Abstract

With a limited number of characters per tweet, writing on Twitter requires creativity. It is unique media format has not only revolutionized online communication but also created a distinct style of writing. In this case, Twitter stands as a platform that reflects the way we write and communicate in English. Researcher wants to investigate the effects of twitter on students’ English writing skill. This is a case study method. This method helps the researcher to identify the problem in detail information. The data collected from questionnaire in English writing learning process. The lecturer becomes the observer or researcher of the research. On the other hand, students become the object of the research. As the conclusion, Twitter had a significant impact on students' writing skills in English. It challenges them to express their thoughts succinctly and effectively within a limited number of characters, encouraging creativity. However, it can also lead to errors and the use of informal language. Meanwhile, Twitter provides exposure to a variety of content and interactions with people from diverse backgrounds, which improves grammatical understanding. It also helps expand vocabulary by offering different words in context.

Abstract

This study aimed to describe CLE method in enchanching students' reading achievement through review experts' opinions and results of previous research on the definition and benefits of CLE. The finding of study show that, CLE was effective media, and the media that could enchanching students' writing achievement regarding their motivation, literacy, creativity, and critical thinking.CLE also can be used in developing students creativity in reading comprehend , especially to support students reading. The students should increase their knowledge about vocabulary, grammar, and another aspects of reading. The study was conducted as library research that relies on the results of previous studies and experts' opinions for answering the present study's research questions.

Abstract

Trauma is a condition that arises as a result of a scary experience or event that happened to someone, such as natural disasters, physical violence, sexual harassment, and traffic accident. The response caused by trauma is have suicidal thought and depression, which affects a person's mentality due to the traumatic event they experienced. The purpose of this study is to know the causes and effects of trauma and how to recovery from trauma diseases. In this study, the writer used a descriptive-qualitative method. The writer watches the movie and identifies the data, then analysis all trauma in See You on Venus movie. In this study, the writer found that in the main character of See You on Venus movie, caused trauma by traffic accident and lost his close friend. Because that accident, he gets pressure and have suicidal thought to end his life. The effort of main character to get out from trauma condition is because partner sharing and travelling to new place.

Abstract

This thesis analyze the obsessive love disorder experienced by Christian Harper, the male main character in Ana Huang's novel, Twisted Lies. The objectives of this thesis are to know the symptoms of obsessive-love, the causes of the obsessive-love and the effects of obsessive-love in Ana Huang's Twisted Lies novel. The writer uses descriptive qualitative method. To analyze the novel the writer read the novel several times and uses theories from books and journal. The result of this study are the symptoms of male main character having obsessive love disorder are making Stella his idealized lover, delusional jealousy, and pursuit. The causes of male main character having obsessive love disorder is abandonment. Meanwhile, the effects of male main character having obsessive love disorder is isolation.

Abstract

Research aims were knowing about reading comprehending of reading difficulties on English text and the solutions. It was focus on five reading aspects in comprehending, they were main idea, topic sentence, vocabulary, inference, and referent. This research was a library approach with descriptive qualitative method. Research subject was relevant literatures sources and data on the same issue to reading comprehension difficulties on English text. the research show that learners have problematic in analyzing main point in every paragraph, confused in finding topic sentence, wrong words meaning matching, confused in making inference, could not finding inference in the reading text. From five aspects, the most difficult aspect was identifying main idea and vocabulary understanding because sometime it wrote implicitly. Solving this trouble, as the teachers, it was very important to teach the students using various reading strategies, and various types of reading text. for the students, they need to do more reading practice than before, as many as experiences and background knowledge in reading text, it was very useful to help them in comprehending English reading text. Students also must use reading strategy while reading the text, using dictionary or ask the teacher about unfamiliar words. Keywords: Difficulties; English Text; Reading Comprehension;.

Abstract

This is Classroom Action Research (henceforth, CAR) which was mainly carried out to prove that the implementation of Make A Match technique could enhance students’ mastery on phrasal verbs and to describe the students’ responses towards the implementation of Make A Match technique in learning processes of phrasal verbs. This CAR was carried out in two cycles in which each cycle consisted of four phases. The research subjects of this CAR are the fourth semester students of the English Language Education Study Program in the Academic Year of 2022/2023 at a private university in Medan consisting of 14 students. The analysis of quantitative data shows that the students’ total score and mean increased continually from the pre-test, formative test, and post-test. The students’ total score in the pre-test is 270 and the mean of the pre-test is 19.3; the students’ total score in the formative test is 792 and the mean of the formative test is 56.6; the students’ total score in the post-test is 1.072 and the mean of the post-test is 76.6. The analysis of qualitative data shows that the learning processes of phrasal verbs through the application of Make A Match technique ran very well. The class atmosphere was more alive and enjoyable after Make A Match technique was implemented so that the students were more active and motivated to learn and master phrasal verbs. It is advisable that English teachers or English lecturers apply Make A Match technique to teach phrasal verbs to their students.

Abstract

In the Covid-19 pandemic, the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture developed special English self-access learning modules for grade IX students. These modules are intended to facilitate the students in studying English at home by themselves. There are special features in these modules that are especially provided for the students. These special features are worth to be investigated. The aim of this research is to explain the special features provided by the writers in the self-access English learning modules. This research is a content analysis research. It is found that there are five special features in these modules. These special features include 1) detailed objectives of each unit, 2) roles of the teacher and parents table, 3) Indonesian translation for the instructions, 4) graded scaffolding activities, and 5) detailed answer keys. Hopefully, this research would give new insights upon self-access English learning materials especially for special nationwide conditions.

Abstract

Politeness and impoliteness are integral aspects of pragmatics, deeply embedded in the fabric of social interaction. This study aims to analyze the manifestations of politeness and impoliteness in the live verbal interactions featured on the YouTube channel "Mata Najwa." Specifically, the focus is on the episode titled "Prabowo Subianto Bicara Gagasan Mata Najwa." By examining the discourse in this episode, the study seeks to elucidate how conversational strategies either adhere to or deviate from societal norms of politeness. Such an analysis is pivotal for understanding the dynamics of communication and the implicit power relations within social interactions. The findings can provide valuable insights into the mechanisms of face-saving and face-threatening acts, contributing to the broader field of pragmatics and its application to real-life media interactions. This investigation underscores the relevance of politeness theory in contemporary digital communication platforms.

Abstract

The issue of gender is still debated by scientists. Some studies show that there is no difference between men and women in education. This research seeks to provide new nuances about gender issues in the TOEFL ITP test scores of prospective graduates of Unipdu in 2024. The data were obtained from 102 prospective graduates of Unipdu 2024, totaling 102 participants consisting of 52 male prospective graduates and 52 female prospective graduates who took the TOEFL ITP test. Data was obtained from the TOEFL ITP score. The statistical analysis used is using two independent sample t-tests on SPSS application. The average TOEFL score of males was higher than the average TOEFL score of females. The difference in average scores is: 389.0588 - 383.8431 = 5.2157, that is, the average TOEFL score of male prospective graduates is 5.2157 points higher than the average TOEFL score of female prospective graduates. The standard deviation of female graduate candidates is higher than the standard deviation of male graduate candidates. The difference is 26.59126 - 22.11553 = 4.47573. So it can be concluded that from the results of this study there is no significant difference between TOEFL ITP scores between males and females.

Abstract

This research intended to find out the reasons for students’ cheating, the applications used by students to cheat, and the solutions for educators to avoid students from cheating. This research used a mixed method. This research was conducted in STIKes Bina Cipta Husada Purwokerto. 16 students of Clinical and Community Pharmacy and two English lecturers were the subjects of this research. Questionnaires and interviews were conducted to collect the data. Then, the data was analyzed using data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The result obtained that there are four reasons for students’ cheating such as unconfident to do exams, lack of motivation, dislike of English, and social situational factors. Meanwhile, the applications employed by students to cheat on exams such as Gemini, DeepL, Bing, Roboguru, and Question. AI. To overcome students’ cheating problems, educators can do many things such as make anti-cheating pledges, different versions of tests, switch seating on every test day, use a questions pool, and application to detect plagiarism, and give compliments to students.
