Abstract

This study investigates the influence of social media on journalists' work patterns in the digital era. The rapid development of digital platforms has transformed how journalists collect, process, and disseminate information, as well as interact with their audience. Using a quantitative research design with descriptive and associative approaches, data were collected from 30 journalism students who had completed practical journalistic activities. A structured questionnaire was administered online, and data were analyzed using simple linear regression with SPSS Statistic 27. The results show that social media significantly affects journalists' work patterns, with a positive relationship indicated by a regression coefficient of 0.734 and a determination coefficient (R²) of 0.518. Findings suggest that social media enhances the speed of information acquisition, facilitates real-time news dissemination, increases interaction with audiences, and supports multitasking in digital journalism. The study concludes that social media is an integral tool that reshapes journalistic practices, demanding both technical skills and professional ethics. These insights highlight the necessity for journalists to adapt to digital transformations to maintain efficiency, credibility, and accuracy in news production.

Abstract

This study analyzes Gen Z media literacy in building trust and verifying news on social media, particularly TikTok, among students of the Communication Science Study Program at Universitas Dehasen Bengkulu. The problem addressed in this study is the high use of social media as a daily news source that is not always followed by adequate critical literacy and verification practices. This research used an exploratory qualitative approach based on W. James Potter's media literacy theory, focusing on analysis, evaluation, and synthesis. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, documentation, and literature review involving five purposively selected student informants. The findings show that students actively use TikTok to obtain news, but their understanding of news content tends to be brief and visual-oriented. Trust is often influenced by virality, number of likes, comments, and the popularity of influencers rather than source credibility. Verification is conducted only when information is considered important or doubtful. Therefore, students' media literacy is sufficient but still needs strengthening, especially in evaluation and synthesis skills.

Abstract

This study analyzes the representation of child grooming in the Indonesian film Like & Share (2022) directed by Gina S. Noer. The problem addressed in this article is how the film constructs child grooming as a gradual communicative process rather than as a sudden act of violence. The study uses a descriptive qualitative method with John Fiske's semiotic approach, consisting of the levels of reality, representation, and ideology. The data were obtained from selected film scenes, dialogue, character behavior, visual composition, lighting, editing, and supporting literature. The results show that grooming is represented through three main stages: trust building, boundary erosion and emotional dependency, and gaslighting with psychological control. At the level of reality, grooming appears through ordinary gestures, friendly speech, and a safe-looking environment. At the level of representation, warm lighting, close-up shots, soft music, and gradual editing make the relationship look intimate and romantic. At the ideological level, the film criticizes patriarchal power relations, victim blaming, weak protection systems, and the normalization of adult male dominance over teenage girls. The study concludes that Like & Share functions as a medium of social criticism and public education about hidden forms of grooming.

Abstract

This study examines the lifestyle of students receiving the Indonesia Smart Card (KIP) Scholarship for Higher Education in the Communication Science Study Program at Universitas Dehasen Bengkulu. The problem addressed is how scholarship recipients construct daily lifestyles within a campus environment that contains diverse economic backgrounds, peer interactions, digital media exposure, and social expectations. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with the Activity, Interest, and Opinion (AIO) lifestyle framework. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation involving five active KIP Kuliah recipients. The findings show that the students generally practice simple, productive, and adaptive lifestyles. In the activity dimension, students prioritize lectures, assignments, organizations, part-time work, and the use of smartphones for academic and communication purposes. In the interest dimension, they show strong interest in education, technology, social media, sports, organizations, and self-development. In the opinion dimension, they view education as the main priority and see KIP Kuliah as an opportunity to improve future living standards. Although some tendencies toward leisure activities, culinary consumption, and premium smartphone use appear, the dominant pattern remains responsible and selective. The study concludes that KIP Kuliah recipients negotiate lifestyle through internal factors such as motivation, self-awareness, financial control, and priority setting, as well as external factors such as family economy, peer environment, campus culture, technology, social media, and academic demands.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of Instagram as a medium for shaping the image of the MSME @Mp_Jawelry in Rama Agung Village, North Bengkulu Regency. The research used a descriptive qualitative method. The main theoretical framework was Luttrell's Circular Model of Social Media, consisting of share, optimize, manage, and engage, supported by Frank Jefkins' image theory. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation involving the owner who manages the Instagram account and two consumers who purchased products online and offline. The findings show that Instagram supports image formation through product photos, reels, short videos, stories, captions, testimonials, direct messages, and audience interactions. In the share stage, Instagram introduces product information and creates initial audience awareness. In the optimize stage, visual consistency, aesthetic feeds, clear product photos, and informative captions strengthen product identity. In the manage stage, fast, friendly, and informative responses build consumer trust. In the engage stage, likes, comments, reposted stories, DMs, and testimonials create emotional closeness with consumers. Overall, Instagram functions not only as a promotional channel but also as a strategic medium for building a creative, aesthetic, modern, trustworthy, and consumer-oriented MSME image.

Abstract

Animated films are recognized as powerful media for conveying moral values, yet the ways these values are embedded in visual and verbal signs remain underexplored. This study analyzes the film Luca (2021) by Pixar Animation Studios, which portrays themes of friendship, identity, and courage. This study aims to identify the moral values in the film based on Thomas Lickona’s (1991) character education theory and to analyze how those values are represented through signs using Roland Barthes’ semiotic theory (1972, 1977). This research employs a qualitative descriptive method. The data consist of selected scenes and dialogues analyzed through Barthes’ two levels of signification: denotation and connotation. The findings reveal seven moral values: honesty, empathy and kindness, moral courage, self-control, respect, responsibility, and cooperation. These values are conveyed through signs that operate literally at the denotative level and carry deeper emotional, cultural, and social meanings at the connotative level. This study concludes that Luca (2021) functions as a meaningful medium for moral education and character building, with direct implications for the use of animated film in character education.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the verbal and non-verbal communication signs represented through the character of Elodie in Damsel (2024) and interpret their meanings and communication functions in relation to her character transformation. This study employed a qualitative descriptive method using Charles Sanders Peirce’s semiotic theory and Mulyana’s (2019) communication function theory. The data were collected through repeated observation of the movie and identification of scenes containing Elodie’s communication signs. The findings reveal 36 data, consisting of 15 verbal and 21 non-verbal communication signs. Verbal communication is predominantly represented through oral communication, including dialogues, emotional expressions, warnings, clarifications, persuasive messages, and confrontational statements, while non-verbal communication is represented through kinesics and eye movements, with kinesics appearing in all non-verbal data. The findings indicate that expressive communication is the dominant communication function in both verbal and non-verbal data, followed by persuasive, informative, and social communication. From Peirce’s semiotic perspective, the communication signs function as representamina that construct meanings related to vulnerability, self-reliance, courage, compassion, and moral maturity. Overall, the findings demonstrate that verbal and non-verbal communication work together to portray Elodie as a resilient character whose transformation progresses from vulnerability and dependence to self-reliance and moral maturity

Abstract

Enggano and Mentawai are languages of the barrier islands off the western coast of Sumatra, yet the extent of their phonological relationship remains insufficiently defined. This study examines their phonological relationship and associated cultural correspondence, with particular attention to nasal sounds. A qualitative descriptive design was combined with an ethnolinguistic field approach. The linguistic data consist of a 200-item Swadesh list in Enggano and Mentawai and ten supplementary items selected to examine nasal realizations. Recordings and lexical data were organized through ELAN and FLEx, while representative sound segments were inspected with Praat and the lexical relationship was calculated lexicostatistically. The analysis identifies 36 cognate items from the 200-word comparison, producing a cognate percentage of 18%, which places the relationship in the stock/group range used in the study. Nasal realizations also show systematic differences, with Enggano displaying stronger nasal correspondence with adjacent vowels than Mentawai. Culturally, both communities retain ancestral-spirit traditions and subsistence practices, although their kinship systems differ. The findings indicate relatedness without dialectal identity and underline the distinctiveness of Enggano within the western Sumatran barrier-island linguistic setting.
