Abstract

Abstract Axiology of education examines the values underlying the goals, processes, and outcomes of education. From an Islamic perspective, education is rooted in spiritual, ethical, and moral values derived from the Quran and Hadith, aiming to shape individuals who are devout, morally upright, and capable of fulfilling their roles as stewards (khalifah) on Earth. Conversely, the Western perspective emphasizes pragmatic and secular values, focusing on logic, rationality, and individual achievements in economic, technological, and social aspects. This study employs a qualitative approach based on library research to analyze the core values and differences in educational objectives between Islamic and Western perspectives. The findings reveal that Islamic education integrates worldly and spiritual dimensions, while Western education primarily focuses on secular life. This article contributes to developing a holistic and relevant paradigm of Islamic education that addresses contemporary challenges. Keywords: Axiology, Islamic, Western

Abstract

Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) technology have brought about significant transformations in foreign language teaching (FLT). This article explores the opportunities, challenges, and implementation strategies of AI in foreign language learning, with a focus on personalization of learning, real-time feedback, and increased accessibility. AI enables adaptive learning approaches to suit individual needs, provides instant feedback that supports language skill development, and opens access to quality materials for students in different geographies. However, challenges such as traditional curriculum integration, algorithm bias, limited understanding of cultural context, and ethical issues of data privacy need to be overcome for optimal utilization of AI. Teacher involvement remains essential to provide guidance, motivation, and pedagogical adjustments in a holistic learning process.

Abstract

This review explores secondary school students' perceptions of learning speaking skills, emphasizing the importance of effective communication in both academic and real-world settings. While speaking, especially in a second language, is crucial, many students face challenges such as anxiety and lack of confidence. Understanding these perceptions is essential for educators to enhance teaching strategies and create supportive environments. The study explores factors influencing students' views, including motivation, teaching methods, and the learning environment. Motivated students tend to be more confident and engaged in speaking activities, while interactive methods, such as group activities and technology integration, improve participation. A positive and inclusive classroom atmosphere can reduce fear and promote confidence. However, challenges like fear of mistakes and limited vocabulary persist, requiring adaptive teaching techniques focused on gradual skill development and constructive feedback. The study recommends innovative approaches, such as task-based learning and gamified exercises, to make speaking practice enjoyable and effective. The findings provide valuable insights for improving English language education and suggest areas for future research, including cultural influences and technological advancements. Keywords: Student perceptions; speaking skills; secondary education; learning strategies; language proficiency; communication skills.

Abstract

The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) enhanced teaching and learning, particularly in reading, by making lessons interactive and resource-rich. While ICT integration in teaching English skills had been widely discussed, its specific impact on teaching reading remained underexplored. This study investigated the ICT tools integrated by an English teacher at SMKN 1 Tanjungpinang and the impact on teaching reading. Employing a qualitative embedded case study design, data were collected through interview, observation, and document analysis involving one teacher and 15 students from a vocational school in Tanjungpinang. The findings revealed that laptop, projector, speaker, and applications like Kahoot! and PowerPoint were commonly used ICT tools. The integration of ICT increased student engagement, focus, and reading comprehension, though challenges such as distractions from personal devices were observed. Overall, ICT integration positively influenced teaching reading by enhancing interactivity, student motivation, vocabulary acquisition, and summarizing the story, demonstrating its potential in modern education. Abstract

Effective education requires teaching methods that can accommodate the needs and potential of each student in class. In this context, student-centered learning (SCL) emerges as an approach that places students at the center of the learning process, where they actively participate in knowledge formation through various activities such as discussions, collaborations, and problem-solving. This approach aims to enhance student engagement, foster independence, and develop critical thinking and communication skills. This research aimed to assess the extent to which the implementation of student-centered learning in the classroom can increase active participation and student involvement in learning. The result of the study shows that students exhibit student-centered learning behaviors while participating in classroom activities. Students are able to engage in discussions with their peers and actively participate in every question posed by the teacher. The benefit of this study is to understand how effective student-centered learning is in English language teaching in class.

Abstract

Writing is one of the most complex and challenging language skills for students in vocational high schools, especially in writing biography texts. This study aims to analyze the writing competence of eleventh-grade students in the Industrial Automation Engineering program at SMKN 3 Tanjungpinang through their biography text products. A qualitative descriptive approach was used, and data were collected through student worksheets containing tasks to write about public figures. The data were analyzed using four writing assessment criteria: content, organization, grammar, and mechanics, based on Brown's (2007) rubric. The findings showed that most students demonstrated relatively strong performance in the aspects of content and grammar, but faced significant difficulties in organizing coherent paragraphs and applying proper punctuation and spelling. The highest score obtained was 96, while the lowest score was 55, with an overall mean score of 80.64. These results show that although students have a strong foundation in writing skills, more contextualized, systematic and feedback-based learning strategies are needed. The application of genre-based approaches, the use of authentic model texts, and continuous training in text cohesion and coherence are recommended to comprehensively improve students' writing competence in the context of vocational education.

Abstract

This study aims to reveal how slang is used as a satirical tool in delivering social criticism through Kurtis Conner's YouTube content. The focus of the study lies on ironic, hyperbolic, and parodical linguistic forms, and how these elements shape social messages in the digital space. This research uses a qualitative approach with a sociolinguistic discourse analysis method. Data were collected through direct observation and transcription of five Kurtis Conner videos containing satirical elements and the use of slang. The results show that the use of slang in the content not only reflects the communication style of young people, but also serves as a means of delivering social criticism in a subtle but effective manner. Through humor, irony, and satire, slang is able to voice dissatisfaction with conservative values, shallow popular culture, and other social biases. This study concludes that slang in digital media has an important role in shaping young people's social awareness through satirical strategies.

Abstract

This study aims to determine whether there is a correlation between the frequency of students watching vlogging and their vocabulary proficiency. As learning media continues to evolve, students are expected to adapt and utilize these media to enhance their language skills. Vocabulary is the foundation of English learning and plays a crucial role in enabling students to initiate communication and express their ideas effectively. This study employed a quantitative method with a correlational design. The population consisted of sixth-semester English Education students at UIN SATU Tulungagung, with a sample of 52 students selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire. The result showed that the value of rxy = 0.262, while the critical value at the 5% significance level is 0.273. Based on this result, the researcher concluded that there is a low correlation between the frequency of students watching vlogging and their vocabulary proficiency.
