Abstract

This study examines figurative meaning in the lyrics of Photograph by Ed Sheeran through a semantic and textual analysis approach. The research employed a non-empirical qualitative design grounded in library-based interpretation using the official song lyrics as the primary data source. The analysis focused on metaphorical, symbolic, hyperbolic, and contextual expressions interpreted through semantic theories proposed by Leech and Lyons. The findings indicate that figurative language in the song functions as an integrated semantic system for representing emotional memory, intimacy, longing, and relational permanence. Denotative and connotative meanings interact dynamically to construct emotional depth while maintaining lexical accessibility. Contextual semantics also strengthens interpretation because emotional meaning emerges through thematic continuity, situational imagination, and symbolic association rather than isolated lexical forms. Expressions related to photographs, frozen time, and emotional return create psychologically resonant imagery that intensifies listener engagement. The study confirms that contemporary song lyrics operate as literary discourse capable of encoding complex emotional experiences through semantically layered yet linguistically simple expressions.

Abstract

This study investigates the denotative and connotative meanings in the lyrics of Katy Perry’s Firework to reveal how language constructs motivational and symbolic messages. Using a descriptive qualitative method, selected lexical items, phrases, and clauses were analyzed to identify literal meanings and their associative expansions. The results show a semantic trajectory from vulnerability, fragility, and emotional pressure toward self-empowerment, inner potential, and confident self-expression. Words such as plastic bag, paper thin, and house of cards denote fragility but symbolize emotional weakness, while spark, ignite, shine, and firework convey empowerment and individuality. These findings highlight the role of lyrics as a meaningful medium for emotional engagement and personal reflection, emphasizing the significance of semantic analysis in understanding how language shapes listeners’ psychological and symbolic experiences.

Abstract

This study analyzes the denotative and connotative meanings found in the song lyric “You’ll Be in My Heart” by Phil Collins, featured in the Disney movie Tarzan. Using a qualitative descriptive method with a semantic approach based on the theory of Geoffrey Leech, the data were collected through documentation of words, phrases, and sentences in the lyric. The findings show 20 selected data, with 14 indicating denotative meaning and 19 indicating connotative meaning, revealing that many expressions contain both simultaneously. Literal expressions such as “take my hand” and “stop your crying” represent observable actions, while symbolic expressions such as “you’ll be in my heart” and “bond between us” convey emotional attachment, protection, and unconditional love. The study concludes that song lyrics function as literary texts rich in semantic layers, where simple language conveys deep emotional and social messages through the interaction of denotative and connotative meanings.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the denotative and connotative meanings found in the song lyrics of Mirrors by Justin Timberlake. The study applied a descriptive qualitative research design because the data were analyzed in the form of words, phrases, clauses, and sentences taken from the song lyrics. The data source of this study was the official lyrics of Mirrors, released in 2013. The researcher used documentation as the technique of data collection and semantic analysis as the technique of data analysis. The findings showed that both denotative and connotative meanings were found in the lyrics. The researcher identified a total of 55 data, consisting of 22 denotative meanings and 33 connotative meanings. Denotative meanings appeared in words with literal meanings such as mirror, eyes, light, and heart. Meanwhile, connotative meanings were more dominant and appeared in symbolic expressions such as you are my mirror, my other half, and you make me complete, which represent love, identity, unity, and emotional connection. The findings indicate that connotative meaning is more dominant than denotative meaning in the song because the songwriter employs figurative and symbolic language to convey deeper emotional messages. Therefore, song lyrics can be considered an important object of semantic study because they contain rich linguistic meanings and artistic expressions.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the denotative and connotative meanings in the song lyrics “Anti-Hero” by Taylor Swift. The research applies a qualitative descriptive method, focusing on semantic analysis to interpret the meanings conveyed in the lyrics. The data are collected from the official song lyrics and analyzed based on the theory of meaning proposed by Geoffrey Leech, particularly the distinction between denotative (literal) and connotative (associative) meanings. The findings reveal that the denotative meanings in the song are generally straightforward and reflect the literal interpretation of the words. However, the connotative meanings expose deeper emotional and psychological themes, including self-criticism, insecurity, anxiety, and inner conflict. The lyrics demonstrate how simple expressions can carry complex implied meanings through figurative language and personal reflection. In conclusion, the study shows that connotative meaning plays a dominant role in conveying the overall message of the song. The use of semantic analysis helps uncover the hidden meanings behind the lyrics and provides a deeper understanding of the artist’s expression. This study contributes to the field of Semantics by illustrating how meaning is constructed and interpreted in contemporary song lyrics.

Abstract

This study investigates the denotative and connotative meanings embedded in the lyrics of "Someone Like You" by Adele, a globally acclaimed pop ballad released in 2011. Drawing upon Leech's (1981) semantic framework and Ullmann's (1962) theory of meaning, this qualitative research employs a descriptive-analytical approach to examine the lyrical content. The data were collected through purposive sampling of the song's complete lyrics, and were analyzed using content analysis methods. The findings reveal that the lyrics contain rich layers of both denotative meanings—referring to literal, dictionary definitions—and connotative meanings, which evoke emotional, cultural, and associative significance beyond the literal sense. Key themes identified include grief, longing, acceptance, and unresolved romantic attachment. The study demonstrates that Adele's strategic use of language creates a multidimensional semantic landscape that resonates universally with listeners' emotional experiences. This research contributes to the growing body of literature on semantic analysis in popular music and offers pedagogical implications for English language teaching through song lyrics.

Abstract

This study investigates how context shapes the interpretation of meaning in language from a semantic perspective. While traditional semantics often focuses on the relationship between linguistic forms and their inherent meanings, this research emphasizes that meaning cannot be fully understood without considering contextual factors. The study aims to explore how different types of context—linguistic, situational, and cultural—interact to influence meaning construction and interpretation. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research analyzes selected examples from both written and spoken discourse to identify how context contributes to meaning disambiguation and pragmatic understanding. The findings demonstrate that context plays a decisive role in resolving lexical and structural ambiguity, guiding inference, and aligning interpretation with speaker intention. In particular, the study highlights that identical linguistic expressions may yield different meanings depending on contextual conditions. The study concludes that context is not a peripheral element but a central component in semantic interpretation. Incorporating contextual analysis enhances the accuracy of meaning interpretation and supports more effective communication. These findings have important implications for linguistic theory, language teaching, translation studies, and discourse analysis, where sensitivity to context is essential for achieving clarity and precision.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze political risk lexis in the BBC News article entitled “Trump's Confidence Is Undimmed – But Every Iran Option Comes with Risk.” The focus of this research is to identify the lexical items related to political risk and examine their meanings using a lexical semantic approach. This study employs a descriptive qualitative research design, as it seeks to interpret the meanings of words within their context rather than to quantify data. The data are taken from a BBC News article and collected using a documentation technique by identifying words and phrases that represent political risk. The analysis reveals that several key lexical items, such as risk, threat, danger, uncertainty, and escalation, are used to construct the concept of political risk in the text. These lexical items are analyzed based on their denotative, connotative, and contextual meanings. The findings show that risk is the most dominant lexical item, supported by other related words that emphasize different dimensions of political instability. Furthermore, the study finds that these lexical items function not only to describe events but also to emphasize uncertainty, construct a perception of danger, and influence readers’ interpretations of the political situation. In addition, the study demonstrates that lexical choices play a crucial role in media discourse, particularly in framing political issues. The use of political risk lexis in the article contributes to constructing a narrative of instability and complexity in the United States–Iran conflict. Therefore, this study highlights the importance of lexical semantic analysis in understanding how language is used to shape meaning and influence public perception in media texts.

Abstract

Mood and modality are important aspects of semantic studies because they express attitudes, emotions, certainty, obligation, and intention through language. The aims of this research are to identify and describe the types of mood and modality found in the song "Reckless" by Madison Beer and to explain their semantic meanings. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method with semantic analysis as the main approach. The data source is the lyrics of the song "Reckless." This study analyzed clauses and modal expressions based on Halliday's theory of mood and Palmer's theory of modality. The findings show that the declarative mood is the dominant mood used in the song because the lyrics mainly express emotional experiences and reflections. In addition, three types of modality were identified, namely epistemic modality, deontic modality, and dynamic modality. Dynamic modality appears most dominantly because the song strongly expresses emotional ability, willingness, regret, and vulnerability. The use of mood and modality in the lyrics strengthens the emotional meaning of heartbreak, disappointment, betrayal, and sadness conveyed by the singer. It is expected that this research can provide a deeper understanding of how mood and modality function in expressing emotions through song lyrics and contribute as a reference for future studies in semantics, especially those analyzing mood and modality in literary works such as songs, poems, or other lyrical texts.
