content. The data were collected through purposive sampling of the song's complete lyrics, and were analyzed using content analysis methods. The findings reveal that the lyrics contain rich layers of both denotative meanings—referring to literal, dictionary definitions—and connotative meanings, which evoke emotional, cultural, and associative significance beyond the literal sense. Key themes identified include grief, longing, acceptance, and unresolved romantic attachment. The study demonstrates that Adele's strategic use of language creates a multidimensional semantic landscape that resonates universally with listeners' emotional experiences. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on semantic analysis in popular music and offers pedagogical implications for English language teaching through song lyrics.
