Abstract

This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of authentic texts versus fabricated texts in improving reading comprehension among high school students learning English as a Foreign Language (EFL). Using a quasi-experimental design, the study involved two groups of students: an experimental group that was taught using authentic materials (e.g., news articles, short stories) and a control group that used fabricated texts specifically designed for educational purposes. Data were collected through pre-tests and post-tests on reading comprehension, a motivation questionnaire, and classroom observations. The results showed a significant improvement in reading comprehension scores and learning motivation in the experimental group compared to the control group. Authentic texts were found to be more engaging and relevant, boosting students' intrinsic motivation and active participation. The study concludes that integrating authentic materials into the EFL classroom can enhance reading skills and increase student engagement. Both authentic and fabricated texts play important roles in language learning, and their balanced use can provide a comprehensive approach to teaching reading comprehension.

Abstract

This study investigates the repair organizations in English classrooms within a single-sex class. The bilingual school operates in an Islamic boarding environment, separating students by gender. A qualitative approach was employed, collecting data through classroom observations and video recordings across three sessions each in male-only and female-only classes. Analyzing the interactions through Paul Ten Have's interactional organization framework, especially the repair organization paradigm. Distinct patterns emerged, such as the teacher's dominant role in initiating repairs in both classes, although interaction fluidity and response styles varied due to differences in gender dynamics and teaching styles. This study highlights the nuanced influence of gender and cultural context on interaction patterns, specifically in repair organization within classroom discourse. Repair organization in female-only and male-only classes revealed distinct patterns over three meetings, influenced by interactional dynamics and gender-based classroom environments. In the female-only class, self-initiated self-repair initially increased, peaking at 50% in the second meeting before decreasing to 9% by the third. This decline was accompanied by a rise in other-initiated self-repair, indicating a shift toward more collaborative repair strategies. Conversely, the male-only class emphasized self-initiated self-repair at first, which declined as self-initiated other repair rose to 67% in the second meeting, reflecting a gradual move toward collaboration. By the final meeting, other-initiated self-repair dominated at 60%, showing a balance between self-reliance and peer support among male students. It can be summarized that there is a significance flow of repair organization both in female-only class students and male-only class students.

Correlation findings reveal distinct relationships, while regression and structural equation modeling highlight the explanatory power of selected predictors. The findings of this research have practical implications for lecturers, administrators, and policymakers in higher education. Additionally, this research contributes to the scholarly discourse by capturing diverse narratives surrounding the integration of DL in HE. This increased understanding of research opens up opportunities for future research in the form of further investigation into the specific dynamics of peer influence and the impact of institutional policies. In conclusion, higher education institutions adapt to the digital era's demands, and collective research and practice efforts can form an inclusive and adaptive education system.

Abstract

This study examines teachers' experiences in utilizing Information and Communication Technology (ICT) tools for English language teaching at the senior high school level. In the digital era, ICT integration has become essential to enhance teaching effectiveness, foster student engagement, and support autonomous learning. Through a qualitative approach, interviews were conducted with two English teachers from SMA Negeri 2 Tanjungpinang to explore the benefits and challenges of ICT implementation. The findings highlight that ICT tools, including PowerPoint, Learning Management Systems (LMS), and collaborative platforms, significantly improve the teaching-learning process. These tools facilitate engaging multimedia-based instruction, effective assessment methods, and interactive learning environments. Applications like Elsa Speak also enhance students' speaking and pronunciation skills. Despite these advantages, several challenges were identified, such as limited technological infrastructure, insufficient teacher training, and inflexible features of certain platforms. For example, some quiz systems do not accept alternative answers, leading to inefficiencies. This study emphasizes the need for infrastructure improvements, continuous professional development for teachers, and the development of more adaptive ICT tools. These efforts are crucial to overcoming existing barriers and optimizing ICT integration in education. The findings provide valuable insights for policymakers, curriculum developers, and educators to enhance the quality of English language teaching and ensure equitable access to technology in learning.
